Aviary update: asking for ideas for 2023
Who cleans the aviary? Birds are notoriously messy and they poop constantly. Do you have a rain system that cleans the foliage and drains in the floor? I had a 20 by 16 aviary that was quite successful. I sold my baby birds to a local pet shop that specialized in birds. I liked breeding but the amount of time and cleaning was demanding. I eventually sold all my birds. I miss the thrill of watching them but not the time involved in it.
You are right about the mess and yes, I clean it. There is a video somewhere showing how, but basically I grab a beer and a hose and get to it. yes there is a drain
Don't you just love wonderful surprises.....🎉 Fingers crossed 2025 will be an amazing year for you and your birds....🙏
wonderful surprises- yes! Happy New Year to you too Doug!
Always an adventure waiting around the corner.
always… 🤣
Happy New Year and a Healthy one for you and family Amen 🙏
you too Papi!
Oh, what a fun surprise! Interesting that breeding has begun before conditioning with live food. It’s rather a fine line tho, isn’t it? I’m sure YOU plan for some “down time” to allow birds to recover from breeding…..but Nature…..she has other plans now and then! Get those worms!❤️
This was really a surprise, I have not encouraged any breeding for a year just because I don’t have room. I did recently start up my stream again- I wonder if the running water was a trigger or maybe more humidity in the air (and wet winter) means rainy season came early to them?
Where are your other finches like strawberry lavender corden blue olive finch etc
my grey-headed olive back passed away years ago along with several other birds when I got mice in the aviary. horrible day. All of the other species have gone to breeders who really want to focus on them.
Woohoooo go 2025! 😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉
I guess so 🤪
Just shows you cannot stop bird's in great condition to stop breeding They will attempt to use anything My Yellow Wing Pytilla have eggs on the floor and used newspaper from the floor covering Everything else was removed a few months ago Austerity diet used as well Can't hold them back
Ha- You are so right!
Happy New Year to you and yours birds!
Mahalo! Same to you!
Hello there from las Vegas NV USA
So in love with this tiny little SweeWaxbills. I am always looking at my Estrilded-book, special at these birds. It might be very difficult to get them here in Europe. All the best in 2025 for you and your birdsfamily. And enjoy the holidayseason .Kristin
thank you so much Kristin- and happy holidays to you and yours! Mine were imported from Europe so keep your eyes open!!
@@Echosaviary Aha, I see hopeful. Is it possible, you have found them in Belgium?
This is such an exciting video, I'm so happy that you were able to bring in more of the Green Twinspots and now the Swees! The Swee waxbills have a reputation for being very hard to keep in captivity and I personally have seen them fail under what I thought were perfect conditions and care...do you know the reasons for why they tend to fail? They look so strong in your setting, but I know there can be issues... Lainey
Thank you Lainey, I feel very lucky! Yes the Swee are also known for being hard to keep, I can not speak from personal experience with them, but as I mentioned in the video, at the very least, they have a specialized diet so that may be a factor.
@@Echosaviary Yes I have read that there may be something special in their diet that is hard to provide in captivity - are you thinking it involves certain small seeds? Which small seeds are you feeding? It would be so exciting if we could figure out what they need!
Was hoping for a Holiday video from you. Sorry to hear about the storm, 6 days....yikes. Congratulations on the new additions!!!! Very exciting....I briefly thought about the Green Twinspots, they are on my wishlist, but alais, I have Yellow Faced Stars.... Here's wishing you a Happy New Year, and a wonderful year ahead of you....
Thanks Doug- here’s hoping for a quiet finish to winter for both of us!
So amazing! 😊😊😊😊
super lucky right?!?
Thank you for the update. Very interesting as usual. I pray God blesses you in the New Year.
Thank you for the good wishes!
You will definitely breed the Swees.
I am soooo lucky to get a chance to work with them, can hardly believe it after all these years.
Hello Miss Ann! Happy Holidays! Melekalikimaka from Hawaii
Mahalo! and Happy New year!
You really have a beautiful bird collection with very special species. And the Swee Waxbills are so beautiful and I hope the breeding will be successful with them. Happy holidays!
Thank you Robert- cheers to a great 2025 for you!
Is that stone made of cement or is it a real natural stone....? The stone is really beautiful.
That is actually a kind of epoxy, there is a playlist showing how I make rocks (and tree trunks etc)
Very beautiful Aviari, would like to have an Aviari as beautiful as that... Greetings from Indonesia..
Thank you- thats very kind of you!
❤❤❤❤
Look beautiful good luck
Thank you- thats very kind of you to take the time to check in!
6:42 ¿qué es lo que hay en el plato grande?
in the bigger round dish are wingless fruitflies floating in water (so they don’t get away)
@@Echosaviary Gracias por responder. ¿las moscas de la fruta sin alas como las consigues? ¿las venden sin alas?
Yes, they are sold in US primarily for reptile keepers. They are not actually wingless, but that is what they are called. Flightless is a more accurate term. Birds like to eat larvae and adults.
@@Echosaviary Muchas gracias, eres muy amable. Saludos
Uno de mis pájaros favoritos. Los tuve hace muchos años, en los 80 pero no llegué a criar con ellos.
They are very cheerful to have in the aviary and so beautiful!
My white worm culture is working well too! Yay!
well done to keep experimenting to find what works for your birds!
