Thank you for sharing this video. I grew up in Winklespruit many years ago and thought I would share some history with this sometimes very overlooked but popular vacation resort area with you. It would have been nice if you had walked up to the swimming pool and taken a video of it but more importantly the “little building” on the top of the rocks. This used to be the original “Life Savers” look out view point where they could observe the ocean and swimmers in both directions. The beach itself extends further south to Illovo Beach and as you showed, northwards to Amanzimtoti. The name “Winkle Spruit”originated back in 1875, when the Dutch ship “Tonga” hit the rocks close to the shore and sank. The sailors were able to make it safely to shore and were able to salvage much if the cargo on board. They proceeded to set up a “make ship store” next to the “Lagoon/Spruit (stream) where they proceeded to sell the goods to the locals. The Dutch name Winkle (store) Spruit (stream/lagoon) originated from there, meaning, the store by the lagoon/stream. Part of the ship wreck could be seen for years at low tide. There is (or was) also a stream that ran in the indigenous growth near the railroad which led to WinkleSpruit station. Close to the station was a small shop named “ The Little Store & Tea Room” the owners back in the 1930’s were Mr. & Mrs Lynch who emigrated from Scotland. They owned and ran the shop by themselves for many years until their eldest son took over in the 1960’s. The original Tidal pool is located between the existing pool on midway to Illovo Beach on the south. Because of the high tide washing over those rocks and sweeping up the shore, it woukd constantly draw beach sand back into the tide pool, and fill the level up with sand. This entailed the locals having to constantly dig the sand out and return it back up onto the beach. I have not researched the actual date when it was decided to relocate the tidal pool to the higher elevation of rocks but from memory it would have been close to late 1940’s into 1950’s. The New Life Savers Club” was also built at that time. There were also many “Life Saving Competition’s” held on that beach between the clubs on the South Coast. There weren’t any if the big vacation resort apartments in existence in the 1950’s or 60’s. Original residential homes were on those hill tops overlooking the ocean. I often played with school friends who lived in those homes. I left Winkle Spruit in 1857 when I got married. My parents and siblings continued to live there for some years after that. The whole if that area has grown astronomically since way back then. It is one of the safest swimming beaches on the South Coast. There were many, many days when us local children, teenagers and adults swam in that very area you video’d on rainy days. The ocean was warm and we enjoyed swimming there regardless if the weather. There is a lot of history attached to that little seaside resort. I hope you enjoy the very limited information i have shared with you. 😊 You should be able to Google or research Wikipedia for more information, 😊
