Tarantula Hawk Wasp Dragging Tarantula - Colombia
มุมมอง 1.5K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
While doing some work on a farm about an hour west of Bogota, Colombia I spotted what I later learned was a tarantula hawk (or tarantula wasp). I believe this one specifically is Pepsis sumtuosa. It will keep the tarantula paralyzed in order to lay eggs in its abdomen. The larvae will subsequently feed on the tarantula. Apparently the tarantula hawk has one of the most painful insect bites know...

Novation Summit Sound Design 10: Mono Modes

Novation Summit Sound Design 9: Shepard-Risset Glissando
มุมมอง 1.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I demonstrate how to create a simple "Shepard-Risset Glissando" or infinitely rising / descending sound on the Novation Summit or Peak. This should also work well with other some other synths. There are various ways to create this sound. Initially I tried by using an LFO set to a sawtooth wave, which has a similar effect as a looping envelope, with the additional benefit (at least...
Novation Summit Sound Design 8: Waveshaping
มุมมอง 2.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Changing the shape of a waveform such as a sine, triangle, sawtooth, or square wave could mean many things depending on the synthesizer you are using. In this video I talk about what it means to change the shape of certain standard waveforms and wavetables on the Novation Summit and Peak, while in the process building a patch I hope you will enjoy. Filter Self-Oscillation: What and Why?
มุมมอง 2.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Filter self-oscillation occurs as a result of resonance (a type of feedback) taking the electrical "noise" inherent in a synthesizer and feeding it back right at the filter's frequency cutoff point, resulting in a pure sine wave of that frequency. It can be useful as an additional analog oscillator on your synth and gives you another way to go about making music. In particular it can be useful ...

มุมมอง 1.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I go through the design of an 80s keyboard patch using one of the wavetables on the Novation Summit, alongside a sine wave. The sine wave gives the patch most of its volume but the wavetable ("Tubey") adds a nice quality to the sound.

I watched all your videos as I am very interested to buy the Summit in couple month. Before I can decide I have a question. With factory patches, can program any sounds? Like String, Brass, Violin, Flute, Nice pianos like the sounds on Korg M1 or Roland D-50? Or I will need to find samples and upload them to summit first?

Pretty overlooked area of synths imo! Alex Ball played a gorgeous whistling filter patch in one of his Juno videos and I was stumped at recreating it on my Neutron until I realised I could keytrack the filter and just turn the oscillators off - adding noise to a low pass filter really gives it a vintage whistling grain and switching through the high-pass/band-pass modes gives different character too :)

Hi James, my apologies if this comes through as a duplicate - I’m not sure if the first time I posted this went through. Would you be willing to provide some hints and tips to me to re-create Jack Casady‘s bass sound on Jefferson Airplanes White Rabbit? I’ve made attempts at it and I’m getting in the ballpark but I could use a little guidance - I’m starting with a sawtooth on OSC 1 range 8 and OSC 2 range 16 and I’m thinking I’m wanting to add some percussive effect as you show here as well as some LFO for a little movement kind of like a little rumble and some distortion - I think he’s overdriving his amp a bit and of course reverb. it sounds OK but I think it’s missing some of the analog “warmth” I’m going try adding that in next. My understanding is he did this on a fender jazz bass - e.g. not using any active electronics (yet) - and I can re-create the sound on my jazz bass, but in the summit is another matter. As a part of learning, I’m trying to re-create some of the classic 60s and 70s stock/folk/blues sounds. Any help is appreciated!

Great vid. Honestly ? As a Summit owner (2 years) I was looking to a Prophet 5 review the other day. They only thing I did was smiling and not worrying at al...in contrary. I made patches on the Summit that never ever can be equaled by any Prophet, Ob, Jupiter or other over hyped analog. Not in dynamics, sonic palette or technical possibilities ! But I can make my Summit sound like a Prophet...nuf said.

Sounds like a resounding "get a summit" if I ever heard one. I'm currently saving up for one, such an awesome flexible poly (my first).

Great vid. Keep up the good work for all those noobs out there. ;-) It's simple. The Novation Summit is simply the best synth since the Virus TI. It's got kind of a 'dark' edge that only few synths out there have. Even latest analogs like P5 or OB6 don't even come near. (the Summit make me think of my old Oberheim M12 in special string like sounds)

This is so awesome! This could be a potential catalyst for the 'Tonto' patch.

love this sound especially when you started changing the waves at the end. novice question: when you are setting your sound to 2 voices and then turning detune off, are you just basically raising the volume of that single sound? or is there something else going on there that changes the sound in a different way than just raising the volume? i don't quite have the ear yet to tell if there's a difference

Thank you! Editing my previous reply here: I want to say that in unison mode the voices are slightly out of phase with each other but I am going to ask around.
