Hi! I am Jim, aka MILaserGuy. This channel is aimed at providing tutorials for LightBurn (lightburnsoftware.com), CO2 and Fiber Galvo laser operation, and making things. I enjoy figuring things out and teaching others to improve the market, and I love interacting with the community to hear about what people want to learn more about.
I got started with my CO2 laser by building a heavily modified Further Fabrication Y-1200 design, and later adding additional lasers to my lab as I expanded my knowledge and needs. My current project is building out my laser business, Brookside Laser.
I appreciate everyone that takes the time to watch my videos, subscribe to my channel, and suffer through my admittedly terrible production quality (I am definitely working on that.)

Great video helped me out alot. Thank you
You forgot to mention that you have to have ungrouped shapes. Then it looks like you can only do it for one shape at a time. Still practicing on this one as it's a great tool option I'll definitely use.
Is there anyway to double the amount of nodes to get a more defined line without having to go through and add them? Thanks
Generally, more nodes is not really the best option. Using appropriate node types (smooth nodes) will help defining your shape properly without adding more nodes. Sometimes, smoothing your shape involves deleting a lot of extra nodes and replacing them with a single or couple smooth nodes, which is a better solution.
This worked for me on the 5th attempt. We should remind viewers that ALL shapes to join need to be on the same layer. I had 2 shapes that wouldn't join. one was on 00 and the other on 01. Thanks for the tips
Good catch, I will mention that in the future.
Hello I got an image I masked with a shape. I now want to punch a whole in that image so the text has a boarder. How do you do that? Been trying for like an hour
Rather than masking with only an outer shape, you would probably want to put the outline with the outside, then mask. i.e. a mask shape with an inside shape also. Here's how: 1. Right click on the image, remove mask. 2. Select your masking shape AND your outline. Group them. 3. Select your masking shape and your image, then apply image mask again. Method 2: 1. Flatten image mask (right click menu) which makes the masking permanent, then apply a new mask with the next shape.
@@milaserguy Both of these didn't worked but I found something that did. Right clicking and selecting apply mask failed every time but if I go to tools and click apply mask it works. Why it works one way and not the other i don't know. Just leaving this here for if someone has the same problem in the future.
This isn't working for me goes good until I get to cut shapes. It doesn't highlight for me to select. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks
I did just confirm this still works the same on 1.7.03, as they have changed how things are automatically selected slightly over the years. I am not sure exactly what you mean by it doesn't highlight to select. If you select your background first, then hold ctrl and click your outline that you will be using as the path to cut, it should select. Worth noting, if you duplicated the outline as I did, it will be difficult to see the dashed line on the outline when selected. You might switch an outline to a different layer and turn it off to make it easier to see what you are working with.
Lightburn has been fixing this issue for years, its frustrating and none of this works ALL the time..Frustrating!!
Hello. how to make a fiber laser. the top layer of the letter (the letters are not engraved in depth, they remain convex), then several deep passes around the letters over the entire area of the workpiece, then a deep geometric pattern around the letters
What you are asking about is 2.5D engraving. You would put them on different layers. Imagine slicing the shape you want horizontally into slices. Each slice would represent what you want to engrave. So your first layer might run several passes and remove everything but the letters. The next several passes would remove everything but the pattern and the letters. (The letters would always be left, since they are tallest, but every time you add more to what is left, you are removing the remainder.) Hope this makes sense.
A lot of awesome information here thank you so much 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Oh man you just saved me so much time! Thank you!!
Glad I could help!
Hi, it be great if you could make it bigger for us to see clearer, I could not follow where to go, Please make it bigger.
Noted. In fact, I just took a look at this video and it looks like the video encoder made it look like it was recorded on a potato. I will see if I can fix that.
I re-uploaded the video, not sure what happened here (and how I didn't notice it before.) th-cam.com/video/qlIeG1uMhrY/w-d-xo.html
Am i able to have for example A1212 B 01 <----- only this issue number keeps progressing
Can you describe more detail about what you are asking? I am not clear on what you are wanting to do.
Hi, new to using this function is there a way to delete tabs when you do automatic? I have some places that I don't need a tag there. thanks
Absolutely. Using the layer settings, turn on "Automatic" for tabs. Close the layer settings, then use the "Tabs" tool (right below node editor). Double-click or shift-click a tab to delete it. This will convert your auto-tabs (green) to manual tabs (red).
Thanks for the Tutorial, this will be useful in other programs like photoshop, 3dsmax and many of the other programs I use. Nice vid! I've got a 10 and 20 S30 Pro, the 10 watt has the 900x900mm expansion kit on it with many other upgrades. Just got the 20 watt and will soon have upgrades on the way to make them identical other than power. I so love lasers! I even just opened a shop- can't put links here and this isn't advertising but the site is ChaosFabs with the other stuff I can't mention, it's open but I'm not looking for many sales to start since I still have a lot of polishing work to do and I'll soon have an Etsy shop- don't want to get overwhelmed. Anyway, nice channel and thanks again! Just subbed :D
how can I activate Mask to image? It does not appears on right bottom in my computer it's in tools but is off. if you can advice thanks.
Thank you. I was looking for a way to cut a shape into 2 and had a lot of trouble, your tip with the "B" was the thing I was missing.
Glad I could help!
So good stuff, but not real clear at all times
I get it. This is especially true of some of my old videos. I am working on this, and will eventually re-create some of these old ones with better sound and whatnot.
I would of liked to have learned something from you! Writings are to small to follow!
Thank you so much. Very well explained.
