The How NOT To Make A Movie Podcast celebrates collaboration... and what happens when good collaboration goes horribly off the rails. When filmmaking craft turns to crap.
In Season One, we told the behind the scenes horror story of making "Tales From The Crypt Presents Bordello Of Blood", a movie no one making it wanted to. In Season Two, we're expanding the franchise! Everyone in show biz has a horror story or two just like ours. This is the place to come and enjoy them!

Way, way back in season two, we sat down with screenwriter extradordinare, our good friend STEVE DE SOUZA. Steve kinda invented the MODERN ACTION MOVIE. He wrote the scripts for 48 HOURS, COMMANDO, STREET FIGHTER and, of course, DIE HARD. Die Hard set a new gold standard for action movies. If ever a movie, its hero and the actor hired to play them achieved perfection together, Die Hard did it That was almost in spite of itself. Bruce Willis Like Bogie getting Rick in CASABLANCA, BRUCE WILLIS getting cast as John McClane was a happy accident. Die Hard was […]

The short answer is “The Dads From the Crypt Podcast“. One of the main reasons there’s a “How NOT To Make A Movie Podcast” is because there’s a Dads From the Crypt Podcast. S3E48: Brandon Routh's Been Thinking

Our good friend Brandon Routh is one of those “thoughtful actors”. Some, by contrast, are more intuitive. They let their guts and gut instincts guide them and their creative choices. Early Christmas BONUS EPISODE - Have You Met THE DONOR?

It turns out starting The How NOT To Make A Movie Podcast set a lot of things in motion and opened a lot of damned doors. The most exciting of those newly opened doors is the opportunity to tell some mind-blowing stories in this medium that I have truly come to love. So, I started a little podcasting company. Costard & Touchstone Productions. The first C&T original production is a podcast calle...
I could listen to these guys talk about Tales for Hours. I love this.
Thank you sooooooo much for the very kind words!
Steven went to Neshaminy High School Langhorne Pa. He lived in Levittown Pa.
Thank you, I have been waiting many years for this , this script is great and would have been a real treat for Crypt fans. As a huge Crypt head your podcast is a real gem. Thanks for illuminating my childhood and my adult hood with that amazing show.
Thank you soooooooooooooo much for the very, very kind words. The podcast is a labor of love, but it's started something I never saw coming (but I'm thrilled to pieces that it is): a whole podcast producing company. In addition to The Donor: A DNA Horror Story (now out), we'll be dropping a really compelling true crime podcast (told from the inside) called "The Hall Closet" starting in December. We'll drop "Prisoner Ex With John Kiriakou" (about people in prison but who shouldn't be) and "Sage Wellness Within" (a podcast about traditional Chinese medicine) starting in January - and then one new podcast series every month thereafter. Hopefully a few of them will touch that same spot inside of you that Crypt touched!
The most redundant analysis I've ever seen.
I swear this podcast was made for me. Thank you guys where can I find episode 2 or find them in order?
Hi - and sorry for the late, late, really late reply - you can find everything "The How NOT To Make A Movie Podcast" at our website - how-not-to-make-a-movie.com/ We do need to do a little housekeeping here.
@ big thank you
I'll throw my hat into the ring, here's about fifteen movies that I love since that's a good amount: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Pacific Rim Road To Perdition The Green Mile Exorcist III: Legion Thief (1981) Die Hard The Good, The Bad and the Ugly The 13th Warrior The Incredibles Avengers: Infinity War The Northman How To Train Your Dragon The Land Before Time Heat (1995)
Great podcast! I didn't all this stuff about this movie!
We're glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for listening!
@@boyndog You're welcome 😁.
I didn't expect to see Dennis Miller in the thumbnail of your video.
Dennis agreed to pose for a formal portrait. The likeness is astounding, isn't it?
@boyndog Ironically it's also a portrait of Stephen King.
As always, Tyler, you are too, too kind. But, we'll accept your kindness any time!
Roger is back! Another great conversation, enjoyed his many insights. This podcast is a real treat. Best hosts, best team in the business!
