Counting NFC Tag Scans (and more) with this 60-Second Hack!
Let us learn how to enable NFC tags to track the number of times they were scanned. This is achieved through a feature known as _counter mirroring_ available on NTAG 21x Series NFC ICs, including NTAG 213, 215, and 216. NTAG 21x-based NFC tags are widely available online, including on Amazon. You will need an Android phone with NFC capability. The iPhone version of the required app, NFC TagWriter by NXP, does not currently support the counter mirroring feature.

Awesome thank you
good information, but where did you get the custom card with your name?
I just printed "Sudo Scientific" on a card with a plotter and a gel pen, but if you want to do the same in a more professional fashion, I'm sure there are many different services that allow you to do so! -D
So will I need a VCard for the contact information to pop up a IPhone ? I saw a guy in another video doing something similar however he added a vCard link and it worked ?
I don't believe you need to write your contact information in a VCard format, although I'm sure it will work both ways! -D
Wow i can't thank you enough for such an in depth explanation! I know notjinf about technology and i think i can do it myself easily now. Appreciate your video
I'm glad we could help! -D
Why don’t you have your own NFC card business? Also, if I want to make my own NFC card business, how can I sell the cards with a link for them to edit their own information?
An NFC card business has a lot more aspects to it than a TH-cam channel, so we'll probably be sticking to content creation for now, haha~ If you wanted to sell cards with a link to edit their own information, perhaps you could link the cards to a website you made with detailed information on how to change it! -D
@@SudoScientific bet. Thank you for hitting back. Very much appreciated
Great video - I also feel like I'm having a jazzy birthday!
damn good video i thought you guys were famous before i saw the view count dont give up and strive higher
Aww, thanks so much! That means a lot! -D
I need to talk to you, personally
How can the recipient have the option to save my information once I tap my card on his or her device?
If you link the card to a website (like shown in the video), then the recipient can just bookmark the website and copy the information down later. Or, on certain websites (dot.cards), there is an automatic save contact info feature. You can also directly write contact info into an NFC tag as an NDEF contact record, which a few NFC writing apps have, and the recipient should be able to save that info. Hope that helps! -D
Thank You
You are very welcome! -D
Great video!! Thanks for sharing!! 😄
Thank you for watching! -D
I got nfc ntag216 888kb storage, unfortunately it's not working on iPhone I used nxp writer to write url in samsung galaxy s21 fe it's working fine on it but on its not iPhone working I tired 7, 12 and 14 pro. Plz help. Should I return the tag, or is there a way to make them work.
NTAG 216s should be able to work…if you only need to write to your NFC tags once, maybe just using your Samsung Galaxy could work? Or if you want it to work on iPhones, you can try using a different app, such as NFC Tools on iPhones (although this is a paid app). Let me know if any of those solutions work out! -D
@@SudoScientific Bro, I tried but I think there was some problem with them, about being ndef, so returned it and bought a ntag215 from Amazon and they are working fine. I have written two links to the new cards 1 from of the unitlink profile and the other from the Canva project which contains my original card design and it works like a charm. Thank you for the reply.
That's great to hear! Happy to help! -D
So we have a medical center and we want to have our receptionists take reviews from the patients , and we want to know how many reviews/taps every receptionist did, I've searched a lot for a method to count how many taps were done through the NFC tags, till i found your video , thank you very much that was really helpful!
Whoa, glad it helped with something so important! -D
The ready to scan/write pop up doesn’t pop up on mine, do you know what might be going on or what I need to do?
If it doesn’t show up at first after you click “save and write” twice, try clicking “click here to write tag” in the center of the screen, and the pop-up should appear. Let me know if that helps! -D
😢you just don’t know how much you made my night with this valuable information. You are the GOAT
Aww, thanks! I appreciate you! -D
Good video
Thank you for watching! -D
Hey can you make a video on how to make an expiring tag
It might not be possible to make the tag itself expire, but an easy way to do that is to use a URL redirecting service (like bit.ly or tinyurl.com), connect that link to the tag, and delete the link after your desired period of time so the tag doesn't direct to anything anymore. Hope that helps! -D
Love your work!
Thank you so much! -D
bro i need that shirt where is merch link
Ha! Maybe coming soon? We'll see! -D
But it's 5 minutes long :o
Is this good for Google reviews?
If I'm understanding your question correctly, yes, you can have your NFC tag direct to almost any link, including a reviews page! If you meant to ask something else, feel free to clarify, and I'll get back to you! -D
@@SudoScientific I second, it is possible for reviews and even more attractive to customers
Thank you for revealing this trick. Great presentation. ♠♥♦♣

How I can print the cards, or add a design on the cards? thanks
Good question! There are a few options. (1) You can buy inkjet printable NFC cards (from Amazon or other places) if you have a compatible inkjet printer with card holding tray. (2) You can use a plotter with a Sharpie to draw your design. I used a Silhouette cutting machine with a pen holder (similar to a plotter) to write on the black NFC card in the video with a gel pen. (3) You can also use a laser engraver to burn your design on a light color card. -D
Thank you, I have a inkjet printer and I have a plotter too@@SudoScientific

