The Hang Gliding Files
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 ต.ค. 2021
We want to show the world that they can experience something of what it is like to fly real hang gliders using only modern flight simulators. In VR. We are real life hang glider pilots and will do or show nothing that is not like real life. Nobody has created anything close to what we envision, know deeply, so we are going to try and make that happen ourselves. Join us as we explore these possibilities on The Hang Gliding Files. We are on an adventure to find out if Virtual Reality hang gliding can be done up to our expectations. I want to believe. Join us, you may become a believer too.
Hang Glider Trikes
Introducing 2 new Trike ultralights. One is electric powered and the other is powered by a 2-stroke gas engine. One of these trikes can be used to aerotow hang gliders.

Just found your site and files. Amazingly great. Am in Oz, and noticed there's a lot of content covered here in your files. I can't seem to gain the Widget file/download? All links not working. File not found from your Onedrive etc.
Sorry about that. I did not know the links were not working. Not sure what happened. All links on the web site have been refreshed.
how to enable pilot visibility?
The pilot can not be seen in first person mode because the pilot is always moving (weight shift) and the eye position (what you see on screen in the cockpit) never moves. This cause the pilot to move into and out of view constantly while you are flying and that is not acceptable. Hopefully, one day, Asobo will provide the API to move the eye position using code. If you are NOT in first person mode (cockpit), you can see the pilot then. That includes drone, and any external view.
@@thehangglidingfiles6684 I already figured it out. I didn’t have a widget installed.With widget pilot&vario visible works
Hello, I am struggling with footlaunch. Pressing G for landing gear or whatever key I have assigned to "toggle tail hook handle'" won't do anything. I can only fly the glider if it is already airborne , but can't take off from a particular site nor can I groundhandle. I have the widget and both hang glider models installed. Could you please help me with that ?
Sure! You have mentioned that you have the Widget installed (latest is 4.0.2.5 and has ground handling updates). 1. You need a key (or button) assigned to the GEAR UP event. This is called SETDOWN and will stabilize the glider on the ground. 2. You need a key (or button) assigned to the GEAR DOWN event. This is called PICKUP and will allow you to move the glider in any direction using the JOYSTICK (walk). It will also roll down a slope (walking launch) until it reaches airspeed and launches. 3. You can map a key (or button) assigned to TOGGLE TAIL HOOK HANDLE event. This is called the LAUNCH BUTTON. Pressing it ONCE = WIRE MAIN MODE. This will fix the glider in place but allow it to weathervane and "fly" in the wind while remaining stationary. Good for windy launches. Pressing it more than once = RUNNING. This accelerates the glider forward and will get you off of a windy launch or any launch fast. NOTE: Gliders come in 2 flavors. Full feature and stand alone. Only Full feature gliders can be foot launched as they require the widget. Stand alone gliders cannot be foot launched as they do not require the widget. These gliders can only be started in mid-air and are basically a way for someone to try flying a hang glider without doing any real effort. REMOVE THE STAND ALONE VERSION from the community folder and you will be able to use the full feature glider.
Great, but when can we download it? And when will the swift be available?
You can download them now at www.patreon.com/TheHangGlidingFiles (go to Shop section) This is early access for our patreon supporters. You can be a paid member or free member. Paid members get all custom aircraft we make, now and in the future, for free. We have a discount code (get them for free using the code: ) on our Discord discord.com/channels/1021523907376844821/1288717019096551497 After we let our signed-up supporters get early access, we will release for free distribution on flightsim.to/ The Swift/Millenium/ATOS and many other gliders are in process! Part of the reason for doing the Trikes is to learn how to use engines (electric and motor) coding in MSFS 2020 aircraft. Now that we have some understanding of this, we can add them to things like the Swift to make an ESwift for example, or we can add a Trike base to any new HG wings we make. We are following a progression of releases that includes 3-axis controlled gliders. Next up is Pathfinder 2 (standard) and a U2 custom glider. This will introduce VG and variable geometry. Then we will do a Topless. Then a spoiler controlled (ATOS type). Then a Swift type. Then some really special gliders! I know everyone wants the Lamborghini on day one, but then there will only be Lamborghinis to drive and nothing else (see Sailplanes). This is a process and as I am the only person doing this, it is my process but I ask soaring pilots to come with me on this journey. I can't wait until we get MSFS 2024! Hang gliding simming will be especially epic in that release!
