RTHB Day 13 | Gaggia Classic Pro & DF64V - Last Coffee Before a Little Break (POV)
Welcome back to EduArt Coffee! ☕
It’s Day 13 of the Road to Home Barista, and today’s video is a bittersweet one-it’s the last coffee for a week as I’ll be taking a short break. Here’s what I worked on before leaving:
What’s in this video?
Testing a 1:2.5 ratio (15g in, 37.5g out): is it espresso or lungo?
Considering switching from WDT to a blind shaker-stay tuned for the comparison!
Working on better milk steaming to avoid large bubbles.
Progress with latte art: getting more consistent with hearts.
💬 Let’s talk coffee!
What’s your favorite roast level (light, medium, or dark)? Comment below-I’d love to hear your preferences!

Isn't a 17 sec shot very short? Idk if it works different in this machine or your particular recipe
Start steaming your milk a bit before the actual indicator light of the steamwand turns red. This way you’re able to maintain steam pressure for longer. What also helps is to fill you pitcher with milk right when you start your workflow and let it sit in the fridge until you start steaming the milk. This to be able to aerate better and steam longer
Thanks for the comment and the tips! About the steaming indicator. My gaggia classic pro has a pid installed. It get's rid of the steaming pressure problem. So i don't need to start the steaming before the light turns on because the pid controls the steaming temperature and it ensures it stays low enought to not lose pressure :)
Everyday better
What is the purpose of wetting the coffee beans?
Stops static and makes for a better grind.
Hey, thanks for the comment ! It's a technique called RDT, i don't know all the science behind it, but it helps reducing static during the grind and decreases coffee retention inside the grinder
@eduartCoffee Thank you for explaining the process.
love the process!!! looks great
Thanks so much!
Takes way to long for me, but still really cool.
Hey thanks for the feedback! What feels long to you?
@@eduartCoffee nothing with the video, just personally the progress for making an espresso like this would be too long.
Oh okay got it! It may be a little longer than pushing a button, but coffee tastes waaaay better, it doesn't even feel like the same drink, and the feeling of drinking the espresso you made with your own hands is amazing. Would recommend trying at least once !
Tastes the same or worse then Folgers lol.
Definitely better :)
Since youre using a puck screen, theres absolutely no reason to rub the shower screen after you flush. Key thing to keep it clean is flushing for about 3-5s after each extraction. Also, avoid using the same cloth for everything... Have a separate towel for the steam wand/milk, as it tends to get dirty and smelly way sooner. Another thing is that your shower dispersion looks like a bit of clogging because of lime/calcification. I suggest getting an espresso detergent, doing some backflushes, and leaving the shower screen and group plate submerged in the solution for a couple of hours to see if it gets better. Maybe a full decalcification?
Hi there! Thanks for your feedback really appreciate it! About the shower head, i noticed it, tried backflushing the machine, and tried cleaning it by submerging it in the solution. But i only left it in there for 10 minutes. I plan on doing a proper cleaning when i get back, i'll see if it helps. If not yeah i gotta do the decalcification, it needs it, last owner said last decalcification was a while ago
@eduartCoffee specially in places with heavier water, it is important to keep track of your machine's flow rate. Not sure if it's gonna be helpful now, but once you do the decalcification, measure how long it takes to fill 50-100g of water. Then, you can repeat that and compare the durations. If it starts dropping, then it's time to do decalcification again!
Okay i'll keep that in mind. Note that i don't use tap water. I use store bought water, to avoit all the minerals in tap water, specially here in Romania i don't really know what's in there
This shot looks superb!!
Beautiful!!
Coolness!
Super cool!!! 👍☕️
Thanks!
Get the subminimal flick wdt. I think its awesome and handy
I will definetly check that out! Thanks!
Nice video!!! But please treat yourself with a fancy cup, so you don’t have to ruin the crema and the aesthetics of the rest of the video!! 😊
Thanks! I am never using that cup again. Don't worry i learnt from my mistakes! 😅
@ haha love it!!
Nice
You know I always just ask is it seriously worth it?(For reference I never enjoyed coffee as all of it back in my parent's house is so powerful to the point where even milk and sugar ain't enough to stop its bitterness)
If your question is, is it worth it to go trough all this trouble to drink coffee. Than my answer is, completely yes! I enjoy every second of the process and every sip of coffee (Not the oat milk, i don't like that at all, those are for my wife)
Try with different milk 🥛 😊
Hi! Thanks for the comment! What kind of milk should i try?

