Roland MC101 generative rhythm trick. Mc707 Zen-core glitch style.
Technique inspired by @danieklerr video: th-cam.com/video/ZYkpGwSawP0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LkWRGgrKiaVqwso2
Im just using the 4 partials in the the #zencore synth engine. I believe there is a way to do this with a multisample or font of up to 127 sounds per partial or voice. Unfortunately I have yet to figure out how to do that.
Project or patch shown in video including samples: drive.google.com/file/d/1wJ3VCV_Ql58r8v67TwgHyzmYsjIO4y5n/view?usp=drive_link
@danieklerr really explores and squeezes the most out of his gear with creative techniques. He inspires me to work differently with my gear and I plan to try this idea, but with loop samples next time rather then 1-shots.
Any questions, ideas, or advice, please drop a comment below.

Dont know but that rhythm i love ( few tunes ive done from old motion seq )
I have sampler version
You've given me some really great ideas here! Thank you so much! The setup you demonstrated around the 16:00 mark will take me a minute to figure out, but I think it will be worth it. I'm going to link this video in the description of my MC-101 video, and the next one as well. ❤
16 min mark is setting a knob to coarse tune and then randomizing with motion designer. Same technique just to pitch. It's very interesting how the interface is a midi controller and under that all the controls can be adjusted. SOOOO much like my old Dave Smith Tetr4! I 100% want to do a video on small gear interface and workflow.
Love this. The micromonsta 2 really packs a punch.
if you had to pick only one, this or the electribe, which would it be and why?
The electribe is probably my perfect groovebox in terms of workflow and interface. Roland has superior sound quality, a more powerful synth engine, and a better sequencer. I would pick the electribe because it's more fun to play.
Just gont one of these, thanks for the tips!
Useful info for when I get an SQ-1 in the near future. Thanks.
Loving distortion ❤

you just changed my life :D
My Volca Drum Based Avant Garde Album fakework.bandcamp.com/album/nonlinear-dreams
Wow, with the 4 bar sequencer and the limited modulation options I didn't expect this machine to be able to handle this genre, but you got some really nice sounds out of it!
Thanks, I think the next one will have even more sonic range! I personally like to 'perform' my machines more than program. So, 4 bar limitation is hardly ever a problem for me. But using an external sequencer really unlocks some cool possibilities as the mutes on the E2 are for the sequencer, not the sounds!
Great info, but I hate to be a downer to your viewers: if you speed up playback to 1.5 you might enjoy it. Without a script and zero editing it kind of drags.
All good, I appreciate constructive criticism. Thank you for watching. Yes, it's very free form and low production quality. But I want to keep it loose and casual as I want the music and toying around gear to always be my main focus. Making videos is more of a way to nerd out and find like-minded people to chat with.
It's good for psych trance bass lines ,I like using the d key ,and finding what comes out when you use the motion sequence it always comes out very dark with me tip use the delay at the end
inspiring! I didn't know what that setting "really" did until this video. thank you! question: when you're in the step edit menu, how did you move to the next step so quickly after editing the note? I only know to back out of the note menu on the step, then wheel over to the next note I want to edit.
Makes me very happy to inspire others to explore their gear more! I deffinently think trigger hold and motion sequencing unlocks the electribe's magic! Check out this video about step edit. th-cam.com/video/_0s64chYfNo/w-d-xo.html Basically, when you are on the note page, you can press the step pad you want to edit.
Thanks for the video and info. Can you please share your setup for battery operated ER-1?

Not so proud owner of the same gear... the fact that EDM oriented gear don't have a proper arpegiator in it... it was sad back then and it's even more sad now. But it's a Korg thing. There's only two things in this world that Korg seem to despise - hold button and an arpegiator lol
I have two 4-arm monitor stands with VESA mounts. Made up right angle brackets for each mount. Not only can I tilt-angle each shelf individually, but also move them back and forth and side to side, AND, it leaves my desktop for a keyboard or even MORE GEAR 😄 I also like them DJ 2 or 3 tier portable racks.
I want to try something like this. What did you use for the right angle brackets? Like a keyboard tray style thing?
