great record and god he really ate it up with the cover. mermaid hair, puckish little smile, laptop computer, black tee... so pure

Maybe they came to give it a try (commendable) and hated it.
He's a big enough name for people who aren't noise fans to hear about him from the hipper music publications, so they come expecting something arty and then get bulldozered. It doesn't help that music journalists are the softest people in the world when it comes to abrasion, so they'll talk about 70's punk rock like it's noise. The audience hears what they're told is noisy and thinks "oh, I can handle noisy" and then the aforementioned bulldozering happens.
