Art Challenge Feb 2024: Vocabulary
Try these daily mini-exercises using the 27 prompts. (When daily is not possible, you can always batch them every other day or so) Think about shapes, textures, and colors. You can focus on one or all three, it's your choice, but stick to the prompt word.
Keep it under 30 minutes when possible. These exercises help you become more aware of these visual elements, which you can apply to your larger paintings.
The goal is to work regularly and discover inspiration along the way.
Day 1: Curves
Use curves as the main focus of your vocabulary today. Incorporate them into your composition, emphasizing their flow and grace. What are the colors of curves? :D
Day 2: Vibrant
Experiment with bold and lively hues to capture attention.
Day 3: Rough
Explore rough textures in your piece. Consider using materials that evoke a sense of coarseness and ruggedness.
Day 4: Geometric
Focus on geometric shapes today. Play with squares, triangles, circles, and other defined forms to structure.
Day 5: Serene
Create a tranquil and serene scene, using calming colors and smooth textures.
Day 6: Contrast
Emphasize the contrast between light and dark, or warm and cool colors.
Day 7: Organic
Let nature inspire you. Incorporate organic shapes and textures found in plants, trees, or natural landscapes.
Day 8: Monochromatic
Challenge yourself to work with a single color palette today, exploring the variations within that color.
Day 9: Opacity and Transparency
Explore the contrast between opaque and transparent elements in your artwork.
Day 10: Smooth
Focus on creating a sense of smoothness and fluidity.
Day 11: Playful Infuse playfulness into your exercise through vibrant colors, whimsical shapes, or textures.
Day 12: Gradient
Work with gradients of color or texture to achieve a smooth transition between different elements.
Day 13: Bold Go for bold and dramatic choices, using intense colors, shapes, or textures to make a statement.
Day 14: Mosaic
Create an artwork reminiscent of a mosaic, with small, intricate pieces coming together to form a larger whole.
Day 15: Delicate
Capture a sense of delicacy in your art, using subtle colors and fine textures.
Day 16: Intertwined
Explore the concept of things intertwining in your artwork, whether it's shapes, colors, or textures.
Day 17: Whimsy
Let your imagination run wild and create something whimsical and playful.
Day 18: Rhythmic
Infuse rhythm and movement into your artwork through patterns, shapes, or textures.
Day 19: Translucent
Experiment with creating a translucent effect in your art, where shapes or colors appear semi-transparent.
Day 20: Texture
Exploration Dedicate today to exploring various textures and experimenting with different materials to create tactile sensations.
Day 21: Three-Dimensional
Create a three-dimensional effect in your artwork, making elements appear to pop off the surface.
Day 22: Subdued
Embrace a subdued and muted color palette, focusing on soft and understated textures.
Day 23: Symmetry
Explore symmetry in your composition, creating balance and order with shapes, colors, and textures.
Day 24: Chaos
Contrast the previous day by introducing chaos and disorder into your artwork, using unconventional shapes, colors, or textures.
Day 25: Flowing Lines
Emphasize the beauty of flowing lines in your art, creating a sense of movement.
Day 26: Tranquil Colors
Capture tranquility with soft and calming colors in your composition.
Day 27: Celebration
Celebrate your 27-day journey by creating a piece that reflects your growth and newfound art vocabulary. Combine various elements to express your unique style.
Have fun, and share your work!
Thank you!

Experimenting with a much larger canvas than usual. 60x90 inches, and it's been a fun experience for me. I went in without much of a plan. It was all about having fun and letting loose. I really stretched myself, quite literally, using broad, sweeping motions to make these energetic marks as a base. Then, to mix things up, I added some sharper, more defined shapes on top. Nice coversation! I love that she is talking about Neuroplasticity and Emotional Intelligence! I don't think she used the words Emotional Intelligence, but the whole RAIN thing is 100% common EI steps that everyone of all ages should work toward being able to do all the time. There are a number of great books on EI...I wish everyone would read them.
