We continue on, with me making some serious mistakes as the Warsaw Pact. Also note, the rulebook indeed puts limitations on using multiple movement types in a turn, so a WP air mobile got moved too far forward. That will be corrected in the next video.

looks great, cant wait to get it, been forever! so glad to see its finally out
Should their have been an attrition phase at end of winter turn?
the jargon in the rules is espacially a problem for us non native english speakers. Some of concept I really don't understand (and I play ASL !)
This was helpful.
great stuff. thanks for doing it. very helpful series for prepping new German players
I saw the first series years ago and now its back
very cool about your dad
I opened the box and I was just thinking how to store all the cards after I sleeve them. I think I will have to put some of them under the inner flaps since there is not enough room elsewhere
When you have not enough resources for a mandatory card (must in text) then you discard and draw another without moving the card draw marker. So it can come back later to bite you in the .’’’’
1:13:30 like comparing ASL to combat Commander it seems.
Again, thank you so much for doing this series. Playing Mechwarrior 5 and having a cold adult beverage while listening to your playthrough. Have The Deadly Woods set up on the dining room table waiting for me. My old man (late 40s) brain gets overheated looking at all the turn one special rules. Your breakdown makes it seem a LOT less intimidating. Talk about every thought. Take the pauses when you need to analyze. Thank you!
Appreciate hearing your impressions.
Good refresher. Appreciate it.
Thank you. Nice to see the bits.
Thanks for the review. Quite helpful. Audio seemed a bit soft.
no nintendo DS involved. I am disappointet
I have a feeling ive played this game before in this format a long time ago with my father. This brings nostalgia, cheers mate
After seeing the map scenario, its over before it began for Denmark.
Thank for this video Steven, and the previous one with the couple of turns. They have been very helpful to me to better understand what to expect in the game that I recently got. I am enjoying your videos, so I subscribed myself to your channel. Best regards from Spain
I think this is an awesome game, can’t wait to see your take on it.
Very well done review. Thanks!
I agree for as short of a rulebook as there is, it is very dense when you actually start laying things on the board. I have found that Zucker is EXPLICIT in what he means but maybe my brain works different as I usually need to try it versus just reading about it. That is, if he says in the same paragraph "Artillery and Infantry can do xxxx. Units can do yyy." It is LIKELY that the term "Units" means what he said in the first sentence (ie, Units in this context means Infantry & Artillery and therefore NOT cavalry, leaders, baggage trains, ...). In another paragraph if he says "combat units can do zzzz" you go into the glossary to see what "combat units" means and its infantry, cavalry & artillery (but NOT leaders, vedettes, trains & markers).
I would like to have seen this game played.
I agree the rulebook could use a go over and polish by a professional technical writer to just clear up those things that are still unclear. With regards to 'divisional integrity,' I believe all the units of the same nationality that share the same color stripe across the top of the counter are in the same division. Each division has one, and only one, leader (whether an officer or commander-officer) that also shares that same color of stripe. Divisions are color coded, which is much easier to see than trying to read the unit designations. The shared units and leader color bar system is the same as used in GMT's Great Battle of the American Civil War.
Eric, no. divisional integrity does not mean national integrity. Not to be pedantic but it means exactly what it says. If you look at the counters to left of the NATO symbol there are two lines of text. the first is the Corps designation, the second is the Division designation. Divisional integrity means if those numbers match they can stack as a division. I believe this replicates the fact that the units were assigned to divisions in a corps and were used to working together. As a noob in this series as well I think there is a need for clarity in the rules, examples of play, and illustrated in color examples. The game system is thirty plus years old, but the presentation doesn't need to be vintage as well. These rules, like Mark Herman, need a George Lucas check. IE. yeah you make great stuff, but someone needs to yank the chain and say George, your brilliant, but you've lost people and super fans defending every article of the rules is not helpful.
Please take this in the kind and helpful spirit intended, because I watched everything. I love the game and I very much appreciate you posting this. (And I am speaking only of what I expect and would like to see.) A video series for a wargame where you tell us what you want to do, and all the permiations and options, then skipping to a very general summary of what happened after you did it off camera is of almost no value to anyone who wants to learn the game or see it played. Do fans watch war movies to hear and see what is goingat the start of the movie, then skips to characters after the events talking about what happened? I, maybe others, would like to learn the game, see the rules and procedures applied, as you play. I want to see the sequence of play, rolling the die for command, moving units and counting spaces applying the terraine movement costs, declaring units to be in combat and calculating modifiers, rolling the die, reading the combat results, applying retreats and advances. The rules of the wargame system. I recognize that you are playing, rules cyphering, and filming simultaneously. If the camera could be off when thinking about what you are going to do and looking up stuff, I don't think long videos would be a problem because something would be happening. I refer you to Counter Attack and Rough Swordsman Wargamer videos for playthrough styles where a viewer can learn how to play the game as it is played. AGAIN, I am not at all trying to be cruel or dismissive of your time and efforts. I am telling you honestly what I would like to see, and maybe I'm an average wargame fan.
