    As an Spaniard I'd call the courthouse distinctively eclectic Andalusian. It has distinctly southern Spanish vibes with all the tilework and the plain exterior vs ornate interior dynamic (also small windows because sun is not something you want more in those parts of Spain), about the ornate entrances though, that' calls more to the Renaissance and plateresque. Although you didn't speak much about it I'd like to point out one of the roofs in arabesque style compared to the rest that featured more Christian inspired aspect. It's quite an experience learning about these styles coming from the Old Continent, but I do like the cozy vibe it gives compared to the shitty cristal blocks European international style has become...

    I hear these guys all the time at my house at night. Never actually seen one chirping before, though. The source of the sound is weird. Our house faces east, so they usually go further east, a tiny bit north, or way out south. That's their mating call by the way.

    • @electricnaturehiking
      @electricnaturehiking 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, they seem pretty common all over the west coast. I hear them around here for about 7 months or so of the year depending on how much rain we get. It was nice to see one up close, it took me a while to find the source of the noise too until I decided to just go walk around at night and see if any of the nearby creeks still had some water in them. Cool that it’s their mating call, I didn’t know that!

    Back in about 1976, my college's sailing club used to sail out of Channel Islands Harbor. We'd have sailing lessons there, boat races there, and almost invariably would either spend lunch or after sail time at the Whale's Tail restaurant. Fast forward to maybe the 2014/2015 timeframe, I was staying in the area, and ate there frequently. Their docks had been taken over by another college's sailing club, but there was still room for people to sail into the dock for a lunch or dinner. Very sad when it closed. It is definitely worth reviving, no matter how much remediation it might need (and yes, many buildings including the Paz Mar Apartments have had to tent over for termites). This place has one of the best locations. And, it would be great if they could continue to offer transitory dock space for sail-up customers.

    • @electricnaturehiking
      @electricnaturehiking 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a great time back in the 70s! I have heard that it was open since the late 60s and my parents have told me about great experiences they had there in the 80s/90s after college. I lived in a small rental at Silver Strand nearby from 2014-2017, probably one of the best experiences in my life living right near the beach like that. We used to go to the Whale’s Tail every Friday, always live music there too! I have videos and lots of memories from those years. I was pretty sad when it closed since it had become an awesome place to go have a great time on the weekends after a day in the ocean too. Definitely worth repairing and it would be really cool to see a new restaurant open up here! Your idea about that having a dock for customers to sail in would be pretty cool too.
