Critical AFL opinion pieces with an unmistakable WA bias
Why Albany should become the 20th AFL football club
Take a look at our 8 minute shallow-dive into what makes Albany, the best prospect for the 20th AFL Licence, that nobody is even talking about yet.
As the AFL competition braces itself for the impending arrival of the Tasmania Devils (particularly in the upcoming drafts), the fascinating question still remains - Who will the 20th AFL team be?
While the AFL has not even confirmed that there will be one, the existence of an uneven fixture is likely to plague the home-and-away seasons until a side is either booted back down to 18, or in the far more likely scenario, a 20th AFL licence is approved after a series of bids and financial commitments by states and territories around the country.
Currently popular suggestions include: The Northern Territory, Western Australia, and South Australia, with places like Bunbury, WA and Norwood, SA already floated respectively as the landings sites in the established states.
While there are plenty of other suggestions, our video will hopefully explain why there is no better-suited location than Albany, assuming that the Northern Territory is deemed to be simply unachievable due to the climate, even if the money wasn't also a challenge.
We hope you agree, and would love to get your feedback in the comments.

มุมมอง 1.7Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Welcome to the third episode of our 3-part series on players to watch at West Coast in 2025. The series is a deep-dive into which players will help the Eagles climb the ladder in 2025 by improving on their contribution in prior years. It is a ranking of player improvement rather than who is best, in order to reflect where the West Coast Eagles can expect their improvement to come from next year...

It’s a tiny town
@jpw5029 driving around there the size is bigger than it comes across on paper, but that is definitely the hardest obstacle
1. Not enough population to justify the location 2. If we have a third team, home ground will be also Optus Stadium (no extra spending on home ground). 3. Supporters will come mainly from the metro WA
I believe it should be in Bunbury, people would come down from Busselton and Mandurah and people would come up from Albany and market river
@Gnowop3 That point about the population is a really good one. The hope would be that an AFL team would be a big part in it growing a lot faster. Love the idea of all the closer options in WA too, but if WA could pull a team in Albany off it would do a lot more for the state
I like the part about what this can do for Western Australia. Albany would love this, but WA needs this!
@@coastalsurfbreak 100% would change the state
Albany hasn’t even had a viable SBL (WA state basketball) team since the Rainbow Coast Raiders folded in 1999, and despite trying for many years haven’t had financial backing. That would scare off any potential contacts. Bunbury, Mandurah or Joondalup would certainly be a priority over Albany. Great idea though, as a west coast fan who grew up there, I’d buy a membership.
Yeah they'd need to do it properly. State of the art training facilities and a stadium to start. If it went ahead I'd see it succeeding, AFL should hopefully generate a lot more momentum. Albany is an unreal place too!
Can you guys just take St. Kilda and put them in Albany? They're an embarrassment to Victoria. Thanks
@seanprice2990 there is a very good chance that a couple of Vic clubs are sweating a possibility like this at the moment🤣
Good stuff
@@jpw5029 cheers mate
West Coast absolutely nailed the draft in every aspect.
@@FoLlOwThEwHiTeRaBbIt1 agreed!
Thanks for your perspective
@Stephen-nj8kb thank you 🫡
I think Tom Cole has fallen out of the best 22. Apart from that the final team is more or less what i would say. Concerning news about Edwards,he just seems to always get injuries.
@Elcapitaan5 yeah that's an interesting point. He's seems to fly under the radar as a best 22 player, but hasn't been his best in a long time
Subscribed, I watch a lot of WCE content man, nice work looking forward to more content that isn’t just stating the obvious
@JonGarrood thanks mate, much appreciated 🫡
Hamish is afl ready
@r1ftz793 apparently a really big slider to pick up where West Coast got him! This draft might get a lot of credit looking back
Great content mate, really enjoyed the 3 parts. Especially like the Graham / Redden comparison, I hadn't thought of that but seems obvious now you say it! Big concerns about Edwards, I really like him but stress fractures are worrying. I think that area will be our biggest weakness this season so hopefully the new players plug the other gaps.
