OH NO! I Need a Hole! The Pond Heater Saga
มุมมอง 1736 ปีที่แล้ว
The Greater Toronto Water Garden & Horticultural Society holds an annual "pond tour" somewhere in the greater Toronto area. Each year we visit water gardens covering everything from amateur DIYs to professional installations. My pond has frozen over before I could put in the pond de-icer so I ned to make a big hole.

This is really clear and so useful. Thank you
Thank you for the awesome video and instructions 👍
12/3 outlets, 14/3 light fixtures K.I.S.S.
GREAT VID ... many thanks, Mate. Pump wasn't working. Cleaned it up as per your instruction...now working! Many thanks
This is awesome! Are there any more recent instructions on how to do this with the newest Google updates?
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this tutorial. My pump is fully working again x
Wire not rated for direct burial
Really staples. this would be removed in New Zealand. 230volts 50HZ
Wouldn’t pass inspection in Ontario either lol. Probably wouldn’t pass inspection anywhere.
I have to clean mine once a week. Should I take it apart like this every time?
Great information thank you!
I have the same exact hat, where did you get yours?
THANKS :)
If this guy had his work inspection by a Certified Electrical Inspector... IT WOULD FAIL MISERABLY... there are numerous code violations here... Do not follow this clown!!!
Tell us how its done?
Where can i buy this laguna powerjet in lazada
Sid’s Ponds in Mississauga sids-ponds.com/ or Marquis in Vaughan. www.marquisgardens.ca/
How much is this laguna powerjet pump
Aquascape has really taken over the market lately. You can still buy this pump from Marquis Gardens in Vaughan for about $250. Expensive I know but I’ve had mine for well over 10 years and as long as I take care of it, likely at ,east 10 more. It is also good at handling solids (pond debris) so I hardly ever have to pull it out to clean it mid season.
Excellent; thank you very much. This method worked. Amazing how "little" was involved to make it work, but did the trick.
Thank you very much.
You can't hardwire cord, you can't use anything smaller than 14 gauge for a 15a circuit. Outside must use teck cable or pipe, and that receptacle must have a bubble cover on it
Thank you for your video. I’ve seen so many but nobody mentions the 3 wire cable like you did. I bought lots of 3 wire light fixtures and bout 12/2 wire. I just couldn’t figure out how to connect them. The lights are outdoor rates LED lights. I guess I have to return te low voltage 2 wire cable I bought right? Thanks. Take care.
I need to change the wire from house to garage in a old house (1920s) where the wires are ran overhead, all concrete on the ground. The wire thats there now is NOT for outside due to the coding is coming off. What gage and what kind of wire to use. By the way, these wires is how the garage is powered ( once again overhead) ? I was thinking water and uv protection 12 gage? Please advise thank you. Oh....my run is 50 foot! HOUSE TO GARAGE.
very helpful - thank you
Can you share some idea on where to get an outdoor electrical wire designed for extreme weather...am looking for 12 gauge 3...thank you
Get UF (underground feed) and that is direct burial. Usually grey in color. Menards has it in different lengths in 25 foot increments.
Thank you for this video. I had to replace the impeller and had no idea how to get into it. Now if you could show me how to get out and replace the shaft, that would be wonderful. I am saving this as I have never cleaned inside my actual (inside) pump at the end of season. Thus the replacements I guess...
I always thoroughly clean my pumps at the end of the season so they are ready for the next. As you can see I have several pumps but it takes less than an afternoon to do them all. The secret is to clean them while they are still wet. If I don’t want to clean them when I pull them out, I’ll keep them in buckets of water so the crud doesn’t dry out.
For anyone watching this video as a reference, wiring should always be protected when it can be damaged. This usually means running it through conduit or an approved raceway. Some areas allow you to run unprotected NM Romex if it's high up enough, in these cases you will still need waterproof cable, but with UV protection.
Helpful video, running some cable outside for some lights I'm setting up on the porch
Massive help - thank you.
When you open The MZ21100AB pump, which comes with an electrical plug for 12 volt lighting, to get to the impeller and magnetic rotor, the secondary cover twists off and is not pried. Every thing else is the same. Good video. Thanks
Your tutorial helped me run a SeaSunStar unit that I had found discarded and would not run. The unit seemed clean. After cleaning it as you demonstrated, the unit is running very smoothly. Apparently, they are very sensitive to dirt and slime even if you can't see them. I also didn't know that you can open them and get to the impeller. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge!
The number 3 on a cable does not mean hot neutral and ground. The ground never counts in the number. For exemple a 14/3 contains 4 wires: one ground, one neutral and two hot wires (one black and one red).
Why would anyone use electrical wiring smaller than 14 gauge? If I were to rewire my entire house I would use nothing but 12 gauge. Do they even make 16,18, or 20 gauge wire?? Is it different in Canada?
I’m looking to change my wires coming from my circuit box that goes to my pool pump. What kind of outside wires do I need? The one that’s out there now has been there since 1987 and it’s old and rusted. What gauge and my pool pump is 3/4 HP with 115/230v
What amperage or wattage is the pump and what is the distance from the circuit box to the load/pump? This would determine the resistance on the cable and would dictate the gauge of wires needed to be run. Volts * Amps = watts or Watts / Volts = amps As most codes require an insulated copper ground wire you would need individually insulated copper 10/2 THWN (Thermoplastic Heat and Water Resistant Nylon Coated) - Three wires total. Bury the wires running them inside of a SCH-80 PVC conduit. Do not use a Romex or UF-B cable. The 10 AWG wire should support up to 100 ft (from box to load), drawing 115v @ 15 amps. It is recommended to run the pump on it's own circuit. If you need more amperage or a longer distance, use a thicker gauge of wire such as 8 AWG. Otherwise you will burn up the pump due to voltage drop or the wire insulation due to the resistance. Going with a thicker gauge wire (smaller number) will be more expensive, but will reduce the load resistance and subsequently the voltage drop. Bury the cable 18-12 inches deep and be sure to add a marker over the cable, such as caution tape or orange mesh at 10-6 inches. Be sure to check the codes in your county for exact depths. Lastly, be sure to connect the cable into a GFCI beaker at the box.
Couldn't you use a higher number awg depending on your amp draw? For example, I just want to run some low power devices (1amp) for about 120'? It seems that I could use 18 awg and the voltage drop is 1.28%. for a single set of conductors.
Use UF under ground wire
Speaking as an Engineer yes this would work perfectly fine but if you look at it as an electrician you gotta follow code and use whats specified unfortunately if you want to stay legal
Try to use a single cable without splices. Also use the thickest gage you can get. Resistance causes voltage loss. Splices cause resistance. Thin gage wire also causes resistance.
Helpful video..im looking to run a long cable joining to another house..what is the longest span without haveing to use joiners??thank u
The concern is the voltage drop over long distances. Use this online calculator from ECE Canada . www.calculator.net/voltage-drop-calculator.html
Great video showing how simple and inexpensive a water feature can enhance a patio or balcony. Jake D.
Thank you for the video! We just bought this unit for our pond. This video will come in handy, come end of season.