Super, mais on peut télécharger quand ? Et quand sera disponible le swift ?
It's almost like pilotwings
Simulated Hang Gliding in MSFS 2020 is actually complicated because nothing about it is normal according to standard aircraft simulations. Takeoffs can be from airports and/or from remote mountain sites, cliffs and beaches! Control is done via weight shift/CG changes and not 3-axis controls. This means the pilot moves relative to the entire aircraft during flight. That never happens in any other type of aviation. Aircraft type has no default for multi-user flights. Ground movement (walking/running/launching) must done using special code. To accomplish this, we had to write a LOT of software. Not all this software is installed into the community folder. Community Folder: WIDGET - everything you need to fly a hang glider in MSFS 2020 Finds a site (inside MSFS 2020 toolbar) Site teleportation Ability to foot launch and ground handle the glider (requires control mapping) Variometer and flight computer capable of using standard XCSoar type task files. Standard weather presets At least 1 standard glider for each glider classification. Currently contain just 1 but this will be updated over time. Custom Gliders We have 1 custom Glider available at this time. The WW Falcon 4. It can be downloaded from our website or flightsim.to. It is a free custom glider. It comes in 2 variations: Full Glider (works with the widget) Stand alone glider (does not need the widget but you can't foot launch it and it does not have a variometer). Tow Planes We have 1 custom Tow plane available at this time. The Bailey-Moyes Dragonfly. Standard tow planes in MSFS 2020 will not successfully tow a hang glider. This can be purchased from out patreon page: You can join for free, sign up as monthly patreon member to help us create more content (and get free access to all download content), or just simply purchase individual custom gliders at any time. www.patreon.com/home Custom flying sites We provide the ability to build custom flying sites that become actual airports within MSFS 2020. This is done using the THGF App (see below). We can build these sites or anyone can for that matter. Some of these sites are posted by us and other pilots on flightsim.to. Just download these zip files and install into the community folder. They usually come with 1 or more JSON files (database). These can be imported into your locate database app (See THGF app below). This will let you teleport to these sites using the widget. Desktop Apps: PC APP (THGF) This download from our website is a PC-Desktop application. You are downloading the install program. This application must be installed on its own and it has nothing to do with the community folder or MSFS 2020 directly. It is not required to fly hang gliders in the simulator at all. What it is, is a database of flying sites and the tools to create new flying sites as well as many other things. All modification to this database automatically update the MSFS 2020 widget (see above). Nice to see my HG sites in this video. The others look great too. Thanks
Nice surprise to see Newgale I submitted make an appearance. I really love how intimate simming feels with hang gliding. Keep up the good work!
Hi, I am wanting to use this as a basis for an actual simulator that mimics the bumps and jolts in rough air / thermals, and also has fan driven wind that reflects the true airspeed of the wing in real time. Are there any kind of outputs that can be made analogue such as airspeed, bank angle, climb / decent rate? Thanks:)
Sure. This could be done. There is some discussion of this on our Discord: Virtual Reality Hang Gliding. To get information from the sim (ambient air speed, true airspeed, bank, etc) is easily done using the Simconnect API interface supplied by the SDK. To output this information would require that you are running a standalone PC application that is outside the simulator itself as any code inside the sim will prevent it. Our PC application, THGF Desktop App, does this now and can be run concurrently while you are in the sim. Outputting these values via some mechanism (the how is up to you) can done the same as any PC app could do. They could be streamed on a socket, written to a file, output via some connection. Follow up on the Discord to work out the details.