@travisfarley yeah the Edwards thing just never seems to turn a corner unfortunately. Ideally I'd be completely wrong, and he gets out of the moonboot in Jan without another issue🤞
You missed the best recruit of the bunch, Malakai champion, I think he will be an all star if he manages to avoid concussions
@jogon9649 love that call. Also very convenient to see him slip past the draft entirely. I have a feeling that's just because clubs knew they couldn't have him so didn't bother. He's definitely on the longterm list!
Fantastic series mate. I feel it's another year of discovery for this squid. We seriously need to bolster our wafl side too.
@JJJose-uj5ui thanks mate, part 3 was a personal favourite. Agreed, at this stage it looks like all 3 well-paid spots in the WAFL side are vacant
subscribed, looking forward to mid season content
@jogon9649 looking forward to that too!
Keep pumping the content out mate! Im loving the content!!
@@zooman_AFL8984 thanks mate!
2025s going to be an exciting year. Go Eagles!
@GBV1436 absolutely so much to be excited for!
Barnett shouldn't be anywhere near this list lol. He is miles away from even being a WAFL quality ruckman, let alone AFL. Hough, Dewar, Archer Reid and Jack Williams well ahead of him. Allan and Davis are a consideration.
@turnedtoashes I reckon Hough has already established himself, and Jack Williams is a good call. He's proven a lot but likely to go to another level. Be great to see Dewar compete for that spot, he's been good but small forwards are probably the most stacked part of the list
Well just going on who I'm seeing as a positive impact in 2025, regardless of experience and issues like injuries etc. Is Clay Hall I'd be prepared to put him in the 23 round one, Baily Williams I feel is a similar start to his career as Nic Nat was effectively and instinctively playing his role. Lastly Liam Baker was a West Coast fan growing up and excited to sign with a team winning 10 games in the last 3 seasons, I'm sure will search for an extra gear with a smile.
@JeffBurn-b1i it'd be unreal to see Hall start in the 23 in round 1. Absolutely agree on Baker, he's also a player who doesn't like losing, which is what west coast need when the opposition is getting on top of them. Fans will be raving about him in no time!
@CriticalAFL As a whole I can foresee the Eagles winning 7-8 games in Perth for 2025 and they did manage to 2 or 3 wins on the road the last couple years. So as much as keeping a lid on expectations goes, 10 wins is visible.
@JeffBurn-b1i yeah completing a full comparison of the 2025 squad to this year it's a pretty reasonable hope to have. Just a question of how fast they adapt to a new game plan
@CriticalAFL Not sure if you were around to see the late 80's and 90's? But there's always been an element of adversity for the club. Venders would sell eye catching merchandise for Collingwood fans etc, with West Coast wankers printed and take to the game as visible hostility. Chris Lewis said he'd never experienced racism on the level Victorian fans dished out. But at least they were winning and recently it's just depressing.
@@JeffBurn-b1i not so much the late 80s, but definitely the 90s, and all of the stories of Essendon turning off the hot water in their changerooms and flooding the field before WCE training. The worst one was probably the home finals that had to be held at the MCG.
Good list! My personal number one player I think will establish himself is Harry Edwards there’s already spot for him lined up he just needs to grab it, which I think he will do. He’s already shown how competitive he is and I think a full season of seniors will sky rocket his confidence to being genuine key position player in the comp. Exciting times!
Yeah absolutely, it honestly looks like all Harry Edwards needs to do is stay injury free and this will be the year he's recognised as an elite key back
Amazing Video mate! Keep pumping these types of videos out! (Gained a Sub!)
@zooman_AFL8984 legend cheers mate! Looking forward to part 2 going out mid-week👌
Thanks, I agree with all of those and would like to add Jack Williams to that mix.
@Mac-xj3bs 100% good call. He's probably in similar territory to Ginbey whereas he's already made it clear he belongs in the AFL but has a whole extra level likely to come in 2025
Nice wrap up mate 👍 Really hope big Harry shows he's ready to fill Barass's big shoes, I think he can. I have my doubts over Chesser unfortunately (and I'm a glass half full Eagles fan)
Yeah this is really a make-or-break year for Chesser and it likely won't come with as many opportunities at AFL level. Not giving up hope yet though!
Good job mate
Thanks mate
