ITS DONE!!!! today marks the 2 year anniversary of the look whos inside again animatic! ive had this pmv planned and partially storyboarded ever since coming up with that one, but since it was longer, more elaborate, and had more characters i already struggled to draw (including fumikado themself) i put it off for really long. but no more!!! i am finally strong enough to do it justice!!!! still cant stay on model but whateverrrrr
LORE (settle in this is a long one):
fumikado and chouki were orphaned and taken in by fumikado's grandfather, iwakado. in return, they would help him resurrect their ancestor, taira no masakado, and make him the new emperor. chouki was raised as fumikados servant, and fumikado would be the vessel for masakados soul. to do this, fumikado swapped bodies with a homuncular oni named para as a child and sealed them away.
iwakado died before they could suceed, but fumikado and chouki carried on. they were going to use the saeda, a flute only able to be played by the dead, to resurrect masakado somehow (its confusing). chouki killed themself in order to play it, but came back as a ghost incapable of breathing. fumikado cut them out of the plan, which hurt chouki deeply, feeling betrayed and discarded, and so they gained a grudge against fumikado and swore revenge on them.
later, fumikado was told by an informant in the capital that a large swarm of spirits would pour into mugenri (the world theyre in) which could be used for the resurrection plan. but its not like they had anyone who could play the saeda anyway, and they wanted to get rid of the flute that killed chouki. while escaping assassination leaving the capital however, fumikado ran into iyozane, a boater who, by some miracle, was able to play the saeda. check out my iyozane pmvs if you wanna know why that might be~
unfortunately, at the exact location and time they had decided to do the resurrection ritual, a giant soul-eating flower happened to bloom. this caused them to attract way more spirits than intended to the location, which merged together and gave birth to shion. due to the ritual failing, fumikados allies - the youkai alliance, led by garaiya - abandonned them, but iyozane (and the vegetable jockey they hired, tsugumi) stayed.
a few months later, a war broke out between the youkai alliance and the capital. fumikado asked the senri priest (tsubakura) to investigate but was blown off, so they set out to get to the bottom of it themself.
investigating the capital side, fumikado learns that the emperor they had dedicated their life to overthrowing had already been killed in a coup orchestrated by his child mitori, who was now the new emperor and had given their fathers crown to their commoner friend kunimitsu (also iyozane's old friend). even more shocking however, they learn that iyozane had actually been the dead original heir to the throne this entire time. as iyozane happily reunites with their loved ones, everything fumikados entire life had been leading up to is now gone. everything they had sacrificed and everyone they had hurt has all been for nothing.
investigating the youkai alliance, fumikado is mocked by garaiyas shikigami (kujiru and kaisen) and fumikado learns the dragonfly castle - a legendary flying castle that chooses its ruler by landing in front of them - had already chosen an emperor, and garaiya is following them now. furious that someone else was chosen as the emperor first, fumikado wants to know who it is. it turns out to be none other than chouki, who unsealed para (now in fumikado's child body) and accepted the position specifically to spite fumikado. the two confront each other, and drama ensues.