Wonderful 😍
Hi friend, first congratulations on the channel! I'm a paraglider pilot looking to make a simulator using the Unreal Engine. How did you use the Flight Simulator engine to insert the hang glider into it? It looks much better with the whole environment ready
First, MSFS 2020 is really just a physics engine, inside an extremely good world simulator. Things in this simulator (planes of any kind) are just avatars of the math that describes them. Therefore, I just needed to provide the right values and it flies right. Second, the simulator itself is visually stunning so the avatar (model) must be as well, or it won't look right. I spend a lot of time on the details. One might think it does not matter, but the eye can see the difference easily. And last, never make it a game! The sport itself is the reason to do it and if you don't do that, you will fail.
@@thehangglidingfiles6684 That's the idea, to make our pilot's brain increasingly accustomed to the situation when there is no possibility of flying. But what did you do to get your hanggliding avatar placed in the flight simulator environment? Did you make contact with the Microsoft producers?

Superb work and very instructive video
Please tell me how I can start using the winch provided in the program. After I load into the GDP, my hang glider just stands still, thanks in advance
Not sure what steps you have taken but these will work. 1) choose a tow method BEFORE you start flying, any winch will do. 2) Spawn to any airport. You should see the rope in front of you. 3) Waggle the rudders to start. That could be pedals if you have them, or just twist your joystick left/right. 4) You can use the widget to spawn to any where, put if it is flat and you have done the above, you will not have a rope attached after spawning. Click the call for tow button on the basetube. This will attach you to a rope. Good to go.
Thank you very much, I did as you said and now there are no problems at startup.@@thehangglidingfiles6684
Please tell me what models of delaplanes are available, because the one presented in the widget differs from what is shown in the video in our videos, for example, a speed bar at all, it’s just useful for me to know for myself, since I want to fully devote myself to flying delaplane, and your site gives a complete overview and the opportunity to do this. Thank you in advance
Thanks for the question and it is just a little more complicated (as always) than it seems: 1) I am going to provide at least 5 different gliders inside the Widget over time (I have 1 now). One for every class of glider. Every hang glider pilot will then have at least 1 glider of every type. 2) I am going to build stand-alone custom gliders. Each of these will share most of their code with the base glider, but look different and have different features like control bars, sail patterns, harness types, etc. When you fly one of these with other pilots who do not have your special glider installed, they will see another hang glider (the base version) as opposed to seeing an airplane! 3) If you want something custom, Ask for it!!! We will probably build it for you. 4) Custom gliders will probably have a cost associated with them. Very little, like $5. Not all of that exists at the moment, so please be patient as we build this thing out. I do have our first custom glider coming out very soon and it has airfoil control bar, carbon fiber control bar, etc.
Thank you for the appropriate answer, of course, I will be looking forward to everyone regarding the news of this simulator, and I am also ready to provide some assistance in the form of a donation, to the best of my ability.@@thehangglidingfiles6684
It’s just great, I’m glad that you are developing this direction, if there is such an opportunity, then I would also like to make my small contribution to this matter. I’m also ready to buy a hang glider, even if it costs some money, I’m looking forward to that moment
Good afternoon, tell me how and where I can download the Hang Gliding Files Ground Support add-on?. After clicking on the link it says that the page was not found.
I am trying hard to make this whole process as easy as possible, but what I am making the Simulator do is quite contrary to what it was designed to do, so keep that in mind: The Widget software download contains everything you need to fly a hang glider inside the simulator. It contains the gliders, the variometers, the weather, sites to fly, and the ability to move your glider on the ground. Nothing more is needed. You do have to configure some controller mappings to sim-events to use the glider on the ground. Basically, it is just GEAR UP and GEAR DOWN and RUN (special event) to do the really necessary stuff. This should be on the web page: thehangglidingfiles.com If you want to build your own sites and add them to the database, we provide a tool for that: The THGF desktop app. thehangglidingfiles.com/downloads/category/software/msfs-2020-software/manage-site-database/
Thank you for doing this!!! It's awesome 😎
I hope you enjoy it. More to come soon!

@@DokHunter Thank you for trying it out! I am missing plenty of sites and local pilots know them best. If you make some new sites be sure to send them to me and I will add them to the database for future pilots too.

