Kadirur Surya Narayana Temple is a prominent Hindu temple, situated 8 kms from Thalassery. Kadirur is abbreviated from the word Kadiravapuram means “the land of Sun”.
According to legend, the temple traces its roots to the Ramayana. It is believed that Lord Rama, on his way to Lanka in search of Goddess Sita, consecrated the idols of Lord Subramanya in Makreri and Peralassery temples. When the Vedic Brahmins living in Kadirur came to know about this, they went into meditation. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Rama came to Kadirur and blessed them. As he felt the presence of the Sun God in the land, Lord Rama installed the idol of Lord Surya Narayana here.
Another version of the story is that Sage Agastya Muni gave Aditya Hridayamantram [a hymn glorifying the Sun God] to Sree Rama as he stood confused at this place, during the battle with Ravana. After chanting this hymn three times, Sree Rama defeated Ravana, and upon this success, he came at Kadirur and consecrated the idol of Lord Surya Narayana.
The mural paintings and the darushilpam [wooden sculptures] over the sanctum sanctorum are admired by both believers and art enthusiasts.
