Winter is finally over! Spring fishing for South African Yellowfish
Join me for a full, day-long session on the Orange River in the Northern Cape in the first few days of spring. Finally broke my Smallmouth streak with a few respectable Largemouth Yellows. If the season starts like this one, I can't wait for the rest of the year!

Rapala X-Light Mid Runner Crank bait review
มุมมอง 1.6K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
A little while back Rapala introduced the X-Light range of lure to their Line-up. These new little finesse lures were a welcome addition to Rapala's range as they not only added finesse options to the range using more modern production technology, but they also did so at a very Angler-Friendly price point! After using the Rapala X-Light Mid runner crank for almost a year for both BFS and light ...

I enjoy the action and its ability to run deep, but the split rings leave much to be desired.

Testing new toys on the river - home made lure made me proud again.

Getting up early to test out some new gear on the water. Throwing a very basic but seemingly effective little homemade jig head at Smallmouth and Largemeouth Yellowfish in South Africa's Orange River The weather didn't play along all day, but I had enough time to run my new Purelure Silver Feather in properly and give the Handing MAgic L 602UL a thorough workout. I love playing with new toys.
Handing Blast 8 Review

I've been on the hunt for a solid-performing budget-friendly braided line for a few months now. I've slowly been working my way through all the options on Ali Express. Handing recently offered to send me their offering, Blast 8, an 8-strand, tightly woven and very smooth braided line. In this video, I share my experience in testing this line. Teeming with life - Yellowfish on the Orange River

At the end of March 2024 I took a few days to explore a section of the Orange River that hasn't been fished by anyone in years. Comparing my usual spots on days one and two, to the unfished sections on days two and three, it is clear this untapped section of the river is absolutely teeming with life and these fish are HUNGRY! Freeing a stuck lure on BFS or Ultralight tackle
มุมมอง 4756 หลายเดือนก่อน
Got my lure stuck this weekend and thought I might as well use the opportunity to make a short video on how I free either my lure or my line without destroying my ultralight tackle. I have learnt the hard way that this is the lowest-risk way of retrieving your lure or, if that isn't possible, as much line as possible. Learn from my mistakes ;-) Remember to use a glove, otherwise, you will end u...