Joe’s pink 🤔 White man coming in the store asking for spaghetti smh DONT WORRY SIR THIS RESTRAINING ORDER I GET THIS WEEK IS GONNA FORCE YOU TO STOP HARASSING ME!!!!! Big ass kid just a big ass kid 🤷🏽♀️
I absolutely adore Shaun of the Dead. See, Robert Zemeckis and Peter Jackson were huge inspirations to me of how inventive you can be with spectacle in storytelling - Edgar Wright made storytelling its own spectacle by crafting style into the edit, camera, and the homage and self-referential, layered, writing. Raimi obviously being another auteur of visual styling in storytelling, has always delighted me. We're spoiled with visionary directors. Edgar, to me, feels like a guy making an intricate puzzle box with his films.
I'd add Guy Ritchie into that club of dynamic visual storytellers. I meant to mention him in the episode.
@@TheDonorPodcast oh absolutely :)
Well done in this interview, relaxed and real! Thank you both for your hard work!
This is AMAZING. Thank you so much for the gift of this interview. @brandonjrouth Thank you for your courage and vulnerability.-Virginia M.
We are truly glad you enjoyed it!
I LOVE Rita
Me, too!
Malcolm said it - only scratched the surface. I really hope you get him back for another conversation, ideally with Gil in the mix haha.
Such a cool cast gathered for the table read. Dead Easy seems really rad. Is there any path to making it now?
I suspect the legal costs to figure out the rights would be more than the movie's actual budget. The first challenge would be to find the original screenplay's author. JP Kelly has become a person of total mystery.
@@TheDonorPodcast It would be such a special project. I hope you're able to do a film project that can be a bit of a reunion/tip of the hat to the Crypt legacy. It would be so cool to have John Kassir and Kevin Yagher involved, anyone from the table read(I adore Sean Astin), Sherrie Rose would be fun, oh man so much good!!
Much like a rotting corpse, that was juicy!
Yet another brilliant episode I can’t get enough of these
Thank you, Dawson!
I've never heard Astronomy from Blue Oyster Cult but I absolutely LOVE the Metallica version off of Garage Inc from 1998. They can't have butchered it too bad when it's that GOOD! ;)
Wow that was terrorific!
What a great time. Another fantastic guest that has to come back!
You can’t fool me, that’s just Billy Zane in a cool beard.
Wicked fun! Absolutely drag those guys back for another episode!
It’s cool to be safe! The situation with Baldwin, being the scapegoat for this tragedy, is bewildering.
It's like not understanding a military chain of command when you blame a soldier for what the whole platoon did wrong.
That was a fun conversation, glad she could come back and finish the chat. Maybe she can come back for an official second appearance? :)
Is there going to be an episode that will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Tales From The Crypt TV show (June 10th)?
Yes - but later in June!
Dead Easy is better than BORDELLO OF BLOOD.
No argument!
There are a lot of bad movies out there. Dollar-for-dollar, _Cleopatra_ (1963) is probably worse that _Caligula,_ but isn't nearly as dirty. _Plan 9 from Outer Space_ is the worst low budget film ever made (there's a reason Ed Wood is named in the video), but the producers spent money like drunken sailors making Caligula. So, yes, _Caligula_ is perhaps _the worst dirty movie ever made._
bordello of blood was amazing!!
I won't argue. I might argue though about why it's amazing. I think it's amazing I survived making it!
The dirty secret of filmmaking is that making a good movie is only 10% harder than making a bad one. I should have asserted that making a bad movie is _harder_ on the filmmaker, but that would require extra discussion. Making a movie is _difficult;_ any one sucks by default. The fact that any one by them has the property of making you want to see it, let alone multiple times, let alone to become a fiscal success or even a social meme, is rare. And these are the ones that actually get started _and_ finished _and_ distributed. Think I am either jaded or exaggerating? I recommend reading the book _Tales From Development Hell_ by Hughes. Oh yes: I saw _Caligula_ at its premiere, and once owned the collector´s box set of all its versions.
Saw it twice, both times on VHS. The first time I was rather inebriated, hence the second viewing. Malcolm McDowell was great, of course. The sex was actually boring- the wedding gift scene, the menagerie of ladies…self caring, the rest- meh. It was just over the top In everything and just became boring. The end was both disturbing and welcomed (excepting the kid- that was nightmare inducing). Would I recommend anyone watch it? Nope. Go for walk instead.