9:00 if you really want to experience hang gliding you need to do this, really? It's a video game. At the beginning you say that flying down a hill isn't really flying, but this is? I quite liked this video and i wouldn't mind trying the sim but come on, this is the plan the WEF has for us, no real life experience, everything you want without leaving the house, no thank you
I get your point! Trust me but hear me out. I have flown real-life hang gliders for 30+ years. I am relating to (and I guess you) others about my experiences via these communications tools. Hang gliding as a sport will soon not exist in real-life due to many factors, but the number 1 reason is no one talks about it. A thing must be talked about to spread to other humans and continue. Some portion of people who hear things, try things. That is real life and that is the mission. Another reason for this type of experience is context. 1 person cannot understand the words of another person's story without having the context of what is happening in that story. If I tell another pilot a story of my flying adventures and then I tell you the same story, the understanding of my story in your brain is not correct. You don't have context, so your brain makes up details (or misses doing so). Doing this in video format helps with that. What helps even more? Having someone get the personal context of a thing. VR hang gliding does this. It does not replace the real thing at all, in any way. It has no place in WEF plan as this sport serves no other purpose, other than what it is. It has not, nor will it ever, be the reason someone does not leave the house. If gaining perspective via technology scares you and/or you personally can't tell the difference, well. Enough said.
@@thehangglidingfiles6684 wow that was a long one and I appreciate it, although I didn't really understand some of your points, sorry. I think I get that what you mean is that thermals and other conditions are a fundamental part of the point of hang gliding and not just going down a hill? One point you are definitely wrong about is the WEFs plans, they will control every aspect of our lives, will not be allowed to travel, we'll have enough money to survive only and we will own nothing. All sports pass times, hobbies etc will be gone. These are facts that if people don't wake up to and take action, will happen for sure, well, for those of us that are spared. Sorry to pick up on a morbid subject but, there it is. Anyway, thank you, I will watch some more of your videos
@andymccann2716: In my VR experience every game / sim I've had fun with makes me want to go out and experience it for real. Also, beyond being fun, programs like this can be great tools for practice. That's why airline pilots train in simulators. (BTW I'm not a fan of the WEF either.)
@@thehangglidingfiles6684 Hi. I hang glided in the eighties so... great project! Now I'm training to paraglide. Hang gliding isn't dying because no one knows about it or talks about it. It's dying mainly due to lack of portability and maybe, to some degree, it looks harder - especially in landing softly. It's one thing to drive right up to a launch, setup and go, but more of a pain, literally, if one has to hike some. Many was the time I got a sore neck / shoulder shouldering 70 or 80 pounds up a mountain trial. Truck towing brings accessabilty but doesn't seem that widespread even fourty years after a safe method was perfected. Probably because one needs a crew, someone that isn't flying, and a specialized truck. Besides, as you know, there's nothing quite like the beauty and visceral thrill of foot launching from a mountain. Another thing that paragliding has going for it is that, to the un-iniated, it looks so very comfortable. And it is. We're seemingly magically float along in an easy chair - that can be stowed in the trunk of a car and taken out when the mood strikes. Plus all the gear, totaling about 40 (compact) pounds, can fit in a large duffle bag for airline travel. Me I'm retired and kicking around South America but when I settle somewhere, if there's a decent hang glider site around, I'd love to have an easier to land single surface hang glider to enjoy as well. We'll see.
Great work guys. I look forward to each new video you make.
Thanks Tom. My G2 cable has fried itself and it has been hard to replace, otherwise we would be doing more TFFE!!!! You have been doing great stuff too, Anyone interested in virtual hang gliding should check it out.

I'm an X-plane user. This project has made me purchase MSFS20. This is absolutely out of this world!! I've never seen such a complete and immersive simulation for hang gliding before, not in any other sim. I used to fly the C4 in FSX more than a decade ago, I had to build my custom launch sites, look for information on the web, and get a special tool made by Aerosoft to make good thermals. Now, I've got the entire world in ultra HD to try out and more wings to fly too!! I can't thank you enough for your videos and tutorials.
