I'm interested in giving the newer games a shot. I haven't played any of the DQM games other than the first two. I've heard that Joker and beyond are very different mechanically.

It's such an awesome game. I'm super glad my friend Tim introduced me to the series.

Same era, so I can see that. This game was originally on the PS1, although I think they have ported it newer systems now too. I really like the aesthetic, it kind of reminds me of claymationish style of Super Mario RPG.

The music in this game is really on point. But while the music is cozy, that's not the word I would use to describe the gameplay haha.

Yeah, there's a lot of things in this game that will knock down your chaos frame. If I recall correctly, capturing a town or having a town captured by the enemy drops by 2 while liberating a town only raises by 0.5. Thinking back it's really not surprising I only ever got the bad ending on this game when I was a kid.

Yeah, I really like the fact that you can learn enemy abilities in this game, but for the sake of keeping the show moving I didn't want to spend too long trying to get the abilities. If one person could learn it while the rest finished the fight that's cool, but I wanted to try and keep things moving.

You are correct. If you take a neutral town it will always count as a capture. This always messed me up as a kid and was one of the big deterrents to me getting the good ending when I was younger (in the few times I actually completed the game when I was a kid). And capturing a town lowers your chaos gauge by way more than liberating a town raises it, so one capture can completely do an otherwise liberated map.

I love this game but it has a lot of dead air. Editing is definitely necessary since half the time in this game is just spent watching people walk around haha

Yeaaaah, some of the later puzzles in this game can be a real problem haha

I'm glad you've been enjoying it! This is easily one of my favorite games on the N64 and I feel like it doesn't get enough love.

I really love this game and am really excited to be playing it for the show. This game can get pretty complicated and the missions can be super long, but it's such a fun game.

I do really like dragons. You would need to either mod the game to start with a dragon or put in a stipulation that the run doesn't start until you can recruit your first dragon. But I think you can get a couple snakes in the first world.

The Metal King Slimes will learn it at level 34 if they have good enough stats. The hard part is getting enough health on them.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I really love the Digimon games and this is such a great call-back to the original Digimon World (but with massive QoL improvements!).

Nice! This game definitely gave a lot more room for cool teambuilding than the first (in part largely with just having more monsters to work with). One of these days maybe I'll reload our file and work on filling out the library.

I'm really glad Tim got me playing this series. I never knew about them as a kid, but fell in love with them the moment we started them on the channel.

@@ZRyuKageZ If you haven't played the first game I'd give that a go. It's definitely a bit rougher around the edges, but it still has a lot of charm. And if you are familiar with the early dragon quest games there's a ton of fun easter eggs sprinkled through. I've heard mixed reviews on the Joker series but I haven't tried them myself. They are on my list to check out at some point. From my understanding they work very differently mechanically than the first two games. I have heard very good things about Dark Prince on the Switch. I think it follows similar mechanics to the Joker series, so I've been waiting to play those first before giving Dark Prince a shot. If you want regular dragon quest as opposed to the monster series, DQ3 is a classic definitely worth checking out. There are several versions of it including a new 2D HD remake. And I personally really liked DQ5 and 6 (I've been playing through the DQ anthology on my own time and am currently working on 8). I played the cell phone version for 4, 5, and 6 which worked really well graphically and convenience wise, although the controls took a little getting used to.

Hope you enjoy! I really love this game, but it can definitely get a little confusing at times if you aren't familiar with it.

I do really want to play it, I'll probably play it with Tim. That being said, I'm not sure when we will get to it as we have a huge backlog of games to get to. I almost feel like it would be better to start with Joker just to ease into the new systems. On a side tangent, I've been trying to find a physical copy but I weirdly can't find it anywhere in stores. I know I could just order it online, but it's still so weird to me that physical copies just aren't carried in stores in my area for some reason.

​​@@brendesugames1236 yeah that is weird about stores not having it. But I got it on steam and its really beautiful on steam. You might wanna get it on there. No online play there if that matters though

Nice, I don't usually use Map Magic just because I have other spells I want to use for that slot. But knowing the map is very helpful. I never realized how helpful the Beast Tail you can buy for 400 bucks is. Takes up one inventory slot but will show you the direction of the stairs on your map without having to even use the item.

@@brendesugames1236 map magic shows the map and where the hole is so if you get that you save $400!

True, but that 400 is a one time purchase. Having the item in your inventory lets you see the direction of the hole. You never have to actually use the item. I start using it a little later in the series and it's been super helpful. But MapMagic definitely gives you more information. As long as you have a magic slot for it, it is definitely very useful to have.

I know right! The early form Digimon are (mostly) all so adorable. And then they become living weapons....

I always enjoy getting to do games with Alyssa, our schedules just tend to make it difficult to get recording time together. I'm really glad we're playing through this game

They really are. I don't mind having the recolors when they are the same class (Veedramon vs GoldVeedramon vs RedVeedramon) but when the digivolution is just the same model with a slightly different color its really takes the wind out of my sails.

I haven't heard of that one, I will have to take a look. PS1 is an era of games that really passed me by so I'm sure there are tons of great games that I just don't know of.

@@brendesugames1236 its such an under-rated game just like Tomba so very much highly recommend trying it also they announced remaking tomba 2 which im really looking forward to aswell

Yeah, this is a really cool game in the wide variety of ways it can let you solve fights. I do feel like the first run through will always be rough, but the game is designed around playing through the story multiple times. Honestly, even though it doesn't feel that way, the game is really a rogue-lite more so than an RPG.

We've actually been talking about it. Neither of us have any familiarity with the game, but it seems like a fun time. So it's definitely on the table, we would just need to find a copy.
