    The saw is not a 600D but an EZ Original Model as the mine, produced from 1956 to 1957. You can see the difference compared to other similar models thanks to a particular, this saw have the "claw" inside and the bar outside the subsequent ones have the "claw" outside and the bar inside. Take care of your saw, is very very rare, like the mine.

    A square grind gives you LESS material behind the leading edge, hence why it cuts better and is sharper, and why it blunts faster. More material behind an edge isn't sharper, I guess you misspelled. Happens.

    Enjoyed your video. I have a 600D my neighbor gave me about 40 years ago. The date on the owners manual is 1961, same year I was born. We had a big maple log to cut up a few years back and I found a 36" bar and chain on eBay. It pulls it just fine.

    I'm a stihl guy, but I have several old chainsaws, and one of them is a 600D I have a 07 Stihl 08 S10 and so on. I also have a couple of old pioneers. They're made in Canada A.... That 600D has approximately 6 and 3/4 horsepower. It almost has the same power as a modern MS 661. Maybe it is a little heavy but it is a BMF I would love to see you run that with a modern bar and chain and see how it does. Cool saw good video..

    If i had to guess, the chain sharpening was the single biggest difference. And even with that, the cuts on the bigger log went from 6 seconds stock to 5 seconds with the muff mod, carb tune, and chain sharpen.

    I HAD to pull limiters on my 3510. Break in power increase was dramatic once the rings fully seated. Mine tended to get richer as time went on (assume more crankcase vaccum) Dialed it back to appropriate after 10 or 12 tanks, went to a stihl yellow chain, and it runs like a scalded dog for a 35cc saw. Echo does the power/weight ratio thing very well. Plasticky saw but its worth it for a brusher/trail saw/atv saw.

    Hi. I enjoyed the video. I'm a little unclear on some of this. I drill a hole into the baffle that is already there and I drill kinda diagonally upwards? Also for the tuning, you didn't show how to do this in this video. What did you do? You pulled out the two plugs? Then what do you do? Thanks I'm really new to all this. I really like my 2511 but it's bogging down far too easily.

    Hey Max, I came across your video and really appreciate the content. Your before and after of the echoes change in power is probably the best I’ve seen yet. As an arborist I picked up a 2511 about four months ago when my 201 went down and had to go in for repairs. I’ve been wanting to get one for a while and always planned on modifying the muffler like everyone does. I went to get it returned and the first place it wouldn’t stay running, the other place tuned it and now it will stay running but if I shut it down and go to restart it no amount of pulls will get the Saw restarted until I opened up the throttle wide and then it starts on the first pull. Obviously this is a dangerous starting technique on a one-handed saw up in a tree. Do you have any ideas? I have taken the limiters off and could do some minor adjustments but have no idea whether Its starving itself out, Or getting too rich a mix. Open to any suggestions at this point

      Mine is exactly the same way now, and I haven't found a simple solution, but to be honest I haven't been trying that hard. For me starting it with the throttle cracked is not really an issue, I guess if one was worried about the safety of it you could start it with the chain brake on?

    • @dprevish100
      @dprevish100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      chainsawfaddiction Very interesting, I’d love to figure out what it is. I do start it now with the chain break. In the most precarious of balance situation‘s in Smallwood the top of the tree it’s nice to be able to not have to fiddle with just one more thing such as removing the chain break before running it. My plan has been to take a small screwdriver up and try reaching the low a little bit to experiment once it’s had a chance to get warmed up. I’ll keep you all posted