Yay! Thank you! -D
Thanks Bro great vid
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed. -D
I think if you show it to someone they next want to try to do the choosing from the 5 stack. In that case I don't think it's 'decodeable' with the remaining 4 cards. At least not without playing with extra positioning like putting a little bit higher/lower, etc.
You're right, the trick would sometimes be impossible if the person you show it to decides to choose the fifth card for you. But as long as you get to choose which card to keep and which cards to place, it'll work perfectly. Good observation, though; I wonder if there's a way to modify the trick so other people can choose the card and you can still make it work...maybe that's the subject for a future video, haha~ -D
@@SudoScientific hey, I came up with a way to make it work if someone wants to choose the hidden card, but for that to happen, one more card is needed in the trick. To do this, consider that Clubs are the opposite of Hearts, and Spades are the opposite of Diamonds. If the first card you put down is the lowest or only card in that suit, whoever is decoding must switch to the opposite suit. After this, there are 4 cards left: If the second card you choose is the lowest, the suit remains as it is, and you add the other 3 cards as in the original trick. If the second card chosen is the second lowest, the suit remains but you subtract the remaining 3 cards (same as in the original) If the second card chosen is the third lowest, you add it but change it to the other suit of the same color. If it is the highest, you subtract it and change to the suit of the same color. Example: 2D, 2S, 8S, 8C, QD and the hidden card is the 7H. The order could be: 8C 2S 2D 8S QD The 8C is the lowest of its suit, so you should switch to Hearts. 2S is the second lowest, so it keeps the suit and subtract the last 3. The last 3 are Small Medium Large = 1 (subtract 1 and it becomes 7H). This method allows multiple orders for the same result, in this case it would also be possible for the order to be 2S 8S QD 2D 8C 2S is the lowest of its suit, so switch to Diamonds. 8S is the third lowest, so switch to the suit of same color (Hearts) and add the last 3. The last 3 are Large Small Medium = 5, add 5 to 2. 7H.
Nice! Your system seems to work flawlessly, and I think it's really clever! I was thinking as well; a simpler solution (to explain, definitely way harder to use in practice) is to assign every permutation of the 5 cards (differentiated by size) to a different card in the deck. With this solution, you could even go up to a deck of 125 unique cards-there are 5! = 120 permutations, and the guesser could eliminate the five cards they were shown. You'd have to find a nice way to memorize every permutation, though. I definitely like your solution better in some aspects. -D
@@SudoScientific Nice! I didn't think about the possibility of representing the card whitout relating it to the other 5's. Sure, a nice way would be to use the first card to represent the suit. Lowest = clubs ..... Then the other 4 to represent the number!
For future pt.2 and pt.3 or more, it would have been nice to have more background on the reason I clicked on the video which was to see an interesting card trick and the twist on it, since this is the first video I watched as it simply showed up in the feed and I didn't come from the first. Maybe show the card trick again at the beginning and then show your change to it. Take this however you want, I just noticed you have a small/new channel and would give an honest opinion, I think you guys have a lot of potential.
Agree, got this video in the feed, around 2 minutes in I realized there is a prerequisite video. After watching that, it's indeed a cool a trick.
Great idea. We'll be sure to give more background in future extension videos! -D
im getting TED-ED riddle vibes 😌✨
That's what I was going for! -D
Woah 😮, new Darren video!!!
thank you for the code 🙏🙏🙏🙏 i hav no friends so the code was very helpful 🤩‼️🫡
litearlly shaking and crying rn tooo esay!!
Sounds like we need to make a part 3, haha~ -D
Wich phone can i do this ? Iphone 8 plus is okay for this ? Or no
Yes, iPhone 8 Plus is NFC enabled. All iPhones released since the iPhone 6 in 2014 have a NFC chip. However, NFC on iPhone 6 is limited to payments via Apple Pay. iPhone 7 and newer can read typical NFC tags. -D
It seems like I don’t even have 5% of your brain power.
Haha, thanks! -D
When i try to scan mine it does not scan I doesn’t come up only in shortcuts it comes up
My guess is that the information you wrote to the NFC tag is incomplete to trigger an action in background tag reading. For instance, I have seen people writing URLs to their tags without the '' prefix. In that case, the tag can still trigger an automation in the Shortcuts, since a Shortcuts automation is triggered by the unique UID of the tag, but not its contents. I hope this helps! -D
OMG! Solving the Dirty Dozen with Burr Tools is really impressive. I, for one, want to see an in-depth tutorial on Burr Tools. Thank you!

Can someone else overwrite my NFC tag or is it password secure?
If you add a password to your NFC tag, nobody can overwrite it without first unlocking the password. You can also lock your tag (Under the "Other" tab in NFC tools) to make the info on it unchangable forever. Hope this helps! -D
Thanks
Amazing video. And loved the ex girlfriend revenge example 😂😂😂
Ha! Thanks so much! -D
This video cured my cancer!!!
Wow, Thank you sir!!!
I had no idea NFC tags could be so versatile! Thanks for explaining how they work. This opens up so many possibilities!
Of course. Thanks for watching! -D
wow! sooooooo cool
Thank you for this video! Very helpful!
No problem! Thanks for watching! -D
If we prepare this card for another person, how can that person change his information?
That person should be able to wipe the NFC tag using "Format memory" in the "Other" section of NFC Tools, and add their new information using the same steps in this video. Hope this helps! -D
@@SudoScientific Can't edit your information online without using the application? Because some service providers of this card send a link to the email and the person can edit his information
I think you should be able to edit your information through that link on any online browser, without using an app. Tell me if this helps! -D
