The reward center, focused around a brain region called the ventral striatum, releases "feel good" chemicals when we do something that helps us survive and reproduce. Sometimes, as is the case with addiction, these brain regions become overactive in response to non-useful stimuli. In the brain, dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter-a chemical released by neurons (nerve cells) to send signals to other nerve cells. The brain includes several distinct dopamine pathways, one of which plays a major role in reward-motivated behavior. Frequent gamers have much larger ventral striatums. This larger brain region could mean that the brain of a gamer releases more dopamine.
According to the Center for On-Line Addiction, warning signs for video game addiction include:
Playing for increasing amounts of time
Thinking about gaming during other activities
Gaming to escape from real-life problems, anxiety, or depression
Feeling irritable when trying to cut down on gaming
