Welcome to Monsville Railways
This channel shows the progressive development and building of my Model Railways along with running the various locomotives as my collection grows.
The processes shown are ones that I have developed from watching many TH-cam channels on model railways and terrain and diorama development and adopting the techniques that work best for the way that I build. These processes are explained in detail later in the video list so stay tuned to see how I approach the terrain surfacing of my layouts.
Also included are snapshots of Tri-ang, Tri-ang Hornby and Hornby catalogues for many of the locomotives shown on my layouts.
Many of the buildings on the layout are 3d printed and painted as the development of the layout progresses.
The style of the layouts are generally a medieval, steam punk type look with some Steam punk locomotives appearing part way through the build and video list.
Each Video Part is approximately covering one month in development.

Great video once again Have a great weekend Mike
Thanks Mike. It is pretty easy to keep the old girls running. And always satisfying to have 60 plus year old trains working well on your layout. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated. 👍 Enjoy your weekend.
Great job at keeping these models running ,
@@midsomerrailwaynscale Thanks Greg. The oldies are often the easiest to maintain. I do get a kick out of running loco's that are older than me. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated. 👍
Excellent video, well done. Always enjoy watching your projects, keep up the good work!
Thanks Bob. More projects coming soon. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated 👍
geweldig dat de treinen weer lopen als nieuw ,mooie om te zien ,top werk , groetjes ian👍
Thanks Ian. Yes, a little oil and they are back in action. So simple to maintain these old girls. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated 👍
Always good to see you keeping these models alive...cheers James 🙂👍
Thanks James. The thing is that they were made to be serviced, so in trueth they are pretty simple to keep in good working order. I like the fact that many of these old girls are older than me and yet are still running. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated 👍
@monsvillerailways5736 I've got a couple of really old locos in a box at my sons, I must get on to him to find them out 🙂👍
Definitely do that. As long as you can still run DC on your layout, they'll be a nice addition to your collection. Happy Trains
Hello Mons I hope your well Great work keeping these classic models going, never seen those couplers before ive just been upgrading some of mine.
Hey Deano. Trix/Hornby Dublo couplers or Hornby tension lock? I guess that when you work with vintage trains you get to see vintage couplers. 🤔 Have a great weekend.
@monsvillerailways5736 hey Mons, I have upgraded them to magnetic couplings video coming soon
Will watch for that Deano 👍 I've stayed with originals to keep the units more authentic. Happy Trains
It definitely has its charm and some nice repairs to add to the table!
@@ModelTrainOutsider Thanks Anthony. The beauty of the early electric motor is its simplicity and ease of maintenance. It is always nice to get them back in fully working order. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated 👍
Another few nice locos back up and running once again and some wagons repaired..
@@TimsBitsnPieces Hi Tim. Yes, Classics back in motion. Always a good thing. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated 👍
Great video! These old Triang look great!
@@railway187 Thanks Erik. The old girls are so easy to maintain. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated 👍
More good results Mon. Great to these old trains still running.
Thanks David. These old girls often just need a drop of oil on bearings, and Drive Worm to give them a new lease of life. So simple to do with such a great result. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated 👍
Just noticed that hopper car is the same as the old one jouf in france sold as a ballast wagon
Hi Clive. That makes sense given the opening bottom doors. Another donated item back on the rails. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated 👍
Great, you're keeping that vintage stuff going👨🔧🚂🚂🚃🚃🚉
Thanks so much. Yeah, most of my Trains are vintage and still running at 60 plus years old. Simple electric motors are easy to keep going. Thanks for watching and commemting. Always appreciated. 👍
very nice layout great trains running
Thanks Dwight. Old loco's running on old steel track. Easy to maintain and lots of fun. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated 👍
Great update. That little steam locomotive is cool!
Happy New Year to you both. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated 👍
Very nice. The couplers you use are much different than the one's we use over in the U.S. Neat seeing the differences. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks John. The Trix/Hornby Dublo couplers are getting harder to obtain, but the Tri-ang/Hornby couplers are much more available. I've tried to replace the ones in this video with what was used originally. It is good to see old wagons etc back on the track. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated 👍

Well, the video made that seem a relatively easy fix for a nice new steamer (8F) on the layouts! Very cool.