I have had 4 Handing ultra light casting rods and all of them have snapped unfortunately. One of them broke just by falling over. Nice rods at first, but they just don’t hold up.
As a complete novice fisherman it seems perfect for me as i love to cast and reel in fast. It was a perfect birthdays gift from my sister and i hope i get lucky at Durban point beach.
I just bought one, thank you for the great review!
By all accounts this a good rod that i was considering purchasing. However the very through information given in this vid has saved me the expense of buying one and not being able to use it in my preferred fishing technique due to the eyes being too small for a bobber stop. Thank you. (channel subbed)
Glad to hear it saved you both time and money! Few things suck more than buying something and only realising afterwards it can't do what you wanted. Appreciate the feedback!
What lures are you using😊
Hi Liam, first fish was caught with a Sensation Ghillemientjie. The second two was with a topwater lure I make myself.
I clicked on this video expecting a normal review, but I was really impressed with the way you went about presenting it and reviewing it. when I saw the subcriber count I was blown away how underrated you are, I usually do not subcribe to people but you definitely deserve it!
Much appreciated Dominik! I am very happy if my if my content is helpful!
Thinner diameter is more smooth casting
Just received the ultra lite kit & what I did with my metal snippers is snip one of the hooks off so there are only two hooking points now.
Nice video! If you could recommend 1 lure for yellowfish what would it be? I figured Salmo lures are best, but which ones specifically?
I might surprise you here Matthew, but Salmo would not be my #1 pick for Yellowfish. I know if you ask almost anyone in South Africa which is the “best” lure for Yellows, almost all will say Salmo. I’m not one of them. Remember, time of year, water quality, depth and where you are in the country is going to play a massive role of the efficacy of a specific lure, so keep that in mind. If I had to pick JUST one lure to fish all year in any river I would go for the Sensation Ghillemientjie in Dikkop colour. It has been my most successful commercially purchase lure over the last 5 or so years. I would immediately replace the split rings and hooks on it though. The lure is excellent, hardware is not. I replace the split rings with ones I buy in bulk and recommend singles for Yellowfish. Good local options are VMC mangrove inline singles in the smallest size (#6) or BKK Lone Snipers in #8. If I can expand that list to 3 lures it would be the Sensation Ghillemientjie, the 2cm or 3cm (4-4.5cm for deeper water) Salmo Hornet in pearly shad, and the Rapala X-light mid-runner crank in ghost shiner (also replace the hooks on these, they are too big and cause lots of damage). With these three you can cover a lot of bases. Adding additional Salmo is Real identity perch, Yellow holographic perch and gold fluorescent perch are good options, as well.
Thanks for the reply! Just a follow-up question. Are the sinking or floating lures better (at least in the salmo hornet range)?
@@matthewhesselink4075 , @matthewhesselink4075 , I dislike when people give advice like “go fish and you will learn what the fish want” or “the fish will tell you”. It’s an easy way of not actually giving usable advice but sounding like you have lots of experience, but it does not help in the least. Fish have never told a single thing, so I won’t offer you advice like that. I will acknowledge that I’ve learnt by spending days catching nothing, days catching a handful, or days catching on every second cast. It takes a lot of time on the water to learn what fish MIGHT want in specific conditions. There is no cheat sheet I can give you that will always work. Experience teaches you how to adapt, and that improves your odds. With that said, you’re question is a little hard to answer succinctly, as there are a lot of variables, and you have to adapt as you go, depending on the area as well as weather and water temp, as well as the depth you are fishing due to the previous three factors. At the end of the day, it is best to have a few of each handy. I know you don’t want to hear that, but it’s true When looking Specifically at Salmo hornets, if floating and sinking are available in the same size I'd opt for floating, based purely on the fact that they run pretty deep already, and there is a better chance of getting one back if stuck. In the smallest size (2cm) they are only available in sinking, so that's what I’d recommend. In minnows (longer thinner profiles), I might (likely) opt for a sinking over a floating, as that would allow me to drift it down with the current, adding twitches while staying at the same depth. Expanding a bit on why you could choose floating VS sinking: If you fish round a lot of larger rock, there is a good chance your lure can and will swim in under or between some. If it’s a floating lure, there is a chance you can free it by letting it float back up/out. Odds are less with a sinking lure. A sinking lure for the same size will also allow you to run it a bit deeper by letting it sink. On colder days fish are likely to be holding in deeper, warmer water. In low light, fish are likely to come to the surface to hunt as they are less likely to be spotted and evaded, but will be hiding deeper during the day. Lastly, sinking lures allow you to twitch/jerk while staying at the same depth, while floating lures will rise when paused. Most of these are personal choices based on experience and knowing what fish want in a specific area and your style. These choices matter a lot if fishing is tough, and matter less when fish are actively hunting. I’ll mention that it is more important to imitate what is in the water already, which is why I usually have more success with longer, thinner profiled lures, as that is what is prevalent in our river systems.
Nice catch Jano! Have always thought that those Yellowfish are very similar to the Asian species Mahseer. Strong fish!
Had a quick look, and they seem to all be in the same genus, Barbus, so they seem to be related. Just wish they used a little more creativity when naming them. Yellowfish isn't particularly imaginative😅
Beautiful fish jano! Are those fish a type of barb or carp out of curiosity? Cheers my friend!
Hi Peter!, They are in the same genus, Barbus, so it seems they are related, but that's about as much as I know. Ichthyology isn't my strong suit.
@@LightTackleLureAngling hey jano! Right on! It’s not really mine as well haha was just thinking it looks really similar to barbs or a carp haha. Nice catch my friend!
This is the best Rod review I’ve seen. Wow
Can anyone compare this to the dobyns Sierra trout and panfish