@@MyLittleSynths Initially I intended to use a stand like the white Ikea one at 00:37. But I found that having all shelf space and weight forward from the VESA bracket was not ideal. So I ended up cutting up 1-inch right angle steel connectors and bolting on the shelves about third away from the rear edge - this gives better weight distribution over the VESA mount, and allows the device to be pushed back farther. The shelf itself is just a flat timber/particle board. To stop the devices from sliding off forward I mounted drawer handles at the centre of the front edge, at right angle up - these double up as positioning handles when adjusting entire shelf. These days you can also get laptop stands which are based on monitor mounts - basically the just add factory made right angle bracket which bolts onto the VESA mount. However, at least where I am, they are expensive for they offer.
Trigg hold is for runing the whole patern of the track in trigg smoth only makes the sound of the track in c
Congrats on 300 subs! The visuals fit the vibe.
Visual concept was to be reactive, only I ran out of cpu. Spent a lot of time converting audio to midi and then didn't use it at all. Maybe in a future video or project... idk. Thank you, though. I want all live streams to be alternate reality.
What your doing is called motion sequencing, which is a common feature found on most modern electronic instruments. The E2 has a choice of smooth and trigger hold. If you want to add motion to your parts don't forget the modulation. The E2 is a real instrument on which you can develop a personal style.
Yeah, I feel like Korg does motion recording a bit better than others because of the smooth or trigger hold option. I especially appreciated as a per part setting on the E2. Have you tried any elektron stuff? I can't wait to try the Drumlogue to see how they have implemented motion recording! I'm a big fan of Korg over all!
@@MyLittleSynths Yes I purchased a piece of Elektron kit and returned it because it doesn't match my work flow. I have all of the Electribes the E2 is my favorite. (I use 3 in my current setup) My favorite drum machine is the Roland TR-8s. I use a lot of percussion and not really interested in drum kits. I put my money efx's not new gear, the right efx can make just about any gear sound good.
Rare to meet someone that prefers the E2 over the emx/esx! But I agree, E2 with hacktribe OS is my desert island piece! Even though I experience a lot of noise on the E2 audio outs. I often get around this by exporting clips/stems to sd card. Do your E2's have noisy outputs, and if so, how do you deal with it? I also have the tr8s, but honestly, I prefer the E2 for drums. Groove templates, MANY recordable peramiters vs the rolands 3 per part. But I will admit the roland has a superior sound engine.
@@MyLittleSynths I have literally read every comment on the Korg forum watched the better TH-cam reviews and can't recall this mentioned. I have 3 E2' with no noise issues.
Interesting, I suspect it's from the lights in the pads. Changing to say the stepjump control or something that doesn't flash seems to reduce the noise. Early on, I remember reading a combination of batteries and power saver off or something cleaned it up. I can't remember exactly. Do you commonly use the main outs or the headphone output? And batteries or AC power?
The E2 is not a drum machine.
I get it, not exactly a fair comparison, but I use E2 for drums alot. With no sustain envalope, it deffinently feels like a drum machine! If you have spent alot of time on the ER-1, the E2 feels like the same TYPE of drum machine. Also, E2 is so much fun for techno!
@@MyLittleSynths I get the point, 90% of my drums come from the E2 but when I search for drum machines I always have to wade through mostly groove boxes. My TR8s now has a lot of sounds other than percussion, still I wouldn't call it a groove box. I really line the Volca drum but mine stopped working after minimal use I have a lot of Korg kit and the Volca is the only piece to stop. Have you had any problems with yours?
I agree! TR8s is not very good as a groove box. Volca drum even has the pitch quantizer! I'm sorry to hear about your volca drum. I don't think I have had any problems. I deffinently pushed it to its limits and was able to overload the midi a few times. But it's super rare for it to act up and always snaps back after a power cycle. What is yours doing? Maybe try updating the firmware?
I have a question. Can korg sq 1 tweak each note with +/- 5v instead of half tone like the real korg sq-10? I can't find info about it, thanks so much for the video
Not sure if I understand the question 100%, but if you look at the grey text on the machine, that's the shift functions. It can do 1v, 2v, or 5v ranges. So I'd say yes.
@@MyLittleSynths Sorry maybe i did not explain properly. What i'm trying to say is in korg sq 10 when you are tweaking knows of each step, you can set the note slighly detuned of C for example or set it beetween C and C# (quarter tone). It is possible to do that in the korg SQ-1? Thanks so much
@@MyLittleSynths This is an example where you can see how works sq-10 tunning each step th-cam.com/video/frNRNlPE8Fs/w-d-xo.html
Very interesting, mid gate tweaking, almost like a slide or gluide. I will have to try this out. I'm almost 100% it won't work with midi, but I will try using CV and report back. I don't have a ms20 or any Hz/V gearz so cant test that one. I assume you saw this video, th-cam.com/video/F5Pb3OK2X4A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0ce4nWSkuIWmlFRY
Yes, you can with cv, get out of tune or chromatic scale, especially if you use the 1v range! Canot do this with midi. But I have a trick to get out side of traditional tunning on most synths. It will be in my next 'Tribe Tips' video!
