3. Working Row 1
Learn to work the first row of single crochet (sc) into the foundation chain, through the back "bump." There are many ways to work into the foundation chain; working into the back "bump" gives a polished edge that matches the top of the final row of your work.

5. Fastening off your work

Learn how to secure the final stitch of your project, so it won't come undone. Generally, I leave a 6-8 inch (15-20cm) tail; consult your pattern to check if they provide specific guidance.
4. Working Row 2 and beyond

After you've completed Row 1, you'll turn your work, create a turning chain, and work the single crochet (sc) into the tops of the stitches of the previous row. I demonstrate how to mark the first and last stitch of the row; this helps to maintain your original stitch count.
2. Creating a Foundation Chain

The foundation chain is the basis of your work. There are many ways to tension the working yarn; I'm demonstrating what works for me. Feel free to experiment with a method that feels comfortable to you. The idea is to create a string of consistently-sized chains that you can easily insert your hook into.
1. Making a slip knot

To start your work, you'll need to make a slip knot. This is just one way to make a slip knot; find the method that makes the most sense to you. Generally, I leave a 6-8 inch (15-20cm) tail; check your pattern for any specific instructions.
