They're cute and all, and I do see them in media frequently, but my experience with the one I have is that he has quite the personality and is a wonderful companion. The baby schema definitely plays into the bond.

I would have liked to have seen more information about the health issues that frenchies (real or otherwise) have come under fire for recently. Breathing, neurological, and other "quality of life" issues. Your emphasis on "it's not a recognized color" didn't carry weight with me at first and was starting to get annoying until you started showing "standard" frenchies next to "designer" frenchies and you could see how the designer dogs have VERY different structures that likely go beyond just poor physical type and are in fact Frenchie Crosses being sold as purebred. But people -think- they're purebred so when these crosses end up with health issues, those problems get pinned on actual purebred Frenchies when the dogs in question weren't pure frenchies at all. THAT is a legitimate point and a big problem, but you took way too long to get to it.

Frenchies are a manufactured breed as the video said. Fro. The original English bulldog. This is breeder elitism at its worst.

Thank you for this information. I almost brought a chocolate a few months ago, However I changed my mind, Something didn't seem right to me. I found a great honest breeder and now I have a healthy ,adorable sweet French Bulldog ..

What a load of bullshit! Not a word about the whole breed being flat faced thus having difficulty of breathing. They are only trying to create new enemy: unethical breeders who want different colors when the whole breed makes ALL of them evil.

These dogs, for the most part, can not breed properly. Not to mention all kinds of other health issues, from back pain to eye problems. To put a "designer colour" on top, as in all breeds, creates "interesting" new problems - but can you really call yourself an "ethical breeder" if you breed a dog that is destined to suffer from shortness of breath their whole life? And no, the breed standard does not prevent this, as it calls for the very short and upturned nose. The medical problem is called "Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS)" because it comes from being brachycephalic, and that is what the standard calls for.

I have a beautiful "blue", 2.5 year old French Bulldog. I think this is a great documentary, even though I felt a bit defensive while watching. Noah is a glorious dog, a joy to everyone he meets. I wouldn't be without him and consider his existence to be valid. He is a kennel club dog with proven lineage. BUT, while he enjoys good health and clearly loves life, he does suffer from allergies, and this may be associated with his colour.

Great video. They are now crossing shar - pei with frenchie and called " big rope frenchies," have awful health and are not frenchies!! Its pure greed. These dogs need to be protected and kept true to breed.

My bigrope blue fawn merle french bulldog is 7 panel clear. It’s a shame that people assume all non-standard colors are unhealthy. My dog doesn’t snore. He is OFA certified. Not all non-standard colors are unhealthy. They were prejudice against Fawns before and now it’s a standard color. There is all kinds of hypocrisy in this video. None of these dogs are like the original from the 1800s.

@57 seconds - I see dogs with severly pinched nostrils. You try breathing through tiny slits for a while. @8:57 - you wanted a clean breed, and chose one that due to anatomical issues, can hardly keep itself clean. What is "clean" about a Frenchie? You often have to wipe their faces and butts far more often than most other breeds. They are also prone to digestive issues due to being brachycephalic and this makes them gassy, not "clean." Because of their flat faces and the standard calling for an underbite, they tend to have dental problems more often than mesocephalic breeds, and this can lead to a build up of tarter and bad breath, neither of which are "clean." @9:31 - Yes Frenchies that more conform to the standard have a higher incidence of spinal abnormalities than non-champions in Finland according to Koiranet data. I'm a third in, and we haven't discussed yet why the Frenchie needs to be bred with a severely brachycephalic skull, an underbite and a screw tail. Nor what "good breeders" intend to do about the breed being fixed for the DVL2 gene. @9:43 - Yep instead of addressing the problems inherent to the breed standard, we'll just start attacking "color" breeders. Too bad that when the data is actually examined, these "CNR" (color not-registered) Frenchies actually have a slight advantage in heath outcomes compared to the "preservation" bred dogs. - crowdpleazerfrenchies.com/blog/f/whos-health-testing-their-frenchies and crowdpleazerfrenchies.com/blog/f/health-test-results-nbs-vs-preservationist-ofa?blogcategory=French+Bulldog+Health. The only color you can reasonably say "adds health issues" is merle, and this goes for all merle breeds. But "preservation breeders" tend to not mind when breeds that have merle in them are affected by conditions caused by merle colors, only if the color came from a mix. @11:01 - Expresses frustration that these CNR frenchies are being registered - well take it up with the kennel clubs that profit from them and mills. @11:27 - Keeps talking about "quality" and a lack thereof but what makes a quality dog? As mentioned above, a higher chance of spinal abnormalities? Which this video STILL hasn't addressed? The slits for nostrils on the dogs that have such high "quality?" Quality in dogs is subjective, but could be objectively measured in part by looking at health outcomes and traits that confer good health as opposed to traits that cause problems like the screwtail gene. @12:21 - Too bad "good" breeders continue to ignore the effects of high COIs, do not prioritize selecting for good free whelpers, open nostrils, an ability to swim well (something all dogs should be able to do), freely go up and down stairs without fear of an IVDD attack etc. The French Bulldog is an extremely exaggerated breed. Yes making them hairless will of course make them more exaggerated, but let's not pretend this breed isn't highly exaggerated. In the case of French Bulldogs, the standard is the source of their health issues. @20:39 - Since when does merle increase the rate of allergies? Going to need a source for that one. This is repetitive and not factual. @21:30 - How about the "careful" breeding of Wyndlair Avalanche and Shadow Hill’s Polaris? Both double merle top studs in the Collie and Sheltie world respectively. Many breeders were all too happy to use these dogs at stud despite them being intentionally bred to be homozygous for merle. The hypocrisy of the fancy is on full display - despicable for frenchie breeders to do, but totally ok if collie or sheltie "preservation" breeders do it. @22:00 - It is not sustainable to breed only "pure" Frenchies longterm. Eventually the breed struggles with fertility and lifespan issues like we see in Berger Picard and Norwich terriers. What is a purebred? The Basenji has roots with Country of Origin dogs (COO) that might not be "pure" but we still call them purebred. The concept of a "breed" is a human concept, not a scientific one. @27:17 - Repeating something doesn't make it true. Again, you haven't bothered to address the underbite, brachycephalic skull, the effects of the DVL2 gene (a consequence of breeding to the standard), the screwtail etc. None of this benefits the dog's welfare at all, it affects the quality of life in greater ways than a dog being blue does. @29:23 - You're going to have to cite your sources for a "preservation" breeder producing healthier dogs. The data is just not there, and for a few different breeds, shows no benefit to going to a "preservation" breeder over a "byb" in terms of health. Really just came down to "breed standard colors because FCI and we said so, and fad colors are bad even though that's mostly incorrect." What a waste of 30 minutes.

This is an excellent presentation of the current situation and issues with this beloved breed. PLEASE DO YOUR HOMEWORK potential frenchie owners. Do NOT breed against the standards. They are there for a reason. Preservationist breeders are the TRUE RARE breeders, not these color breeder$.

I have dedicated over 4 years of my life researching and educating myself about this breed as well and pugs and bulldogs. I have a TikTok account dedicated to the proper education of the breeds.