@@eric1752 hi Eric. I appreciate the comment. The hard reality is videos do indeed take time to make and record. My video series style is to show those more specific actions, steps, and phases of play in the initial videos covering a game. You will notice across my channel the 1st turns of some games take multiple videos to show that fidelity. I simply cannot so this for entire long campaigns. Other channels rarely show that level of fidelity for the entirety of a long campaign. There is a distinction between videos where you can learn a game a bit by example and a purposefully 'learn-to-play' made video. Mine are definitely more of the former, if at all. If video creation slows down playing the game, that is a cost to me directly in terms of time. For Fleurus 1794 I did do a high level how to play video and you can see more detail there than this video. It takes more time to narrate a turn played than for me to just play it and I can describe the aftermath of several turns faster than it would take to show it in detail. It may not 'work' for everyone. Whatever niche I hit in the community is great. I am not monetizing my content and have no interest to do so, so there is a balance of making this work for me personally and my limited free time as a working husband and father versus the expectations of anyone viewing. I dont buy expensive video equipment, I dont ask for patron donations, I don't have a partner doing editing. In simple terms, I do what I can. Some videos I do, I admit, are less organized and I regret those.
Lets hope its more playable than Red Strike. 🤔
Screening operations are performed by Cav/Recon units (my supply sergeant experience was with a cav troop) The main point is to prevent regular units from being caught by surprise or unprepared, at least so in the context of BCS. Screens also make it more difficult for opponents to learn about friendly opps.
The BCS system puts you in the position of a brigade commander. (even though it’s called the batalion combat system). The OCS system puts you into the position of a division commander. (I worked as a supply person both at the brigade HQ level and at a company/troop supply level in the Army.)
Looking forward to this. After watching your Dark Valley series, I was able to be able to do a solo run through of it. Hope this will give me motivation to break out my copy of NATO. Thank you.
I've been trying to learn this game and your videos have been extremely helpful thank you!
Got a solo play of this in earlier in the year. Great game
The old one was fun.
Good video Steve, now I regret selling my copy 🙂
Sounds like a great subject.
Epic look forward to watching
Thanks for the Review/Overview, very helpful!
~ I'm gonna steal your idea to keep the cards along the top.. Thanks again Steven for all you do to enhance our hobby!
@@grimmnorsefury8062 I was inspired by pictures in the rulebook/playbook so I can't really say it was my idea. :)
Nice review. I have this and am looking forward to playing through it
Can't wait to get my hands on this game .Thank you very much for a great review. ;-)
Thanks. Super Review. I can think about many games like this. For example : "I the Sun King" about Louis XIV, or " I the old Fritz about Frederick the great.
I pretty much agree right down the line. The one thing that I found aggravating was that some of the rules were difficult for me to interpret the first time I saw them. I don't think anything is missing from the rules, but because of the philosophy of minimizing the rules overhead and making the cards self explanatory, there are some cards and situations which were not clear to me the first time I saw them. Clarifications are definitely needed and they have been making those clarifications. I can just see the game being frustrating the first few times and expecting someone to keep at a game that is frustrating them is sometimes a big ask.
This game sucks. You don't lose glory by getting a divorce, if anything, that's when your glory starts!
😂
Thanks for the GREAT analysis and review. You confirmed my impressions of the game, which is on the way to me, and I'm really looking forward to diving into it. On a positive note, the designer has stated that, if game sales go well, there will be "expansion decks" which will both broaden and deepen the story. And, I LOVE the concept of the "Challenge" run through the game. Although, Bonaparte undoubtedly may not have done it, for game purposes it is a fantastic strategy. Nick Stasnopolis
Thanks for the video, I might even buy the game. The problem with historical simulations is that we know how it developed and ended. Young Napoleon didn't know he'd have to decide whether to invade Russia 30 years down the line, but we know this topic would come up. So, the simulation is not perfect. Thanks again for your in-depth analysis.
Great review, thanks. I really hope we see a volume 2 with another historical figure.
I Adolf 😂
I think that’s really dodgy that you died on first card. I mean really? I find this game interesting but not a fan of a die roll deciding if you live or die. Terrible mechanic in my opinion. The die roll makes the game too luck based and not much strategy going on at all. Gives me a choose your own adventure vibe.
@@warpaint9385 I have played the game over 10 times now and can say that ended up being an outlier.
@@stevendolges8372 You could have tried using Napoleon's Luck for a re-roll at least!
If it helps, he could've used Napoleon's luck to re-roll the die.
looking forward to see which side your going to choose to be for these games.
@@sheacahill5506 given I play solitaire so much... probably both sides!