We started with FSX and the C4 too! You can see us doing videos from back in the day by looking at our old videos (cringe). We started by building out software to do exactly what you did, build custom sites, control the weather (we even had replay weather history from real weather). MSFS 2020, is essentially FSX under the hood but using AI to render a new world. Just 1 thing really. What you see today is a result of continuous progress on these same foundations over time and these will only continue into future releases like 2024. I have but one goal, produce an actual hang gliding simulation. No games. No cheats. As close as I can get. I shoot for the stars, but sometimes, I only get to the moon. As the simulator gets better, my simulation gets better, because I try to keep my shortcuts as short as possible. 2024 promises some very exciting upgrades.
Ric, loving your videos. Well done,
Looks a lot better now not having those arms/hands in the virtual ‘cockpit/pilots’ view 👍 I’ve been in X-Plane land the past couple months but will fire up MSFS this weekend and try your kites out. Thanks! 👍
I agree that removing the pilot in the cockpit view has been an improvement. You can still bring them back by putting the view in to FREELOOK mode by holding a mouse button down, using a game controller, or just toggling to that mode in the cockpit view mode dialog. Eventually, we should be able to just see our actual hands and arms in VR when flying, but until then, compromises and options.
Again a great video.Iám getting the hang for it (grin)Love this..Brings back me a lot of memory's when i was paragliding. So iám really happy with your work.In the video it shows a different glider i have dowloaded. Is this a new glider ans not available jet?
Yes. It is a custom glider. The Wills Wing Falcon 4. I am in the process of developing the infrastructure for developing custom gliders that can be flown and seen by others who do not own the same custom glider. Once I get that pretty good, I will be releasing custom gliders. They will be their own downloads and not part of the widget.
Perfect, just what I was looking for.
great, when are the swift and high performance deltas expected to be available?
They should be soon. Release 3.x will be intermediate and high-performance flex wings. They are very easy as they share virtually all of them same code tech. I will then move on to the ATOS type gliders (spoiler controls). This requires only new pilot animations and the spoiler animations. Then I will do a foot launched sailplane model (3 axis). This shares almost nothing with the others but is simpler to build. A version of each category will be part of the Widget tool for free and will then serve as the default glider(s) for multiplayer flights. Then on to custom gliders. The sky is the limit at that point.
@@thehangglidingfiles6684 Great, thank you for all this work. Even if it costs money for lr Swift and the Atos, I'm buying. Is there any plan to integrate THGF into the MSFS 2024?
Cool stuff.
This is a great installation guide that I could actually follow nicely step-by-step!
Thanks for that great tutorial!
Looking forward for the upcomming video's. As an older guy , it's sometimes difficult to understand all the neccesary steps to get it working as it should be.So yes! great there will be video's explaning all the info i need to become a hangglider.
Thanks, but don't feel bad about it being difficult. I am trying to make an airplane simulator - fly a flexible wing aircraft (the only one) - that is controlled by changing its center of gravity (not supported) - where the pilot cockpit position is dynamic (not supported) - that can foot launch or land anywhere - that flies slower than most aircraft can taxi - that the pilot is actually the most complicated piece of the aircraft (most don't even have a pilot, let alone one moves the controls, let alone IS the control stick) - that is not based on any standard aircraft in the entire simulator - and has to fly realistically or why bother. To make it possible, requires some effort on both our parts. I think I owe it to all pilots who attempt it as much information as I can give. It is hard, but worth it.
Agree !! it is great to soar like an eagle over beautiful landscapes.Thank to your hard work i can enjoy this so much .So huge thank you@@thehangglidingfiles6684
This is wonderful thanks for making it. Can you organise a community flight?
This is the goal. We are working towards that right now. The first thing we will do is just have an open flying day. We (THGF) will set a date/time and a flying site where we will be for a few hours. There will be no goal. There will be no task. We will just be at the site flying around, and answering questions of doing demonstrations. It is the simplest way for 99.99% of new pilots to join a group and not have to fiddle with all kinds of settings, meetup times, missing out, etc. We hope that leads the others doing the same. Just announce the date/time and site and see who comes out to fly.