@#$%£√π÷§
Thank you for posting this! ELECTRIBE 3 WOULD BE A DREAM!!! LISTEN UP KORG!!! THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN!!!
So inspiring <3
In my opinion, motion recording is the defining feature of the electribe line!
I think Volca Drum could win in a price range/functions ratio
I agree! It's deffinently an evolution of the ER-1. I just wish it wasn't volca sized!!
Keep these up man, great work. I got my first musical gear as an adult around when you started this channel, probably shortly afterwards. I've since realized I'm far less capable and knowledgeable than I thought, now I'm refocused on easy mode presets I can sit down and play easily. For me that's a Korg SQ-64 as a sequencer for a 1010 Razzmatazz and MicroFreak (they each have their own but I couldn't figure them out and got a great used deal on SQ64). I probably should have started and focused solely on a MiniFreak or Hydrasynth Explorer, but for now I'm using these to learn and get music going faster for me without a computer.
Well, I'm glad you didn't give up when it got difficult. I have heard such contrasting opinions on the sq-64 that I'm very interested to try it! I love the physical form factor of it. Sounds like the sq-64 has made the music fun for you, and that's the most important! Microfreak has been on my want list for the longest, and all the 1010 stuff is cool. I got the chance to try the black and blue box. I actually started with a dedicated sequencer as well. Much easier to learn one sequencer and apply it to multiple machines than to try and learn 3 different sequencers.
I think the best budget drum solution is the korg volca sample 2, especially if you use an external sequencer.
Hmmm, I do love the volca sample! It actually is featured in my zine of favorite drum machines, where the E2 and volca drum are not! But are you synthisizing the kicks in the sample or simply loading them up? 🤔
Finally! The ER1mk2!Among the ERs there is a difference too, between mk1 and mk2.. I prefer the features and all metallic look of the mk2.
I absolutely love the metal faceplate of the MK2 tribes! And yes, I didn't go into it much in this video, but mk1 is voice 1 and 2 ring modulation, whereas mk2 has cross modulation. I find cross modulation way better for percusion, but it feels like you essentially lose a voice when using this feature, difficult choice when you only have 4 to start with.
BTW....We have the tribe2...TR6s....mbrut Impact ....each has its place and vibe....YOU ROCK!!
Lovely set up! I'd suggest diving into synthisizing drums on the E2 rather than using the pcm samples. Then, sample or export the sounds and use them in the tr-6s👌. This comparison really shocked me what the E2 was capable of as a synth. I will be crafting some drum packs soon, I might share them, but I will deffinently be using them in upcoming videos and jams.
@@MyLittleSynths Thanks for the tech advice and GREAT CHANNEL!!!!!! ❤️.
GREAT Comparison....head to head Showdown!!!!...Not dry ....nor lackluster!!!.....PERFECT for those on the fence looking for Demos......Great Demo!!! 😊
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. Very nice collection of drum machines you go there. I love percusive sounds so I can never have enough drum machines!
@@MyLittleSynths EXACTLY!!!!!!!
Wanted the ER1 and the others , back in the 90s, but couldn't afford them. Nearly bought the Electribe 2(s) when they came out but got distracted by other gear. Finally came back to Korg when the volcas came out and I have the FM;Drum;Keys and Modular. The ER1 ,though limited, is the best of the 3 although I love my Volca Drum. Have also had several Kaoss pads and now I only have the KP1.
I'm definitely a big korg fan boy. All 3 machines are special, but seeing how the ER-1 is currently the most expensive, I'd say the common opinion agrees with you. Though it could be a rarity thing due to being so far out of production. ER-1 is deffinently the most hands on 'instrument', where the other 2 feel more like tools. Even though the ER-1 has a special charm, the single motion recording per part always gets in my way.
Its sad that the head engineer @ korg (i dont remember his name cuz im a jackass) that worked on the e2 project took so much criticism for something that brings so much joy into peoples lives! although i understand being upset over not including the sample function on the synth version. i beleive that e2 lovers should start a genre of minimal electronic music performed live named after and dedicated to that specific engineer @ korg.