    I think your analyses are totally on-point, but you don't seem to draw as-strong a conclusion that this simply isn't an appropriate "comparison test", I mean it's not "different sports" but still apples-to-oranges...I was blown-away when, last week, I plotted the HP/lbs "power-weight ratio" for my saws (and the 044, 440 and 441 for comparison to my 6** series chinesium clones, one's low-90cc's the other's >100cc's maybe 103-105cc after big bore and all the piston, lower transfer and crankcase porting) and, from 25cc to 36cc to 60cc to 90cc, you get more HP/lbs of powerhead the higher the displacement, I'm unsure where standard 2-strokes in the chainsaw-configuration "top out" for 1-cylinder displacement but it's certainly well over 100cc / cylinder because the "power per CC" curve is nice and linear from 25cc to 90cc+ for my saws (and the 44* series as well), this is all to say that I've begun to look at "comparisons" as being something wherein I want what is job-appropriate, I don't see any practical way to compare my 2511t to my 355t to my 590 to my 660's (rear-handles are all ported / quasi-hot) because they're really all designed/setup, IMO, for bar-length & usage, for instance I care more about how the 590 performs with a 20" in big-wood, bucking, compared to my 2511 using a 12" buried limbing (or my 355t with an 18", buried fully while limbing/trunking a tree) This makes "direct comparisons" nearly impossible & worthless because it becomes "well let's give them different bars which'll further skew results OR let's match bars and skew results the other way", they are truly apples-to-oranges IMO, but if anything I'd wanna see how the 355t performs with 16" or 18", versus a 2511t with 12" or 14" (also the "loss to bar-length", if it's not buried-bar length, becomes far less significant the bigger the total displacement) Great vids am so stoked to have found your channel, am on-break from porting some chinese $30 big bore 56mm 660 setup, I JB'd the intake nearly 50%upwards LOL to accommodate the 80thou shorter skirts they use on these 56mm pistons, so people don't have to port crankcases for fitment (I'd bought it thinking that was requisite LOL) but hey IMO the crankcase//jug transferring of charge is an abomination on 440/660 setups and benefits from ALL mods especially lower transfer//crankcase matching//piston-window portings!!)

      @joescissorhands141 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mentioned it in another video's comment but the power//weight of all my saws and the 44* series are ALL "in order" for HP//lbs, *except* the 2511t, it's slightly higher than the 355t, then the 590, then the smaller 54mm 660 then the 56mm >100cc 660("660", lol, neither is OEM chassis just lots of OEM parts &upgrades/customization, one is built by a renowned builder so I focus on the 660's most even though I use them least...the 2511 should change that, not that I don't fear working on tiny top-handles but, for a small guy like me, the power//weight increase makes it worth it, here in coastal FL there will be many trees where I can get to "ladder height" with just the 2511t (ie a 14" bar, the unit is already "moving a 12" with authority right outta the box" and not even broken-in or allowed to breathe via muffler &likely the airbox like most echo's/powersaws, nevermind the possibilities with porting, the only area/niche my small hands are a positive attribute LOL!!) Will say it again- the 2511t just feels cheaper than the 590, by a lot, the 590 felt a *lil* cheaper than the 355t but not that bad, the 330&360t both felt same as a 355t in fact you can swap many parts like clutch-cover, anyways I'm gonna be wrapping electric tape or bike-tape around my 2511t handle, it just doesn't feel "tough for tight-tree-climbing" which I'm often doing, climbing-through lil forests of epicormic growht on limbwalks with steep, short overhead TIP's and crap like that :P Am not wreckless, mind you, but it just takes so long the heavier &more gear you need!!

  • @joescissorhands141
    @joescissorhands141 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    "Dramastic", I love it am totally adding that to my vocabulary! "starts easily now" I'd LOVE any elaboration on this, I'm "an echo guy" and a big part of that is that they've always been zero-fuss startups for me, my polesaw / 355t / 590 have never ever been problematic w/ startup, but the 2511t I just got -- not even tuned yet, or muff altered yet -- it is weird/anomalous insofar as needing >1 pull for choked-turnover, and oftentimes >1 pull from there for true startup (fast-idle speed startup of course) This is *not* the case w/ the 355t/590/ppt266...I've gotta fathom this is tune&muffler but can't really tell (guess it's hard to tell much of anything b4 break-in is done, mine's on tank 3 still idling and mini-cuts only, echo's exhibit a TON of break-in gains and the 2511t muffler-mod-responsiveness seems nearly identical to that of the 355t (IE choked to open-can basically, sadly looks like little room for any real scavenging am hoping there is will see I'll have mine off to work on it today) Gonna need to check your library because that 440/660 w/ "pipe muffler" is totally one of my biggest interests right now (for my pair of chinesium 660's, maybe even the cs590 I mean if&when I can find a way to simply blueprint my pipes & go see a welder, I can't see any reason not to do every one of my groundsaws...is it true the noise-level of these "l-pipe" or 'bearclaw' pipe mufflers is not anomalous **compared-to** a modded OEM can? IE both are basically offering minimal muffling, but *some* muffling! This video was great, +1'd and subscribed, had to watch through nearly half-dozen 2511t videos to get "an idea" of what to expect when I go to remove & configure the muffler on mine, am hoping you have more 2511t vids it's always nice when you get something like a 660 and realize @Scott Kunz 's whole porting series uses it as-example, or to big-bore said 660's and get to watch Iron Horse's efforts & final triumph w/ them....hoping you have more 2511t content & definitely gonna go see what 44*/66* content you've got, thanks a ton!!

