I think it's wonderful that there are still people who know what the Oehler system is. I had two old (430 Hz) Buffet-Crampon clarinets, in A and Bb, in the Oehler system, and I loved them.

@@therealzilch oh yes, I actually have both a Boehm system clarinet and an Oehler system clarinet. I bought both to A/B the two systems and see for myself if there was actually any difference between the two systems aside from the fingerings. I've played the Boehm system clarinet for year's (being here in the United States, that's typically what is available) after I had a chance to A/B the two systems on the the very first day, I was sold. The Oehler system is the clarinet for me. It has a softer tone on the ears and it also has a warmer more focused tone. Plus the mouthpiece is not as big in the mouth. I truly love the Oehler system clarinet most and am looking forward to getting a set from LEITNER and KRAUS; a Bb soprano clarinet and a Bb basset clarinet.

Around $10k for the Buffet one, and $12k for the Backun one

I think that he's playing a modified Buffet R13, extended to low B by Stephen Fox.

Mozart

It's Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, he's playing excerpts from each movement, the last being the 2nd movement. I've never heard it played on the Basset Clarinet before, so it sounds unusual in the lower registers when the Bb soprano clarinet jumps up the octave.

Thanks for commenting. Yes, I had more places where I played the low B throughout the composition at actual performances. Also, I would love it if you can share the specific measures where you suggest the low B be played.

@@1junwatabe: Concerto 1st Movement, the recap of a certain melody. Measure 295 should probably be played, BDFD BGFD B (ending in low B). Then this is a possible rendition of 299: BDFD BGFD BGFD lowBDFD C. Actually, given the orchestral background, the soloist should have freedom to decide how to play that melody recap. The Quintet: 1st mvt. measure 147 might go from B to low B instead of F to low F. 4th mvt., I'm now unsure about the staccato passage. But there's the 3rd variation, the clarinet could play low C up to C, low B up to B, low C up to B, C down to Low C.

It can play down to it's written B. It is still a clarinet in A otherwise.

It goes down to low B. Most basset clarinets go to low C, but Stephen Fox makes (used to make?) the to low B. Presumably, since the player was playing Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, it was in the key of A.

This is a conversion, but Buffet does sell complete basset clarinets

Basically he takes the lower joint of your current A clarinet and grafts some more wood onto it, slaps on a bunch of new keys and tone holes, takes yur upper joint and makes a small key modification, and boom

Thank you for your comment. If you are referring to Bb to Bb basset clarinet conversion, you might want to check with Stephen Fox, he might be able to provide such a service. If you are thinking about Bb to A basset clarinet conversion, I do not think it is practically possible. Thanks!

Where would I be able to get a basset in Bb.. That is what I prefer..

It seems to me the low B is more useful on a B♭ instrument than on the A instrument, since there isn't much call in the repertoire for the low B on an A clarinet. However, if you were to play the exact same pitches on a B♭ instrument, you'd need the extra semitone to compensate for the entire instrument being a semitone higher. Otherwise you would not be able to transpose the low written C on an A clarinet part. Low B might also make sense on a bass clarinet, to give it the ability to match the low A on a bassoon (which itself is not ordinarily on the instrument, but is sometimes called for anyhow). What I'd like to find is an alto clarinet with just one extra note, low D. This would give it the compass of a basset horn, while having the advantage of otherwise being a moderately common instrument. (You may consider this two extra notes, as the low E♭ is _not_ always present on an alto clarinet. I had one which lacked low E♭.)

Not really. It sounds like what it is, a normal clarinet with extra notes added to the bottom. Those particular pitches might well sound similar on an alto clarinet, but the location of the throat tones, the break, and the upper range are all _vastly_ different compared to an alto clarinet.