That game is called beat the bugs lol
I freely admit that I cheat at this game to make sure I win 😁
Thanks so much for supporting my music! ♥
Thank you too!
What kind of bugs are in the cups?
those are melanogaster flightless fruitflies. All time favorites of most of my birds. much more so than hydei for some reason (although I know you have great luck with them)
What did you add to the pinkies? Eggfood or cornmeal?
thats just eggfood that I added them to
👍🏻👍🏻‼️
Great information ‼️

Excellent ‼️
Thank for the intro video. Starting my research and generally stick to one or two channels only during my research. As to not get polluted.
I am honored to be one of your research channels!
Hello, Thanks for sharing. I’m a finches lover in California . I would like to purchase some twinspot finches. Do you have some for sale or could you please refer me to a good breeder? Thank you tn
you can try avianexpress.net or newyorkbird supply. they have some imported twinspots of several kinds- do your research before you buy!!
Fantastic setup and plenty of interesting facts Keep it going
thank you!
Hi where's a good source to buy these seeds? Thanks
My baby finch is about 13 days how frequent should i feed it now
thats wonderful- good job!! Simplest answer is to watch the crop and feed when it empties.
What is a great finch that will go great outside that loves little flys. I have a ton in my outdoor aviary and I feel like they would love them
if melanogaster fruitflies, almost any waxbill would be happy. if hydei, then larger finches. if musca domestica (miniature house fly)- I don’t know any finch that would eat adult flies, but if they can get to larvae- almost any will eat happily. Some species are more insectivorous than others, may also consider softbills. Also check temperatures against native temp range for the species and check temperament mix with the birds you already keep.
Been having issues with my zebra finches raising their babies. They've gotten them to the 10-20 day mark then they somehow after two attempts kick their babies out and they pass away by morning. I have an outside avery we are in the warmer months this particular pair keep building their own nest rather than fill the premade ones I've given them and their babies have fallen out before they were really ready. Should I remove the pair into a smaller cage with their eggs and try that way or wait until their eggs hatch and take the babies to raise myself? I'm trying to figure out why they aren't succeeding. I've had two 2 week olds pass and 3 less then two weeks old all kicked out of their nest. I try not to touch their nest too much but the last lot I had to put them back in their nest several times in one day only for them to both pass away in their nest by morning and their dad was in the next with them. I don't want to stress the parents too much either. Wondering what your tips would be and if I should separate that pair and put them in a smaller cage inside until they raise their babies?
Thank you for the detailed information, it is hard to answer definitively but here are my thoughts. 1) no pair of any finch species should be allowed to try to breed more than 3 clutches per year regardless of whether successful or not. I think you have had two failed clutches and if so can try one more time then separate the pair and let them rest till next year. 2) when parents stop feeding that late in the process, typically there is something wrong with chicks (disease process, crop failure of some sort) or something bothering parents (lack of privacy, too much animal protein that is triggering another breeding cycle, parents young or not suitable temperament…) 3) at that age, crop should be full of seeds, weight should be good, feather development should look good. 4) if one parent is a problem, with zebras you can often remove that bird out of hearing of the other and let other parent finish raising. 5) if you can intervene when chicks are still strong enough to beg, then hand feeding chicks after 10 days old is a lot easier than pulling eggs or young chicks. If chicks are too old, then they may not beg to you and force feeding is tricky. 6) inspect dead or dying chicks and see if there any any clues. is crop full or empty, is weight good or skinny, is skin red and dehydrated, is belly distended with intestines visible, is there diahhrhea …. 7) If it were me, I would bot allow another clutch. I would separate male and female and observe them, the. treat them with a decent antiprotozoan and anti-coccidial. then let them rest and be sure they are healthy before allowing to try again possibly with a different partner. good luck and again, this is all general advice
What's the bark covering? Can you send me a link where to buy it please? Getting caught up. :)-
It is coconut bark. I think called reptilechip. comes in a compressed brick. can get on amazon
I have a huge outdoor aviary with real plants and a water feature. I love it, but it is hard to maintain the temperature in the winter. I am amazed with your aviary. How did you make the fake plants attached to the rocks? And how did you make the rocks. Also do you have a water feature or do you just fill up trays for them. Also the fake trees are insane. How how did you do that
Many years ago, I kept live plants and finches, for me, many advantages to fake. there are videos answering all your questions. check out the epoxy playlist, and I think that will answer everything.
How to you make sure the edges aren’t too sharp?
dremel tool or file. both are tedious. also cut the bars at an angle using the horizontal wire as a guide so that cut bar tapers toward the horizontal bar. that leaves very little to know pokey edges
Please tell me, is it normal LED light in your aviary with timer or did you use special bird lamps with UV? And the trees. Are they also made with epoxy? How do you color them brown? Thank you very much😊
I used to have normal shop lights and recently changed over to Luminize jungle dawn LED with UV.
yep. there is a video showing making that tree. epoxy over scrap pvc pipe. yep. just spray painted
Aha, I see. Thank you for your fast infos. Can you tell me the titel of this video with the trees, please? Thank you so much. Kristin 🙂@@Echosaviary
it`s ok, yet I have found it. A tree with a view. Thank you, it is so informativly.
Thank you so much, I like it very well. Everytime I watch one of your videos I learn so much about finchkeeping.😊
Happy to hear that! Thanks for letting me know 😁