I've been loooking at lighting. I was debating between the white and RGB pancake lights for my basement. You just convinced me to go with the RGB.
@@wanndanneisenbahn Hi Erich and Willie. Apparently RGBW is the way to go for more natural lighting colours. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated.👍 Have a great weekend.
Do a spotlight down low like a sunrise with big shadows
@@LowriseEagle thanks for that. I'll have to see if I can incorporate that some how. 👍 A bit hard when its a lighting strip suspended above the layout, but there is probably a way. 🤔 Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated 👍
that looks really great. Well done.
@@goarmysleepinthemud. Thanks so much. Glad you liked it. The colour experiment really was interesting, although most of the colours don't give a realistic environment look. Maybe only 3 will be used regularly. Thanks for watching and commemting. Much appreciated. 👍
Interesting video, I'll bet you can achieve some nice lighting by mixing the colours... Cheers James 😊👍
@DYLINGTONMODELRAILWAY Thanls James and Dylan Happy New Year. I have a substitute controller for the lights so the colours shown were the limit of what I can achieve. There are probably only 3 useful colours unfortunately. I'll try to source another controller to experiment with. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciated. 👍
the different lighting is cool
@@KerleyExpress Thanls Dwight. All a big experiment Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated. 👍
A most interesting video - thanks for sharing. I've worked a lot with RGB LED systems over the years and - TBH - have really come to dislike them (sorry) for anything other than effects lighting. To begin with: their colour rendition is appalling - the individual LEDs emit light on such a narrow band of the visible spectrum that, even when combined to produce 'white', they really mess with the colours of the objects they're lighting and produce a completely unrealistic effect. That said: the sparing and judicious application of RGB effects lighting within the layout, to create features such as commercial signage or maybe a fairground could really make a layout 'pop'. If you *really* want to experiment with colour mixing LEDs for general layout lighting, then at least consider RGB*W* products which incorporate white LEDs, bearing in mind that Cool White will give a better daylight effect than Warm White. Please also note that the 'wrong' type of green, when combined with red, will produce muddy-looking yellows and ambers; also that it is the green LEDs which have the shortest lifespan, so ambers will suffer in the long term. This can be mitigated by using RGBA (or RGBAW) products, which incorporate amber LEDs, although such products are less common and harder to find. For a more realistic effect, which simulates the way natural light changes as the day passes (warmer in the morning and evening, cooler in the middle of the day), try experimenting with 'tunable white' LED lights, which combine both Warm and Cool White LEDs that can (with the appropriate controller) be mixed and cross-faded. Be sure to get LEDs with a high Colour Rendition Index (CRI) of at least 90 and put them behind a frosted or opal diffuser, in order to get the most realistic effects. To simulate indoor lighting with LEDs: bear in mind that most commercial premises and workplaces are lit with a colour temperature of 4000K (Kelvin), which could also be used for street lighting. Homes are generally lit with 3000K sources, or 2700K if you want to create a cosy feeling. I hope that helps - happy modelling 😀
@@wowbaggertheinfinitelyprol6262 Thank you so much for this helpful insight into the use of LED's. This information is genuinely appreciated. As you can see, this is all an experiment for me and, although the colours may be incorrect, I am excited by the possibility of adding mood and ambiance to the layouts. Showing the different colours produced by these cheap RGB LED's is nothing more than an experiment to see what light is produced and how the camera interprets it. The Light Blue to me is a good starting point for a Moonlit feel, especially with the contrast of the building and street lighting I've installed thus far. I'll reread your advice many times to try to understand the depth of your message. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Truely appreciated. Mon
Hi Mons... Some of those colours really saturate the camera.. Mainly the Blue and Red
@@TimsBitsnPieces Hi Tim. Yes, part of the experiment was to see how the camera interpretted the colours. Other colours came out as washed out too. I'll need to play with the camera settings to see if I can adjust this. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated 👍
Hello Mons Happy New Year I've been thinking of doing that exact same thing on my Marklin layout. Looks really good 👍
Thanks Deano. It is a great way to add ambiance to your layout and not really very expensive. The experiment for me was to see what colours worked best and how the camera interpretted them. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated 👍
Nice, Something I will expiriment with on my layout to give day night weather effects, though my older cameras don`t show colours well
Thanks Clive. Indeed, finding out how the cameras I use interprets the different colours was part of the test. With your undetstanding of electronics, installing these would be pretty straight forward one would think? Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated 👍
A very interesting experiment Mon. There were certainly some very useful lighting effects. As I struggle to get a good daylight effect I found the plain yellow to be what I'm looking for but others would be very useful too.
Thanks David. Indeed it was useful to see the different colours and how the cameras i use for filming interprets them. Many of the colours are not useful, but there are a couple that will get used regularly moving forward. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated 👍
Very nice. Love the colour changes.
Thanks so much. Deffinitely an interesting experiment. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated 👍
Great video mon
Thanks Digger. Happy New Year. Worth playing with the lights to see which works best. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated 👍
Hiya, Mon! That was a very cool video, and the effects were quite interesting. I loved how you changed the conditions to get all effects. The first set with external lights, red gave a fantastic feeling of night, and the blue gave a great sense of pre-sunrise morning to my eyes. The same was true when you had the layout lights on but no external. The greens, yellows, and purples were harder to place as natural lighting, but, of course, we are interpreting this through a camera lens. The pulse was just cool. Quite an experiment and makes me want to do this in our basement, but I am not sure how Joyce would react. lol
Thanks Anthony. It was certainly an interesting experiment to find the colours I prefer using. The camera changes some.of the colours compared to being here in person. The external lighting made a difference too so the idea was to walk the viewer through each range. The Light Blue looked to me like a moonlit night, as pointed out by a friend. I think that White and Light Blue might get used the most. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated 👍