    • @joescissorhands141
      @joescissorhands141 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man am I stoked to see your other 2511 and/or 660(or 440, so similar) content, I KNOW you'll have *some* but not moving forward just yet, have to get my 2511t to 10 tanks (will take all day, with how fuel-efficient it is with OEM-tune, just spark-plug pulled, running low 40's:1 Red Armor in eth-free), once I do its muffler *and* finish top-end #3 for one of my clone-660's, *then* I can get to work on grander plans for the 2511t, I was VERY stoked to see upon re-watch that your gains seem to match "custom-built" mufflers for the 2511t IE nearly 20% or at least 15% HP gain over 10% torque gain, with some other work these things should scorch!! I suspect that, even if you only widened-up the OEM muffler outlets, and tuned it right & removed that screen, that you'd have gotten a good portion of the gains (I have to stress "widening up OEM", to me, means ensuring that my new, widened exit is not choked-off by an internal baffle that's smaller-than it, I'm very much like you in that I see too many going too-far with muff mods, I do not want to defeat scavenging or backpressure - or even sound-dampening, entirely - but with echo's the break-in, and subsequent leaning-out, and removal of OEM choke-points, seems to give a reliable >10% to their powersaws! Thanks again for the great vid it's awesome seeing someone legitimate calling it worthy of topping a tree despite not having that quarter-pitch conversion or even timing advance or anything further than muffler, and I've got a 355t for heavier cuts anyways I just wanted to see my 2511t be "more useful" so it can be used more, I'm a small guy so small climbsaws are a god-send for me, power//weight is everything and despite the fact that larger displacement almost always means better horsepower-per-CC, the 2511t at 25cc's actually slightly edges out the 355t (8lbs//2HP) which is very impressive, the 355t is nearly identical to 200/201t Re power//weight spec am surprised they're not far more popular, good to see Echo come crushing it with this 2511!!

    Hi Max, I just purchased a 2511t and have used it the past two days for limbing. Over 5 inches I have grabbed my 201t as the little echo doesn't have the nut. After watching your video on the muffler mod and tuning it I have hope. It is so much lighter and nicer to use. Thanks for making these videos. I am still unsure about the stops on the carb adjustment but maybe it will be self explanatory once I pull the carb off.

    • @chainsawfaddiction5918
      @chainsawfaddiction5918 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Such a huge difference those mods made, in Paper Birch (our hardest wood around here) stock 5 inches was nearly to much for the little echo, and then after the mods I was chunking out a birch with the 14 inch bar completely buried. It's all about rpm with them little saws, so open up the muffler, tune it good, keep your chain very sharp and your takers high.

      Updates? Echo's are notorious for freakishly high "break-in gains", all saws / 2-strokes experience this but echo's exhibit not only a great deal of it but they come with 2 'chokes' one the muffler portage area being too tight, and the saws being crazy-rich, usually you can stay within the limiters just leaning them in that range with the muffler opened a bit (I'm just about to check my muffler out, saw is sitting out back idling-through warm-up tanks now, with me occassionally going outside to do short cuts in-wood of course, I was lucky in that my dealer lets me take a unit w/o actually no-load goosing the throttle in-store, like Stihl reps are required to and many echo reps still do do, but my guy was cool to just "burp it, turn-over, start-up to idle-RPM for 10sec., kill it and TAKE MY $$ rofl, he only had 1 unit after the one I got and, after fighting for a cs590 (floor model, at that) like 6mo ago, I was not taking chances-- I'd lost my 355t, so I'd thought, and had a big job to finish -- while doing tank-1 break in on the 2511t, and looking-over my 355t, I realized that, for 1st time ever, I'd made that rookie mistake of putting oil (canola) into my fuel reservoir!! For days I'd been priming/pumping canola through the carb/cylinder, thinking the saw needed tear-down, I was idling the 2511t & looked at the 355t again - I'd known I'd refilled it right-before it'd died, but checked for fuel-leakage "in case" and instead of viscous red fluid (eth-free 90oct w/ Red Armor around 45:1), I saw thick yellow (canola) oil :P I flushed it twice, and the 355t is back to life, but I'm a small guy LOL so I couldn't go return my 2511t, or sell it as I'm pretty sure I can do "quick flip for profit" with what I paid, but holding this thing - and being a smaller climber - I would NEVER give it up!! My 355t will go back to where it belongs, tied to the base of my climbline to weigh-down the rope for my ascents, and to be there if I need it before I come-down after "getting to trunkwood" ;D Eager to hear your unit's progress & current status, I found that on my 2511t's carb settings, the 1/4-turn limiters came to me "fully rich" flowed CCW the full 1/4 turn, I leaned the L out the full 1/4 turn and it gave so much trouble starting, hated it, so yeah I still have a whole 1/4 turn CW to lean-out as the ring settles-in and I flow the muffler, I don't think I'll need >1/4 turn CW leaning to accommodate that, would love to hear what you needed in your unit (echo limiters are very easy to remove if you know how to get them in 1 piece, they can be in a nightmare if you don't, or if they aren't lined-up perfectly, my 590's took <5min, my 355t took half an hour or more :P )