I agree! There is Tribcore, not sure if it's named after the elecTRIBE or a tribal version of hardtek, but it's very popular on electribes. Those guys don't seem to have any problem with the E2 vs emx/esx. Almost 10 years now still my favorite machine!
The electribe 2 takes years to get comfortable with but is deceptively deep/rewarding over time. When you get tired of it as a groovebox use it as a synth/sound source, an fx unit or just a programmable drum machine. Im using one of the quarter inch outs to go into a universal audio astra pedal (but the behringer bi-phase would be super dope to pair it with too). i make sequences then sample them into edison. The electribe 2 seems to pair well with every sampler on the planet ASIDE FROM the electribe 2 sampler which always seemed to be missing something although its essentially the same controls and fx as the synth version. I bought and sold an electribe 2 synth version in 2016 only to rebuy a mislabled unit off of amazon for 150$ and years later its the only piece of gear im afraid to sell cuz its much more inspiring and fun than any daw could ever be. Even the voice stealing/dropping limitations can create happy accidents. A midi controller like the keystep really opens the e2 up and makes the experience alot more "free range". Overall the e2 is an educational tool/knob per function/and kinda sound design gateway drug LOL for people who love electronic music but dont understand the basic elements that build and shape electronic music. It really breaks down the basic components of electronic music by putting them right in front of you osc/filter/modulation/ampEG section is kinda weak but usuable and fx. Its like the electribe 2 is an electronic sensei that says "No child! Less is more! Get back to basics and keep it simple!". I know how cliche that sounds but i came to electronic music from the perspective of a guitar player and was completely overwhelmed and discouraged by all the features and functions of a daw. The e2 gives you somewhere to start on your electronic music journey its shallow enough for a begginer to have fun but you can also spend 45 minutes tweaking/tuning a kick drum LOL.
C'est pas la sampler
I have the Hacktribe os installed. So, best of both sampler and synth versions! 😊
The great things about the SQ-1 are it´s simplicity, and it´s versitality. I much prefer it over the Mother-32 (a.k.a. Crave) sequencer, which is pure hell to control.
Have not used the mother-32 sequencer. But I do think alot of the magic of the DFAM/edge comes from the 8 steps firing a gate each step it takes. That repetitive nature makes it hypnotic. Obviously 1 to 16 steps with gates is far mor versatile. I'd imagine sq-1 + Crave is a nice combination. Can you run the Crave sequencer and the sq-1 to create shifting patterns? I need to do a video on using 2 separate sequences to pitch on one synth.
Ha ha where's Jeremy beadle 😅
misleading thumbnail
Yeah, little bit. Wanted to try something different. All my thumbnails were starting to look the same. 🤷♂️
kind of like a drone technique. but a one shot
Yes, very much a drone, but sometimes modulating the amp or volume with the lfo or retrigering the envelope like a looped envelope.
Great idea. This is such a fun way to create improvised music in the moment. By the way, I would definitely enjoy a video of you diving into the mono station. I really like your slow and careful approach to sound design. I learn a lot from this. Edit:subscribed!
Good stuff.
Thanks 😊

I have heard the Lemondrop is a magical little thing. Would love to get my hands on one! I want to get in the habit of doing these everyday. 100% feels like a form of meditation. Each tweak you listen to the change and that guides the next move. Hard to think of your problems and stress when your stuck in a shifting sonic structure.
@@MyLittleSynths Exactly..... Perfectly said.
I enjoyed this method. Also, if you sidechained the output to a rumbly kick, you definitely could get some meditative style of techno, reminiscent of old Plastikman.
Hey! Thank you so much for giving me a shout out; I appreciate you always! Also, this is very nice. I guess I assumed that Scale Mode will only augment incoming MIDI signals, and I didn't know that changing the global scale with Mode on would conform existing notes to the new scale. Really great technique, thank you!
Yes! It's an odd an useful little machine. You would think the scale and key quantizer would be up at the control layer, but it's straddling between the sequencer layer and the synth engine. I will likely do another "tribe tips" video showing this, but it will in real time quantize incoming midi and then output it. Meaning if you hook up a midi keyboard and an external synth the E2 can be used as a midi quantizer! And even more strange if you record you're playing, it will record the actual notes you play, but you will only hear and transmit notes in key and scale!
My daughter wants to share a couple of Your Tutorials....is that cool with You?
Yeah, that's cool. Go for it!
