Is the Chinese Lansky copy just as good as the original? A comparison video
In this video I discuss some of the differences between the Lansky knife sharpener and a Chinese copy of the same, which can be found on eBay and other web sites.

Just discovered these on eBay and was about to pull the trigger on buying a set, then had 2nd thoughts about quality. Went looking here for a review. Thanks for the review. I was afraid the stones were not as good as original Lansky and that's really what makes the set. You confirmed my doubts. Thanks.
Happy to be of assistance. I wouldn't call the Chinese copy useless but it definately isn't of the same quality as the Lansky.
Just came by your video and thought I would add my 5 cents. 🤭 Some of these vintage chucks have a set screw that locks the shell to the bottom screw plug, some do not. But do check the bottom part of the shell, about 1/2 to 3/8 of an inch from the end for a set screw. Over the years of use and abuse the end cap is often attempted unscrewed using pin wrench, pipe wrench etc. If there is a set screw it might be wedged in solid. In that case it might be called for a slight tightening of the end cap before attempting to unscrew the set screw. It might not be a set screw on yours and it is just seized up from corrosion and/or abuse. I recommend making a holder like Old Sneelock does in his videos about this issue (do watch his videos - they are top notch!) to securely hold the shell while trying to unscrew the end plug. It has very fine threads so be careful. Cloth amd a machinists vice may also do the trick, but be careful not overtighten it in the vice! If no luck this way I would use heat on the end of the shell before trying to unscrew the end plug. I had to on a couple of mine. As I do not have pin tool I used a pipe wrench and a piece of leather as buffer not to scratch the end plug. Rubber might do also. I trust you have opened your chuck years ago now but maybe others can find some directions from this - at least Old Sneelocks (I might spell that wrong 😄) videos can be uplifting to viewers here 😊

They are both made in China, They are made in different factories by different companies. The copy is far inferior to the original even though they are both made in China.

What about the clamping system? Are they doing the same job or does the Lansky have an obvious advantage? Are the rods straight on the Chinese one?
The clamp and the rods appear to rougly equal to the Lansky system. So theoretically you could get the Chinese setup and buy separate stones from Lansky if you want stone that are different from those included in the box.
@@simonaris Functionally they are the same and in both cases also the weakest point. I glued rubbertape to the inside of the clamp, and now it holds good. I hear more in reviews that the 1000 grit is less good in the chinese set. I think it is a matter of QC margins. Mine works fine, though the magic paper cutting you always see in reviews doesnt work, but neither on the lansky. what i cant find anywhere but would like to know...they are called wetstones. Usually you soak wetstones in water before use untill the bubbles stop coming. If there is any instruction on this set, it talkes about honing oil...How is that why oil instead of water?
This makes me happy.
I had the same problem as you have buy a tapered one instead of threaded and replace the shaft it will last a life time mine is 40 years old Stanley brand . The ones which is used in tail stocks of small lathes l mean .

I see Virelai, I click. It is that simple. They also make me want to learn Danish. That isn’t simple... 😁
Six years later, help possibly arrives.... There might be two holes on the end. You probably don’t have a pin wrench, so find two nails that fit tightly in the holes. Use an adjustable wrench to un screw it. You can make new springs for these to hold the jaws in position. Usually there is not too much wear, just the springs, so you should be able to fix it. Don’t crush the shell while unscrewing the back. The few I have done we’re right hand threads, so turn counterclockwise to remove the shell. The three jaws and the back plate and what’s left of the springs will come out. Try google or bing image search, and a patent image search to find the shape you need if it’s not obvious..
Fantastic, thanks!
amazing music which has been touched in heart and soul
I realize that this comment is coming years after the issue was reported, but I recently purchased one of these on ebay. The seller removed the chuck to reduce the overall length of the shipped product and when it arrived, the 2 of the jaws had become jammed to the side and the steel plate that is meant to hold the jaws in the chuck was pushed to the side. The springs were still attached to the jaws. Only one of the jaws was above the steel plate. I used a wooden toothpick to push one of the 2 misaligned jaws upward far enough for me to grasp it with my fingers. While I was grasping it, I used the same toothpick to move the steel plate a little bit toward the center of the chuck so that the 2 jaws would be above the plate. Then I repeated the same procedure for the 3rd chuck and once all three jaws were on the correct side of the plate, I was able to screw the chuck onto the drill and have the jaws close properly. It's hard to tell if you have the same issue that I have, but the issue is that there is enough room inside the chuck that if the steel plate is shifted to one side, then the jaws can get jammed between the plate and the internal wall of the chuck. And if that happens then the chuck ceases to function properly. Unfortunately, I did not film my fixing the issue and I'm reluctant to return my chuck to its problematic state to show how I fixed it. Sorry that you're having the issue. These drills are wonderful tools and I'm glad I have one in my toolkit.
Nooooooo
MIA IS GREAT!
Have you ever found a solution to your issue? I have 3 hand drills that could use some service on the chucks. I vave one spring missing on one of the chucks and the other two seems to be of different design as they do not have visible springs.
+Steve K No, not really. I tried putting the chuck into a glass of oil to loosen it up but it didn't work. The bottom piece is just stuck and as it is it is not possible to grasp the two pieces properly to pry them apart. One possible solution could be to drill two holes in the side of the bottom and attach a rod, which can then be turned but I haven't tried it yet.
simonaris I wonder if the thread is a left type of three, you know like not the usual right type clockwise tightening thread, but instead of counterclockwise, turn left to tighten and right to loosen.
simonaris OK, so I was incorrect in my precious comment. I just removed the Chuck from the drill then I wrapped it in a decent layer of cotton cloth and put it in the wise and did not tighten too hard, then used a 9/16 wrench to unscrew the cap, it is a regular right hand clockwise thread. The other chucks that I have on two other drills are not cut for a wrench, but rather have slits opposite of each other. I'll try to use something that is long enough and hard enough to unscrew the caps on the remaining two.