    great video, I too have forgotten about semi chisel : ) 99% of the time I'm running full chisel, full comp, round file (mostly Oregon). Been looking at square ground, but just haven't made the leap. I know once I do, I'll be kicking myself for not doing it sooner. I've never heard someone with a square grind say, nah round filing is better!

    • @chainsawfaddiction5918
      @chainsawfaddiction5918 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I will say this, when someone asks me if it is worth it to switch to square, my reply is generally; Yes and No...it is a bear to learn by hand, the files are expensive and don't really last as long, and the gains in speed and/or durability are...moderate. Definitely there, but moderate. I would liken it to an addict "chasing the dragon". The first time you have a properly sharp square chain on properly operating saw it's like the best feeling in the whole wood world.....but then sometimes you struggle to get the angles right with the file, your neck and back strain from getting in just the right position to do the filing, you mess up a whole chain somehow. You get a chain just right and then cut into a tree that someone broke a knife tip off in and destroy all your meticulous work. I believe it is easier to learn to sharpen round file, and easier to master. But when you get that square just right, nothing will compare. New videos coming down the pipe soon guys, any requests?

    I run these daily. When the chain is right and not too grabby it’s awesome. I’ll keep using it probably too long. All limbs gone and chunking a log down at 10-12”. In a track lift most often so once to that point very easy to just come down and swap to a 201 with a 16”, or echo 620 if there’s a lot to do. We use the 620 because we put a full wrap handle on it so it hangs on the basket really nice. We throw the smaller saws into a mounted bar holder.

    Nice old saw, it was built at a time when robustness and durability were more important than highspeed...

    Good job. Saw sounds great . What size hole did you drill on the baffle ? And whats ur tunning set at ?

      Well that's kinda hard to answer since I used the grinder, if I had to put a number to it, using just a regular drill bit I would say the hole in the baffle is around a half inch. And as for the tuning, there definitely is no way to answer that, unless I get a tachometer. I just kept cutting with it and making tiny tiny adjustments on the carb until it seemed to be just right

    Just take 2 drywall screws and back out the carb blockers .remove them?

    • @chainsawfaddiction5918

      That would work as well yes, but be careful tuning, makes it pretty easy to lean it out to far.

    Alright so your new clip told me to come to this clip and now you have suckered me in. Let's see what that old saw can do with a new chain.

    I know Max. He doesn't do ANYTHING half-heartedly. Felling trees and planning tricky cuts doesn't have to be intimidating. Max does an admirable job making these tasks approachable and enjoyable for anyone.

    Those are so cool! I'd never seen one before but can totally get their value in the field.

      I will say, they are rather heavy to lug into the woods, but much lighter than the guilt of dropping a sketchy tree onto a house, or a car, or a people, so definitely a nice tool to have at your disposal.

    This makes me want a monster pro saw even more

      I mean, I know this is gonna sound a little snarky, but go get one then man, I think I paid 450 and 400 for the two 372xps that I have, and aside from some general maintenance stuff they were good to go. If you are willing to do your research, and due diligence, you can buy a USED monster pro saw for about the cost of a NEW medium sized homeowner saw.
