I have just been so impressed with a Bergmann made by young Chang. It is a wonderful instrument. I've heard some say that it makes a difference as to the year each model was made as to how well it plays. Enjoyed your demonstration. The thing that was so impressive to me about the Bergmann I hear from time to time is the wonderful tone and definition of the base. The base of many pianos gets lost in the rest of music the player is playing. With this particular Bergmann I hear, the base is often the standout feature of the song and is so clear and the tone is just remarkable.

How do you describe the opposite sound (obscure? flat?) ? and what is the cure?

I don't know. This one is too bright for me. It's interesting how bright some could be and others just slightly. Yes, it belongs in a big space.

Wonderful pianos. Mine is a 1918. Has never been rebuilt. Still holds tune at A400. And no cracks in its soundboard. Well made pianos. Your piano sounds incredible!

I bought a G-185 brand new from AZ Piano on Interstate 10 in Jan. 1996 exactly like this one, high gloss black, just beautiful. They called the 6'1" an Artist Grand at the time. I wanted a real grand, not a "baby" grand. I sold it in July 1996, not because I wanted to but because I had a note on the piano and I had to sell it to pay off the note so they would let me have a mortgage. It was a short love affair, but the guy who bought it did so for his wife as a gift and he lived high on the mountain top in Paradise Valley. So it got moved up on the mountain behind the golf course, behind the resort on Lincoln Drive and I lost track of it afterwards. I always wished that I could track it down and buy it back, but its just been too many years but it sure is nice to hear yours play so beautifully. I absolutely loved mine and I really miss it.

Well that seemed nice enough, but surely you could have found a more interesting song that would have shown a much greater range of the disclaivier system. Disappointing, sorry to say.

presently restoring a 1912 Chickering of the same length I believe, I know what you mean by the strong base, I also have a Chickering from 1927 where the action is engineered differently.

A model L with a Renner action? Thought that was available only on SF and SD? If true, that’s a rare model L and would be snatched up by anyone who knew anything about what they were buying.

Mason and Hamlins are pretty awesome. I own a 1906 M&H AA, completely rebuilt in 2018. The sound of these instruments is so enveloping, just as you described. Trivia: the great composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff thought very highly of Mason & Hamlins.