My machine keeps running out of, can you help? It doesn’t seem to know the limits of the machine
Subbed….now you have 1k lol😂
Thanks!
Thanks for the video! Exactly what I was looking for. I just subscribed.
Thanks for the sub!
how do I make sure my art library is saved on my computer?
When you create an Art Library file (each "category" is its own library), this creates the file that is saved. The library is automatically saved any time you make changes to it (adding or removing art).
thank you this was very helpful 🥰
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful, thank you.
You're welcome!
This helps me a lot! I am trying to engrave some pencils!
Excellent. Let me know if you get stuck.
Question for I'm having trouble engraving a pmag it only does lines no gray color are you anytime going to make a video on something like that just wondering
I will be doing some pmags this month sometime. If you are getting lines, are you sure your layer is set to fill?
Okay thank you I will definitely check it out
Why did my colors from the bottom disappeared
In the "Window" menu, make sure "Color Palette" is checked. If it is, it could be moved somewhere else accidentally. If you can't find it, use Window->Reset to Default Layout
I learned something new today
Awesome.
I'm have trouble engraving my mag I can't figure out how to mark it it just engrave lines
hi Jim , thanks for this video thoroughly enjoyed following along , Took me a couple of times but i mastered it .
Fantastic!
Thank you so much.
Always welcome. Sorry for the poor quality, this video is on the list of ones to re-record using my updated process.
Thanks this was exactly what I was looking for.
Glad I could help! Sorry for the poor video quality, this video is on a list of vids I need to re-record.
Great tutorial!
Thank you!
I appreciate the core spiral construction although I had to watch it several times. Took me several attempts to keep track of all the Right, bottom, left, top... However, now I have evolved the process to make it easier to keep track of all the circles and arcs by creating them as needed and to grow the spiral to any size. If you'd like, I can record a video to describe. I appreciate the jump start. BTW, as others said. Fix the audio.
Yeah, creating them during the process can help keep track of them in order. I found it easier to do as shown. Thanks for the suggestion on the audio, I plan on re-recording these earlier tutorials soon.

O M G. Thank you for this. I was going nuts. This was so frustrating.
Glad it helped!
What if the ice cream cone was set on the counter of an ice cream shop or in a forest? IE: Without a single color opaque background.
This may change how much you have to fix after tracing using node editor. It doesn't really change the process, but if it blends with the background, you may need to fix tracing blemishes to get a proper outline of it.
If I position my laser (current position) to start a cut or etching and I stop the process away from the start. And I want to move back to the start, how do I do that. On my CNC table if I start cut anywhere on the table and that is X0Y0. After stopping it I can just move back to 0,0 which is the start position. That is what I want to do with the laser.
Starting from "current position" can be problematic. If you are using a DSP based controller, what you are actually describing on your CNC is "User Origin". This is my normal operational mode for my CO2 laser. I move it to a position and press the "Origin" button. This sets my user origin, which I use for aligning materials (sometimes the center of an item, sometimes an arbitrary corner). If I stop my laser part-way through the job, as long as I am still using "User Origin", it will start from the same location. I can move the laser back to that spot in the Move window by clicking the "Go to Origin" button in the Laser window. Alternatively, if you save a "current location" in the Move window, you can go back to that position. You can use the "Get Position" to get the current coords, then save it and go back to that position at any time, but setting an origin on the machine is FAR easier, if possible.
@@milaserguy Thanks for the reply, it seems when I click on the stop button, it looses all positions. I have a Ikier 70 watt diode laser and use Lightburn (1.6) but in this instance it acts different from the software I use on my CNC table. When I zero the DROs that is the current position and for any reason I stop I can just return to the zero, zero (current) position with a click of a button (macro). I tried to make a macro in Lightburn but it looks at that like move to home limits not a current position.
On a diode laser (likely GRBL based), you probably would want to use absolute positioning, which is a reference to the 0,0 home position of the laser. The machine should home itself at poweron, so that it understands absolute positions (as well as being able to go to saved positions), however, user origin is not likely available on these machines.
As always a remarkable tutorial. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome!
Hey Jim , Thank You for the plain and easily understandable way you help with all your videos
Glad I could help
Great info! Thank you!
You bet!
Awesome tip. Thank you!!!
You are so welcome!
Hey Jim , Thank you for your excellent teaching and enormously helpful videos. I'm newish to this and have been very frustrated at time . Keep up the good work
Glad it was helpful!
Great video. Thanks. I tried this but the mask option doesn’t show up when I right click. I’ve updated my light burn software but still can’t find the mask option. Any tips?
Hi Matt. Sorry for the late reply. Did you confirm that the shape you are trying to mask with is not a group (should be dashes, not the ants on a log outline)? This only works with single shapes and not grouped shapes.
Hi, I don’t have a mask anything. It is because I’m using the free trial?
The trial should include all features, it is not restricted. Masking requires an image and a shape, minimally, to apply.
Yeah, not sure what I’m doing! I’m on day three trying to figure it out. I did eventually figure something out and it worked!
@@JohnAndersen-ks4sl Do you have LightBurn in beginner mode? That might prevent masking.
If I put an offset around text, can this method be used to change the offset?
Generally, you can just add an additional offset to the original offset, but it might lose some detail in the process.
I would like to remove the center.
As I described in my comment then, make your masking shape (the center) and another shape around the entire image. Group the two shapes. You now have a shape that is the space between the center and the outside. Use this as your mask.
how do you mask the center of a picture?
Like, you only want to keep the center, or you want to remove the center? You can create a shape (lets say a "ring") and use that as your masking shape, and only the space between the inside and outside will be visible after masking.
