It’s really even more irritating with a dog barking!
That was a lot of work for one fan. I have always wanted to learn how to make lace but never had the chance to learn. I am happy that you are sharing your knowledge and so detailed in the process. Thank you and I will keep watching.
It's really irritating not to be able to see your hands!
Please film so we can see the bobbins!
I’m sorry but I no longer have any filming equipment these vids were done 4 years ago. I am sorry
I found this video quite helpful, thank you for posting
Thank you, very instructive video.
I don't have monofiliment or crimp beads, so I've used beading thread ran through 2 to 3 times through all beads, then knotting half way down each side from the bobbin. We shall see how long it lasts. lol.
That is how I used to do mine. I think it depends how you handle the bobbins. I know when I am at full speed I can jolt them a lot
@@thelaceowl4178 Eventually I will buy larger bobbins to spangle and spangle with wire, but I ended up getting "travel length" bobbins instead of the ones I ordered. I will try these out for a bit, then gradually replace them. I love your tutorials. Hopefully get the same books so I can play catch up on your vids with the correct patterns.
This was very useful but I wonder if you meant to stop coming back through one at the edge. You did it for the first few and mentioned the green would stay at the edge but then you changed method. Could you explain about this please.
I always go one way through the edge, but after you have about half the pairs going forwards and back, i.e using a pair of workers, you start getting some rucks in the lace and it starts to look untidy so at that point I just put it back through a couple of pairs to tie it down. Maybe I need to redo that one at some stage and make it clearer.
@@thelaceowl4178 Thank you. The finished result was very neat. I was able to come back through one all the way down as I had fewer pairs.
Beautiful!!
Thank you
I watched this with subtitles switched on. Was shocked to see that the pattern costs £33-50.
The pattern cost £3.50 think the subtitle got it wrong sorry
I wanna see her go full speed, as fast as she can!
Lol and that with the camera on is when I make mistakes!
I love this video for reminding how to do spiders and you explain it so well. Thank you
Thank you. I am so glad it helped
Thanks for the step-by-step demo. I'd love to see close-ups of the final lace as well as the pin diagrams in future videos! It helps me understand it in a different way.
I will remember that on the next one and thanks
That looks like fun
I love Spanish Fans.
I’m not sure if you’ve already produced video for adding thread when bobbin runs out - I’ll look but I’d appreciate seeing your version. Question: is the cross twist direction universally done the same? I swear I’ve seen cross and twist done differently-meaning right to left or left to right? Hope I’m making sense. Really like your tutorials.
Hi Annie. Yes I have done a joining two threads together video this is the url th-cam.com/video/zo9u04O9SVE/w-d-xo.html Ok the time we cross left over right is the first part of every stitch; when we are counting 2 over 3 before we go 2 and 4 over 1 and 3. so that is the left over right. When we are twisting their legs in and out of fans, or when we first start or at the end of a row that is always right over left. Are those maybe the two you are thinking of??
Very nice, thank you!
Glad you like it!
Fabulous- I need a teacher like you. Thank you so much.
Glad the videos help 🙏🏻
Very good video! ThNk you for doing it!
Thank you. Hope it is useful
You need to do a booklet or book to go with you series of stitches! I would definitely buy it! You are great at explaining!
Thank you Mary, not sure if I have a book in me but we will see as we go through some of the other stitches.
Wow. You just reminded me of my former teacher, Ms McPhee. I think that was her name. She started the bobbin lace club in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She translated "the book" from French to english
Thank you <smiles>
Would love to see how you mount on leather!
Hi Mary it’s now on my list to be done. I will use the next bookmark
Hi Sandra, I have Lizabeth size 10, and DMC size 20, can I use those?
Hi I would use the DMC 20, its a little thick for this bookmark but it will make the stitches fine, I would leave the end of the bookmark as a fringe rather than the way I normally show to finish a bookmark
This is so helpful to see the differences up close, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Let me know if there is any other stitches you would like to see. I am about to do cloth stitch diamonds
I love the way you did this! Thank you for posting such clear instructions!
You are so welcome!
I haven’t worked bobbin lace in a year, having to do review a lot. Bought a couple bookmarks that you sold when on Etsy. Can’t wait to do them again. Couldn’t find you on Etsy,
I now have my own shop, starting to put some bookmarks up there and some coaster patterns
@@thelaceowl4178 Do you still ship to USA?
@@marytennessee1844 the bookmarks are now digital downloads but I could cost up a printed copy for you as letter rate is not that expensive
@@thelaceowl4178 Thank you! I did go to your site and got the free one. As soon as I can shake the dust out of my brain on doing lace again, I definitely want to get more of your patterns. You explain so well, I really appreciate you doing videos!
So glad you have done another video! You explain everything so well.
Thank you, more to come hopefully
Thank you so much for showing this at a slower speed. Most do it so fast while holding the bobbins that you can’t see how to really do it.
Thank you I try to demonstrate as slowly as I can. I’m working through the fans at the moment. Today is the turn of a half stitch fan with a foot side edge. Hopefully that will be up by the end of the week
I am absolutely interested in a video showing how to join in threads.
