Signal & Trace - Dagworks with Stefan Krawczyk
Signal & Trace Episode #15
In this episode, we chat with Stefan, the CEO of DAGworks, a startup helping developers make AI and machine learning projects more reliable and easy to manage. Stefan shares how DAGworks’ tools-Hamilton and BIRR-are helping developers build smarter, more reliable AI applications. These tools let you visualize and organize your code like a flowchart, which makes it easier to track and improve. Whether you're using AI for data or building complex "agents" that can learn and make decisions, DAGworks has tools to help you get there faster.
In This Episode, We Cover:
-How big language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT are changing the way engineers work
-What DAGworks does and why it’s useful for developers working on AI
-Why observability and reliability matter for AI projects
-How DAGworks helps developers manage the complexity of AI

The best explaination for otel
Amazing conversation!!
Very cool
which mechanism takes care that a trace can be followed from frontend to Backend to frontend? Ive got my otel instance ready just wondering how is thing thing taken care of. BY some user id or?
Good question! There is a concept called "context propagation" (opentelemetry.io/docs/languages/js/propagation/) that provides a mechanism for connected signals across distributed systems. For connecting between client and server, we use headers on network requests from the client to connect them to signals from the server, and a <meta> tag to pass the initial trace information from the server to the template it's rendering and returning to the client for the initial request.
would you have the code repo handy? interested to check the Rails config since the gem always throws error for me. thanks. great product btw
Yep, here you are: github.com/highlight/highlight/tree/main/e2e/ruby/rails/demo
Does it allow using Bun in the backend? Because it only lists nodejs
Yes, highlight should work with Bun!
Wow this is great! We are currently implementing otel in our environments where we mostly develop in java for the backend and angular on the frontend and it's been a godsend for the backend stuff. This could be very useful to evaluate user experience and optimize. Would this in theory be ran only in development environments? Could it be a security issue in production as an angular app in ran from the client's system? I will share this with my frontend collegue tomorrow. Great content! Thanks so much my dude!
Thanks for the message. It shouldn't be a security issue if you're sending the data over SSL (the standard here) to a known OTEL backend. Highlight does make that easy beacuse you don't need to host a collector yourself, but you could also do your own hosting.
Good one 👍
This is good stuff man. Some diagrams would have been amazing. Subscribed!
Great feedback, will keep this in mind for our next set of vids :)
Yeah, this is quite a good, clear and simple overview of Otel. I do courses in this topic too. I like how you did this.
Thanks!
Evaluating vendors right now none of them supports vanilla otel and they heavily relay on kube state metrics
We've noticed that as well and have made it a goal at Highlight to support ingestion of OTEL data from any instrumentation, not just our SDKs. Please reach out if you ever want to learn more!
Very informative.thank u very much
For sure! Glad you liked it :)
i saw a lot of otel intro videos, this is the the best of them
Appreciate that!
I don’t know why but you look like a next gen game engine demo. Like for Unreal Engine 5 or something.
i used to be a fan of this channel but after this guy im disappointed , hes so scary
great overview Chris!
it was a fantastic and an engaging discussion
Self hosting is NOT an enterprise feature. Home hobbyists exist. OIDC/SSO is also NOT a business feature.
The music is good in the bg, don't listen to haters
Background music is unnecessary, and annoying. Gave up on watching this video.
Agree to the Nth degree!
Boi are you copying the design of Hostinger ?

Awesome! Super informative podcast, thanks so much!
Thanks for watching! This is the second one we've produced with this method. We're trying to keep the pipeline full so we can get close to weekly releases.
this guy crushes lara bars
Thanks for having me! What a fun chat during such an exciting time in tech.
Do I still have to do all of this if I use the vercel integration?
Ooh this is interesting! Thank you for this!
thank you andrew tate