Workflow is good, but you are painfully slow.
Thanks for uour feedback. I'm sure with time i will get faster but theres a lot to learn 😊
@@eduartCoffee I have thought again about what I wrote and would like to apologize. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you are, the important thing is that you have fun. Being a barista should be something we bond over and enjoy, so I look forward to following your progress. All the best. :)
It's ok i didn't take it in a bad way. I can confirm that i'm having lots of fun! ☺️

Hi I'm from Malaysia, I love watching your day by day barista video. I'm also on my on becoming a barista. Good luck to both of us😊
@@bryantanjunyen1843 Wow, hello Malaysia! Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment. Good luck to both of us indeed! ☺️
Same here, we'll struggle together. I can pull shots okay but it's the latte art part that gets me. Sometimes I have better days but most times they are terrible. I think I got the milk texture now but my pouring skill is so poor.
nice setup! I'm using the same machine, you might want to try to start steaming after 6-7 seconds after you pressed the steaming button, no need to wait for the light to turn on, for me this improved the steaming a lot also I think your showerscreen needs a wash, I don't think it should be spraying water like that. Keep it up LE: i just realized you have a PID installed so nevermind :D
Thanks for the comment. Yeah PID solves the steaming problem :). About the shower screen, definitely needs a good wash. I tried washing it a few days ago but i rushed it a little and problem came back. Will clean it really soon. (I talk a little about that in my next video coming out today :))
반갑습니다. 기게는 직접 업그레이드 하셨나요?
Nice to meet you too! I didn't upgrade the machine myself. I bought it like that.
Well done!) i really like your stile of video. Keep it up!

I am curious about your group head. The water flow is so nicely spread when it flows. Have you changed the opv spring, perhaps? I asked the question before but still intrigued
Thanks for your comment! Opv spring was changed by previous owner. I bought it like this.
The important thing is how it tastes! That espresso shot looks great, makes my mouth water!
Did you change the grind setting at all, you mentioned in the Day 11 that you might coarsen it?
As to my setup…nothing great at all. Still have a blade grinder 😱 but saving for a burr grinder, currently using Janes Hoffmann's hack to try and get as best a grind as I can from it. Last couple of days I have given the Moka pot a rest and have been using a French press.
@@shamwari172 thanks a lot! I don't remember quite well if i changed anything (the video was filmed a few days ago). I might have coarsen it half a notch but it isn't a big change. The change is that i went down to a 1:2.5 ratio. That improved the shot a lot
James Hoffman not Jane! Typing is hard in an iPad!
@@eduartCoffee Thanks for the reply, I'm still trying to get my mind round the interplay of the many variables in espresso brewing, grind, extraction ratios, temperature, pressure, bean type and level of roasting. So complex!
awesome video keep it upp
Thank you!
What portafilter is that and the brand of the coffee container. Thanks
Hello! Thanks for the comment! I didn't buy the portafilter it came with the machine when i bought it (i have it paired up with the 15gr 3bomber precision basket), and the brand of the container is Paracity
@ thanks for the reply
Interesting that you're thinking of going coarser. You put 15gr in, got 47 out in 21 seconds. That's quite a high ratio (more than 1:3), especially in such a short time. I'd personally try grinding a little bit finer to see if I could get a lower, or even the same ratio, in a slightly longer time. Any reason why you want to go coarser?
Hey thanks for the comment! I am still learning to know how to change grind size and what effect it has on my coffee. When i did the video i thought coarsening the grind size would ger rid of the bitter side of the taste. Turns out i was wrong. I have since just gone down in ratio. 15gr in 37.5 gr out, and i think i have found my sweet spot. (video coming out tomorrow). Now i have a question. Does 21 secs seem too short for you? Because my scale has the auto timer, and timer only starts when the first drops come out. And that's why i aimes for 20-25 secs. But maybe i am wrong. Anyways thanks flr your comment and advice!
@@danoontjeh123 with my gaggia I put 16g in 32 out but in about 20 seconds. You think I should grind finer?
Nice setup man! I have a question, is your PID also regulating the temperature to the steam wand or is it a byproduct from the one for the main group head. Basically do you have two thermostats or one
@@ludovannieuwenhuizen9013 thanks man! To be honest i didn't install the PID myself. I bought it second hand, with PID already installed. But if i understood well. There's only one thermostat, for the boiler (might be wrong tho). So when set temperature for brewing fir example, i always take care of an offset(usually 6ºC)
The PID controls both. The Gaggia only has one boiler, therefore only one thermostat. Whenever you turn on the steam mode the PID just targets a different temperature than when brewing.

