Not really singing - more like dictating to the DEAD.

I loved Nico, and this is an interesting piece in terms of art, but if I were a person with suicidal tendencies I am pretty sure this would push me over the edge. Incredibly dark and depressing.

I see Nico finally dug that damn flute which she hated on Chelsea Girl.

Here are the most approximate translations and transliterations of Nico's comments during this concert: ‘PROCESSION’ “This song is called ‘Procession Line’ and it will be on my next record” (The song was recorded many times, although the name was ultimately left as “Procession”. It was never released on either version of “Drama of Exile”) “This song, is a love song … which I dedicate to Genghis Khan” ‘GENGHIS KHAN’ “Maybe you ignored the first song” (Nico addresses the lack of applause after her first song, not unusual for her, specially in 1978 when she has sporadically performed in Europe but mostly stayed off the public eye. Her music, lyrics and looks are unrecognizable to most of her audience) ‘PURPLE LIPS’ “Thank you very much, I needed a lot of courage these days. “There was a friend of mine from New York who gave thi to me (her harmonium) a as a gift---- because they stole mine. She's a singer". (The singer in question is Patti Smith as described by Nico herself on the book Nico: The Lies and Life of an Icon by Richard Witts. This incident happened in Paris where Nico was too ashamed to ask Patti for money. Patti Smith has never spoken publicly on the subject, possibly out of humbleness and respect to Nico. ) “This song is about a sailor, his name was Henry Hudson” ‘HENRY HUDSON’ “This song is called The Sphinx” ‘THE SPHINX’ “I’m going to sing to you a song in German… if that doesn’t bother you… (Unaudible)” ‘ABSCHIED’ “Someone is smoking some illegal stuff in here” ‘NO ONE IS THERE’ “Oh, vanity” (Nico possibly stops to look at herself on a hand mirror and fixing her hair) ‘JANITOR OF LUNACY’ “Old east -- *Nico hears the baby's cries* "A Petit Chevalier? Unfortunately I cannot ---- otherwise I could even invite my son who sings on the record but he was taken away from me --- it happens all the time --- it’s been three years --- hasn’t called --- This is the borderline song, it’s about a young man who passes the border that has slept for a long time” (Even though Nico has been living in Paris for the past half a decade with her then lover Philippe Garrel and Ari lives a mere 30 min. ride away in Bourg-la-Reine, she has been stranded from her son and hasn't seen him in years) ‘FROZEN BORDERLINE’ ‘INNOCENT AND VAIN’ “Have I sung to you the Valley of the Kings?... I wrote this song for Charles Manson… I’m sure some of you ---- but I don’t think it was his fault” ‘VALLEY OF THE KINGS’ (Inaudible) ‘SECRET SIDE’ “Because there is a young French man that sings after me--- and the neighbors are very shy because this (the theatre) is in from of him --- and they love going to bed early. Here I’m going to sing for you - I guess The End - When will I stop singing this song? ('Jamais' replies the audience) -Never” ‘THE END’

The album THE END from which this song is taken, came out in 1974 .Jim.Morrison was disappeared in 1971. It is no t possible that NICO was singing this song in 1970...

She would often play songs in their early forms, before they were recorded for an album, at her gigs. This is one of those.

It's not strange at all; just because she hated the flute on Chelsea Girl does not mean that she hated the flute altogether. In this concert, it is a fitting accompaniment to her harmonium.

Nico and Jim Morrison were the original Gothic musicians. Laura Nyro had the look first.