I've only seen the highly edited R-rated cut of Caligula, but it was definitely a worthwhile viewing. Some very interesting performances, and the coliseum scenes with bizarre murder devices are truly wild and one-of-a-kind.
Strangely enough, the R-rated version feels (ever-so-slightly) more coherent as you watch it - if only because the sex scenes aren't so pointlessly extended.
I can tell you there were many a couple accosted by the Baltimore county police, outside the pikesville theatre, for lufe and lascivious behavior. Thats why my wife and i parked one parking lot over. Wow! Y'all fill in the blanks
Anneka Vasta RIP murdered.
Most think it was a suicide, she never really recovered of this movie and before she died her life was in a tail spin, definitely sad.
There were some fine performances, particularly from Malcolm McDowell. The research was more than a bit outdated as the reign of Gaius was documented by Romans with an eye to telling the Senatorial "clique" and the emperors of the day what they wanted to hear and how great and good they were compared to 1st century AD emporers.
Inthe 70s there where some "" strange "' movies Q From Passolini { salo } or Frreri ! Last Tango and some more It was an interesst time ! And Caligula is not so bad as you say .....
Last Tango is a very good movie. Brando is both self indulgent and amazing in it. Passolini was was pretty out there, too - agree!
Oh this is art, the cast was brilliant. Although not for everyone.. Might I suggest? That search out Gore Vidal Caligula. i’ve only seen a trailer. But I would sell my soul to watch that movie.🎟️
I would, too!
This was great, the lunch story was a rollercoaster! 😅
Thank you! I still get a little sick to my stomach when I think about it!
This would have been an amazing Crypt film. Such a damn shame they couldn't just let you guys do this one and maybe line up some other director for Bordello (Bordello should have just been some sleazy direct to video thing and Dead Easy/Fat Tuesday should have been the theatrical follow up to Demon Knight) The Harlequin villain was awesome. I hope that someday the rights issue will be handled so that you guys can finally get your redemption by filming or producing this. This just feels more in line with classic EC which I really dig!
I have an idea to do a new take on Dead Easy. What are your thoughts?
Our minds are always open! The biggest problem with Dead Easy is the rights - and figuring out who owns them at present. It sure would help if we could locate the script's original author - J P Kelly. Still, like I said - our minds are open.
@boyndog Here are overall five notes that I have as potential producer: 1). The title will be changed from Dead Easy to Fat Tuesday since it's a much more striking and effective title. 2). The movie will feature grotesque, voodoo-type swamp zombies as the Harlequin's minions to add more genuine threat to the scenario. 3). A couple new characters will be in it but each of them will have their purposes and roles. 4). The main setting for the movie will be a large New Orleans mansion that's ironically almost Tales From The Crypt-esque. 5). The violence will be vicious and brutal since that's the violence and gore that I go for. Thoughts?
@@burningexeter4365 The only problem with changing the title from Dead Easy to Fat Tuesday is that "Fat Tuesday" is the script's original title - and that's where the project would crash into rights issues. All your other ideas take the movie further away from the original script - which would be essential to getting a new version made. Adding layers to the Harlequin (giving him minions for instance) would also take this further from the original.
Great stories Gil and Al. This podcast is very entertaining
Thank you for the very, very, VERY kind words!!!
Hi! Thank you for this video! A question: still doing conventions this year? If you are, here are the five I am closest to. Texas Frightmare Weekend, crypticon Kansas city, OKC horror con, Memphis monster con, and Tulsa horror con.
In my mind, Tales From The Crypt Presents Demon Knight takes place in the same universe as plenty of other media.
It's a very worthy theory! Or, as the Crypt Keeper would put it, there's plenty of meat on dem bones!
@@boyndog The other media consists of Oz, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Sons Of Anarchy, Overlord (2018), Monster (2004 - 05), Thief (1981), Heat (1995) and Inglourious Basterds among many others.
The Wire hooks in because I grew up in Baltimore... @@burningexeter4365