Hey brother , this happens to all of us as a home barista. It’s a learning curve. I like the honesty in your videos. Because it shows not only the beauty but also the struggle. Keep up the good work 😊
Thanks! That's exactly what i try to do with my content, give you guys an update of how my coffee evolves in time. And as with anything, it isn't always smooth sailing! So i think it could help others who start this kind of journey and they can see wee al have bad days and we all screw up coffees from time to time. Thanks for the support! Appreciate your comment! 😊
bad days I have had many! Keep doing you bro
Thanks for the comment!
Nice setup and workflow! I noticed your timer starts automatically when it detects a change in weight. I’d recommend adjusting that feature to start timing as soon as you hit the brew button. This way, you’re capturing the total shot time, including pre-infusion, which can be super helpful when dialing in new beans or adjusting your grinder settings. 5:07
Hello! Thanks for the comment. I got different opinions on that from a few different people. But as you brought it up i will ask you a question because i asked myself the question. Do you think it's better to time the whole thing (from the moment the brew button is pressed till the extraction is done) or to only time from the moment the first drops come out? And exactly why? And keep in mind i will take your answer in consideration, i need to understand why first 😊
u should upgrade ur wdt to something where the needles are facing away each other . The one ur using will just grab the grounds instead of distributing it
Yeah, it's definetly up there in my list of upgrades. Looking into it! Thanks for the comment!
i have the exact same one, also a newbie here so cheaped out on this with Aliexpress. Will that make a big impact?
Ur grounds just wont be as distributed and there will be more clumps in it
Funny I also have it, and indeed I thought its no good, I do have some shaker as well but it still needs some nicer wdt I think to spread it
I have one similar. I physically bent eat pin outwards and it held a slight bend now. Helps heaps and because it was cheap i don’t really care
Tricheur
I respect you’re grind
The Subminimal WDT Flick is good.
Thanks for the suggestion. Will check that out!
I heard you mention an issue with the WDT before but didn't look at it closely enough before. The only issue I see is that it is too small. The diameter of the handle should be larger so the needles can be spaced farther apart. Being that close together makes it grab a bunch of grounds and move it around rather than cutting through it. Our goto is the Barista Hustle Comb.
Thanks for your comment! Yes that's exactly the problem. Some recomand a wdt like the bomber one, with adjustable needle angle. I'm looking into all the options to improve workflow. I'm event looking into all the blind shaker theory 😅
@@eduartCoffee interesting. I didn't know about an adjustable angle version. Although I can usually tell what will work best based off common sense, so that is why I stick with parallel needle layouts. One non-espresso reason being flared designs wouldn't let you get as deep into a pour over dripper. That is also considering someone could only have one WDT for everything. If you ever get into the spirograph type, I recommend looking into the aluminum ARO Espresso. Even though I never bought into the blind shaker thing, I definitely think you should do it. Especially since you are doing the TH-cam thing.
I just got a black Gaggia classic pro as my first espresso machine! Still waiting on my grinder to come in, I opted for the fellow opus. I'm already looking to get a bottomless portafilter and lower drip tray like you have to increase clearance for a scale. Good luck on your barista journey!
Thanks! I've heard great reviews about the fellow opus. I am excited for you to start your journey. Thanks for following along my journey, and hope to hear about yours!
Good work, you'r getting there. The milk should not have foam on top. The milk is suppose to be a nice uniform mixture of micro bubble. Not milk and foam on top. So when you pour, you start high so the mixture cut brought the crema and doesn't stick to it (intégration). And when you'r ready to draw, you pour near the surface so the micro bubble stick to the crema and make nice crisp line. You must do everything to make your milk and bubble not separate. Stop to take many seconds to wash, fill the boiler and everything, purge the steaming wand and clean it fast with a rag and do your pour before the milk separate. The tap on the counter is for exploding the big bubbles, and the swirl is to be sure that the foam is well mixed with the milk. And faster you are to begin the pour means that you'll have still a nice crema on top of your coffee for drawing. After that, take your time to properly clean the machine. Good luck.
Hey, thanks for the feedback! It's exactly what i am trying to improve the most. I'm focusing on doing as little things as possible berween when i steam the milk and when i pour the milk. I think i can get away with just cleaning the steam wand and purging a little before pouring. Anyways thanks for the advice and thanks for following along! ❤️
Why do you tap the coffee before wdt? I thinks you're just creating clumps that you remove by stirring afterwards. Wouldn't tap downwards it until you're sure it's pretty level. Even with the leveler I would rather tap a bit sideways first so the grounds are leveled and fill small voids but not compressed.
Pretty good point. Thanks for the advice, i will try and avoid doing that to be as eficient as possible :)
Where did you buy that nice cup? Also, I suggest the 3bomber WDT, its adjustable and works very well.
I bought it from a nice store, here in Romania named carturesti :)
I'm no expert as i just started using GCP as well but these are some of things I can suggest that works for me when steaming milk. Make sure you start steaming milk before the steam light comes on, Usually about 40 secs. Purge steam wand after 6-12 secs then you want to start steaming right after. You'll have more power when steaming when you these steps. Before you steam, you want to angle your pitcher little bit and only submerge the tip. Once you notice that you're milk gained more volume (compare to starting point) you can lower tip little bit and maintain the vortex until preferred temperature. After steaming, Just purge the steam wand and if the milk baked to the steam wand and hard to remove, you can just clean it after making your latte art. Lastly, if you're going to make latte art, tap, swirl and transfer to a bigger pitcher (made it easier for me).
Thanks for all the tips!! About the steaming. As i have a PID installed, it controls the steam temperature also. This remediates the problem with pressure. So i don't really have that problem
@@eduartCoffee I apologized as I didnt know you had PID installed. yeah, the advised I gave is for gaggia w/o pid. I did installed the Barista Gadget Pro on my machine as well so i dont need to temp surf. I'm liking it so far as it kinda give prolong the steam power.
Looking good! I've only got a Moka Pot but would like to get an espresso machine one day, in the meantime I'm enjoying watching as you get to grips withyours.
Amazing, thanks for watching, been looking intro tryong other brewing methods. I may need help for Moka Pot soon ! ☺️