No problem Jackie I will write one and upload it hopefully next week.
Good morning miss Sandra. I am so happy to see you in another video. I am working with another blind lady who has been bobbin lacing since 1976. We just finished working on spiders and I think this fan with scallops is what we're doing next. My roller pillow is on back-order but I'm managing to struggle along with the cookie pillow that came in the kit I bought from Snowgoose Lace. I love working with sine 40/2 linen thread. I'm a thread crocheter so I'm used to the no stretch factor. So far we've done, Princess lace, diamonds, and spiders, and of course wink-a-pin. The size 20 thread that came in with the kit I just added to my tatting thread stash.
It’s great to hear from you. Glad you are doing so well.
Where we get this bobbins
Ebay is a good place to start to get bobbins
@@thelaceowl4178 thanku
Thank you for sharing your expertise! Can you please tell us what size and brand of thread you are using?
Let me check
I used ordinary sewing cotton for this snake
What exactly is the gimp made of? Is it a thicker thread or just another color of the same threads?
A gimp thread is just a thread that is thicker ( usually 2.5 to 3 times thicker) than the rest of the treads
@@thelaceowl4178 Thank you for the clarification1
I’m just getting into bobbin lace. Where did u get ur roller/cube combo pillow? Thanks 😀
If you check the Internet or Ebay you can find stockist. I can only comment on UK. I think I found mine on eBay
Thank u 😀
I first tried lace as a teenager, and I made my own beads out of Polymer clay haha! Today, I dug out my old lace making kit and want to have another go at doing some more lace. I also do lampwork, so I’m looking forward to remaking my spangles with my own glass beads this time!
Lora Ricketts I am a lampworker as well though a better lacemaker. I also now make and design my own bobbins in resin. It is an all encompassing hobby
I’ve got so many crafty hobbies, so it’s nice to be able to combine a couple of them together.
Hello Sandra. I have recently joined a bobbin lace group on facebook and was looking for your group as well. I would love to join. My searches for the lace owl have been in vain. Thank you.
Search for traditional bobbin lace. It’s a bit quiet at the moment
This is so helpful! I just bought my first bobbin lace making tools and am going to start from zero
Have fun!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge teacher. Appreciating this so much!
Thank you for the information I just started bobbin lace and need all the help I can get
Thank you
I love seeing the stitches explained. But, I am interested to know....If you continued with half stitch long enough, would the pairs come back together again as they started?
calcrules yes they do eventually. I think I go through it on one of my videos
good
If your linen starts shredding, dampen it a wee bit, it will bring it back strong (weaver who is just getting into bobbin lace) it is the reason why linen is spun in the damp
Oh! For a visual learner like me, seeing every thread in a different color made this suddenly make so much sense. Thank you ever so much! Question, could I use a similar technique to make the lace tape for battenberg lace?
Siggy's Fascinations as a trial piece of course you can. Not sure tape lace would look good multi coloured but as a test piece yes.
I cannot wait for more videos,
What does one do if a bobbin runs out in the middle of a work?
Whilst there is some left, wind another bobbin, pin it in from the top, sellotape the bobbins together and use the two strands in pattern for as long as you can. Then throw out the ending bobbin
@@thelaceowl4178 show me how to do picot
I have just discovered your videos and I find them extremely useful but I am wondering if you could include what the lace looks like completed (without the pins to obscure the view of the lace)?
Good morning Sandra. Thank you for making such detailed videos. I am a blind crafter. I knit, crochet, and shuttle tat. I hope to add spinning and real lace making. I feel if I had the bobbins and pillow I could follow along with you. Have you ever taught someone who was blind? The card stock used for patterns is thick enough to handle a tracing wheel.. Making the lines raised would be easy to feel. Working with fine threads won't be a problem since the bobbins are what is being handled. I love the thought of spangled bobbins with pretty charms.
ablindgibsongirl if I can I would love to mentor you. I think you can do it, but you would need to be able to identify single bobbins. You could definitely use a tracing wheel on the card to identify each pattern and if you have patterns that have already been pricked then maybe we could work through a pattern
The Lace Owl That sounds lovely. I think your teaching style is perfect. I have been looking at beginner bobbin lace hits, is there a particular brand you recommend?
ablindgibsongirl these are just my thoughts but I think to begin with you need bobbins with different beads on, you would need 10. For pins to begin with I would suggest glass head pins, your tatting thread would be great, and you would need a cookie pillow. I would suggest you buy your bobbins that feel different to you, either the spangles or the bobbins themselves. You will have to identify each bobbin by its feel, your first pattern is just an elongated upside down U so you would need some card, back of a Christmas card, something about that weight
The Lace Owl That all sounds doable. Is there a difference between types of bobbins? I have two balls of size twenty tatting thread, I also have five by seven index cards. I am thinking an eighteen inch pillow is a good size without being too small. Almost there.
I'd have enjoyed it more if you zoomed in more often, but thank you xxx
Thankyou so much for your tutorials they are so helpful xxx
This is so useful and I will now change what I have been doing. I love the macrame method of finishing off.
