Benchmade Foray Tuneup
มุมมอง 4957 ปีที่แล้ว
I purchased this Foray from field and stream today on the cheap. Since I am going to make it an everyday carry I decided to tune it up and put a high angle edge on it. I was concerned that since I put a 40-degree inclusive angle on it with a 45-degree micro bevel that it might feel dull. I mirrored the edge and stropped it a bit. It doesn't seem to be a problem. I polished the washers to 10K gr...

    You know.........Some wooden paint stirring sticks cut to size, a glue stick, and a piece of non corrugated cardboard will absolutely do the exact same thing...............

  • @BennyCFD
    @BennyCFD ปีที่แล้ว

    Why............................A piece of flat non corrugated cardboard even with no stropping works every bit as well as a leather strop. Use a few times, throw it away. No maintenance.

    Hi, The angled guide rod make the convex edge by it self, you do not need foam. It works better, and with higher precision with a normal diamond sharpener. If you use a 6 mm thick sharpener the protractir shows the correct degrees when you have 28 cm between the cutting edge and the pivot point. This means that you adjust Chef for different blade width. For eveey thumb you use on the sharpener length you get 1 degree sphere = 3 thumb length give 3 degrees convex sphere. Thomas

    How do you compare the Edgepal Chef to the TSPROF KO2?

    • @j.brianmoses18
      @j.brianmoses18 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The edge pal chef was my favorite sharpener until I got the TSProf. The ability to flip the blade without removing it from the clamps makes the TSProf the better sharpener, but only just. They are both very accurate and you can’t go wrong with either.

  • @SAVY_JAX
    @SAVY_JAX 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You roll your blade tip off the edge really hard. That’s going to ruin your tip over time. Also, blade with large belly like that really need to be rolled away from the stone as you go around or you’ll end up with a thickened blade tip and shortened blade.

  • @szilardfineascovasa6144
    @szilardfineascovasa6144 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a long-winded observation 🙂: the bent rod is for convexing; it will work by itself, making the foam-backed sandpaper redundant. If anything, the give in the sharpener will, first, go against your ability to control the degrees of the convexing precisely (if you care about it), as well as force you to go in a single direction when sharpening, instead of back and forth. With a stone, you wouldn't worry about accidentally cutting the sandpaper (and, of course, ruining your edge in the process). Still, some stop-collars may save even your sandpaper and your edge you worked hard for, methinks.

    Why aren’t you using the flat edge at the beginning? Do you use the triangle tip just to repair the edge before sharpening?

    • @egger46
      @egger46 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a video manual for the sharpener and it says to begin with the pointed edge then move to the flat side. Starting with the gray coarse stones and working your way up to the fine white ones.

    • @henkdaaps7562
      @henkdaaps7562 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess the reason for using the triangle tip is to smoothen out damaged parts of the edge but otherwise I don’t think I would use the tip. Only the flat sides for V edges and the tip only for serrated knives.

    Thanks for the video. You mentioned that you can fit different size stones. But are you tied to proprietary stones that are made by or for TSPROF only? If not, do you know what other stone manufactures stones you can go with?

    • @j.brianmoses18

      I use stones made for the edge pro. They are the same size. But other sizes will fit.

    • @vtxdaryl
      @vtxdaryl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use the 6” stones or even 4” KME stones but they would defeat the purpose of this sharpener.

    It's my understanding that the guide bar and the stone surface need to be squared. The surface and the side of the stone squareness is irrelevant. When you use the stone truing tool the diamond cuts the stone to be parallel to the guide bar.

    Thanks for the video I have a blur and just bought it and the sharpmaker I got the uf stone's separate but not the diamond ones should I use the 30 degree like u or use just the 40? Also being it has that slight recurve should I use the flat part of the stones and the edge part or only one or the other??? I'm a complete novice when it comes to sharpening. Also not sure if it matters but my blur is the s30v veraion.

      use the corners, you can use the flats but it takes a different technique, if your a beginner, use the corners, sv30 is a harder steel, it may just take longer to get a good edge

      Have a look for Aluminum Oxyde color pigment. Last resort will be Aluminum Oxyde green oil color for artists, matte. The color might not provide the defined 3 um particles good green compound is made of, the grit may differ up to 5 - 7 um, but it is allways better than not stroping. It will give you a decent polish.

      Chrome polish. In the U.S. it is sold under the name Simichrome Polish. Any metal polishing compound would work, but you will get better results with dedicated aluminum oxide, chromium oxide, or diamond emulsion compounds.
