On December 26, 1987, Bobby Rydell appeared at the WAEB Radio / Laneco Christmas Spectacular. The show was held at the Stabler Arena, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa. Just prior to his performance on stage, I was able to meet with Bobby Rydell for a brief interview. At that time, Rydell had been appearing in the Lehigh Valley for well over 25 years. We had met in the past during his many stops in the area, but this was the first time I was able to interview Rydell.
My special tribute to Bobby Rydell aired as originally produced and in its entirety only one time during my Sunday Night Hall of Fame shows. The original broadcast was January 10, 1988. I digitally restored the original audio from that radio broadcast for this video.
Part 2 includes Bobby talking about touring again with “The Boys Of Bandstand” and also remembering appearing on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand and touring with Clark’s “Caravan Of Stars”
Great songs included in this Part 2 of 4 parts include what I called the “Boys Of Bandstand” medley including Frankie Avalon “A Boy Without A Girl”, Fabian “String Along”, Chubby Checker “Toot” and Bobby Rydell “Swingin’ School”. The song “Toot” was the original Flip Side of the 1960 release of “The Twist”. In 1961, when “The Twist” was re-released by Parkway records, the Flip Side was “Twistin USA”.
Another great Bobby Rydell hit on this video is “Volare”, a song that in 1958 reached the #1 position around the world as “Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blue”. The song is also fondly remember by many as a 1958 hit for Dean Martin. Only two years after the first two big versions, many forget that the song was a huge hit for Bobby Rydell as it charted #4.