Excellent review 👍.. better than any i have seen..no nonsense no STOOOPID RAP OR LOUD BACKGROUND UNNECESSARY SOUNDS OR MUSIC ...just a real informative review to aid the consumer in making a decision 👍..thank u.. only one hang up.. I have yet to see anyone do a review on the spinning rod version ❓❓❓
Thank you for the feedback and kind words. Good to know what I'm doing right. Can't remember that I've seen a spinning version reviewed either, but if they use the same blank, which they are likely to do, I'm sure it would be a solid performing allrounder. I rarely review spinning gear if similar casting rods are available, as I find them more comfortable and fit my tastes a little better. Thanks again!
I love my 6’ and 6’6” version. They’ve handled some big Texas bass.
Qué sedal es el que usas ? Que diámetro?
Another great review. Your vids have saved me a heap of time in terms of research. Thanks for sharing
What a great review. I am in the process of exploring and developing a BFS approach here in Western Australia. Everyone here is fixated on fixed spool reels for light tackle fishing. Baitcasters eliminate line twist and with the amount of casting I do per session this is important. Keep the info coming, it's much appreciated. Thanks for sharing.
1 to 1.5m is what i use for u;tralight salt and hampala. Its not too long or short and worjs perfect for me
Should replace all split rings and the trebles Id use singles
Jano is that an Abu spinning rod? Looks like the same one I caught my PB perch on laat year.
Hi Jacob! It's a Noeby Keen Force Light Fast action 7'6 2-10g. Solid little rod!
Excellent video! Although I already own this rod, I appreciate the thought you put into it with the distance chart and the slow motion on the rod tips loading up. You wouldn’t believe how many people show distance testing different rods/reels without summarizing or screen charts to compare and study. Nice job!
Do you know if replacing the twin treble-hooks with one, single-point hook would compromise the lure's ability to sink?? I'm curious to know if it would change the speed of the sinking movement or completely eliminate the ability to sink.
Shouldn't, but I'll test it out for you this week
@@LightTackleLureAngling Right on, I'd appreciate hearing those findings.
@@Koops2245, Sorry for the delay. Tested out some #8 singles. The UL Shad does indeed still sink with singles in fresh water, but it changes the angle of the lure during the sink. As removing the trebles removes a lot f the middle and rear weight, it sinks nose down with singles. So changes the look of the lure a fair bit during pauses.
@@LightTackleLureAngling Thank you for sharing your experiment data here. You read my mind with the #8 hook size. I'm going to try a solitary single-point #8 hook on mine in a fresh-water stream. Now I'm wondering if one hook is more effective on the belly position or the tail position. More fun little bits of research for me. Cheers.
@@Koops2245 I'd got for tail if I were going with only one single. More likely to get hit on the back, and less likely to snag on the bottom. Would balance out the lip a bit better there too. Won;t hurt to try both and see.
Love that Kayak colour btw. If I even get a pedal kayak I am going to try and get one in that colour :)
The grup at the ebd of the butt, just for those curious the Ryobi Ranmi version just have plain foam and not the metal end cap.
Not friendly price. 20 bucks is expensive knowing you can have 1 ounce rapala or yo zuri lures for less than that-. LIked the gray color. Saw a nice review on another channel. Thanks
Which country are you in, Wildside? Guess they don’t follow the same pricing strategy in your region?Asking as locally, for me, they are less than half the price of “normal” Rapala lures like the smaller X-Rap and Shad Rap. Smaller Rapala lures usually range from $8-12 US here, and the X-Light sells for between $4-5, which is comparatively affordable. Unfortunate hear it is not the same where you are. Thanks for watching, and the engagement. Always interesting to learn pricing from other countries.
I so wish that cranks and minnows worked in my home lake. Sadly they just don’t seem to produce as well as soft plastics for me. Loving the in-depth lure videos though! Cheers jano!
Have you ever considered adding a small piece of tungsten putty to the front. It will make it suspend and allow you to twitch it like an injured bait fish. Great video BTW
Thanks Frank, I haven’t tried that yet, but I’ll give it a go!
Im definitely a natural colour fan also. I actually dont like silver lures but may be forced to try them at this new location where all the salmonods are quite silver. So I guess thats a natural colour in that location haha😂
Nice review jano! Love that disclaimer at the end! 🙌🙌🙌
Great to see you regularly posting Jano, this moght be a lure od be interested in. Small but still fairly deep diving.
Nice review Jano! Love the Rapala ultra light range of lures, makes great BFS lures for sure. The ultra light crank is my favourite!
Great detail review.
Very good review Sir.
New subscriber here. I love your reviews mate! Very detailed and comprehensive. I've had this rod in my cart for a while, but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. After watching this, I probably will as soon as the next sale starts this coming week. Thank you for this great review!
Josss
Alleged Fuji guides hehe. Remember the printing on the guides is in an unusual position?
It’s a difficult one. They are stamped as Fuji guides and visually look like Fuji guides, but BFS Fishing Channel did note the stamp was on the outside and believes the stamp is usually inside on standard Fuji guides. I am honestly not expert enough to tell the difference between real authentic Fuji Guides and good fake ones. They look real enough to me, when comparing to my Shimano and Daiwa rods with Fuji guides, and with the stamp on there, it’s enough for me. Handing has made an active effort to establish their brand in recent months. I don’t believe a brand will go through the efforts of marketing and building brand presence only to do something silly like lie about a replica component. Something that could be easily refuted. Stranger things have happened, but in this case I am willing to give Handing the benefit of the doubt and accept they are indeed Fuji guides.
Fantastic review! Thorough yet quick and to the point. Good job, I subscribed!
Much appreciated!
Ive been so impressed with the sensitivity and durability of this rod that I own 4 now. 2UL ann 2 L
Amazing review!! I like that you actually show the taper of the rod! That’s something a lot of other TH-camrs don’t do! Keep up the good work! Can’t wait to see more content like this from your channel

Nice review! Really appreciate the section with loading of the rod with some weight that you do. Gives a good picture of the action. I have the exact same rod, have had mine for a while but need to use it more!
I have a couple and I agree, they are great little rods.
