Those MBTA f units are majestic!!! Amazing!
The Montrealer in fact ran well before 1989, for history about the train, please watch Amtrak in Vermont on TH-cam by Carl Fowler. My grandparents lived in Montpelier Jct and we took that train every year during the holidays I graduated HS in 1985, and took the train to Vermont for Summer vacation. This is probably the return after a derailment near Waterbury.
Though I've forgotten a lot about this, I'm pretty sure it was not the result of an accident.
Was one track a through track and the other was a terminating track? Long shot since this is 10 years old but still
No. It's a two track main line squeezing down to one to fit through the old portion of the tunnel.
@@FortHillPark I mean is one of the platforms there for terminating because it looks it needs more room to merge
@@moew1051 No. It was a two track station on a two track main.
same loco number as was used in special daytime run of the Montrealer on July 17, 1989 on points further south so almost certainly that date. Was special daytime run, regular overnight service began the following day.
Looks like the last 2 Budd cars are running, smoke coming out of them.
The practice at the time was for the engines on all occupied cars to be running. I'm not sure about the unoccupied cars. The engines were needed to supply electricity for lights, heat, and a/c. I don't know if they still powered the air compressors. They did not provide propulsion, and were not connected to the engineer's throttle regardless of the direction of travel (they were push-pull).
Is this supposed to be a main line?
It is what it is. If you look at a freight density map, I don't think anything in New England qualifies as a main like, for freight. The last I heard, which is quite a while ago, New England Central runs one substantial size train in each direction on this line daily. PanAm is less than daily. Green Mountain does some switching.
Don’t let the overgrown weeds fool you. I’ve ridden and run on this mainline before. This is a route with freight doing 40+, and Amtrak trains doing 60+.
The mbta should bring back the older engines to rehab those instead of wasting money on their budgets I think that those ones were more better and powerful then what the commuter rail has today!
Love the bell on the train
Nice one. I can find so little surviving imagery of the trench station at Salem.
Here's a few: goo.gl/photos/WVfwo3dKfVxb7xp36
Not many videos of aSD40-2 running over Onawa let alone a D&H Geep!
Wicked awesome vid!!!!!!!!!!!
What a K5LA
The Montrealer was reinstated through Palmer and Amherst in July 1989, so this certainly could be the first run of the new route. The train's Amtrak career began in 1972 via the B&M's Connecticut Valley route north of Springfield. I grew up just across I-91 from the 1972 route in the small town of Whately and remember going down to the tracks and waving signs the day Amtrak sent through an inspection train before they started the route. The stop in Northampton wasn't added for a number of years, since my high school French class took the train to Montreal in 1974 and we had to catch the train in Springfield.
Les voix s'accordent à merveille......Un vrai bonheur ! Merci....
I've seen a couple Budd cars sitting on the right side track heading outbound from north station on the Newburyport branch. There's two or three just sitting there, along with a bunch of other cars that seem to share the same age. That old salem depot is still there, but it's entirely locked off and rendered useless. Too bad the MBTA closed it down and made it rot to hell. I would like to see what it was like down there when it was still active. At least the same tracks are still used and you can still see what's left of the old station.
+AdamRud47 hey buddy, I was born in 1981 in Salem and lived there until 1988, I was and still am a huge railfan and a huge fan of the MBTA commuter rail and the MBTA subways, I remember the old Salem Depot fondly when my dad would take me for rides on the T every Saturday, I remember the stairs on both sides of the platform and how steep the stairs were, I remember the sounds and smells of the F10 locomotives and the Budd cars like it was yesterday! I agree they shouldn't have shut it down, they could have renovated it. The reason they shut it down was because of no handicap access and little to no parking. There is a ton of land near the station that isn't used much anymore since the heyday of freight trains have passed, so the yards sit pretty empty. It also could have been used as an overflow station as well!!
I agree with the whole parking and the no handicap access, but with some renovation it could be opened again. Maybe in the future it could be opened again, we will never know.
I agree Adam, that station had a lot of history and feel to it, steam locomotives used to come up from the tunnel near there into a castle like station, I grew up on Loring Ave right near Canal Street. Look up Salem Depot old station on google images
I have seen it, and i'm guessing they tore it down to build the tunnel that goes under downtown Salem to increase traffic flow.
Very nice catch!
Lovely! Thank you.
In response to R. Coley, the Montrealer used to run over the old Boston and Maine from Springfield north through Northampton and on to E. Northfield onto the Central Vermont. This service was discountinued due to poor track conditions over the B&M. The train was moved over the the CV from New London Ct. through Palmer,MA making a stop in Amherst,MA then north and back onto the original route along the remiander of the CV. This was a special daytime inagural run of the train. Normal schedule still maintained the nightime run with arrival in Montreal around 10:45 am. I remember the southbound would stop in Amherst at 1:05am and northbound 2:25am and the trains met in Palmer.
Really nice :)
I first took the Montrealer from New York to Montreal back in 1982. I don't doubt this is the Montrealer, but if this is the inaugural run, it has to be pre-1982. I remember going through southern Vermont at night. I took the Montrealer 3 times, June 1982, August 1983 (my honeymoon), and June 1993 (with our kids). The kids had a blast in the sleepers. This is still great video!
There are two Budd cars sitting near the engine terminal in Somerville rotting away, makes me wonder if they still have an F10 around sharing the same fate.
blood117 well they do but it's at the Edeville railroad

those budd cars got hauled away somewhere in lowell i believe
Steve I was born in Salem MA in 1981, I remember old Salem Depot vividly, especially the cool staircases leading down to the platform... seeing the old F10's and budd cars and the old Salem Depot makes me weep for my youth to return... I wonder what I was doing when you were filming this, I lived right down after Canal St, I lived on 119 Loring Ave, right at the entrance to the Sylvania plant...please tell me you have more footage of the old Salem Depot Steve.....I want more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
Damn that is a nice train! Love the old video.
Cool!
We believe it to be July 1989.
WHAT YEAR IT THIS
I use to live there, do you know what happened to the trains? Are they still active in salem?
Thanks for the response. It's an important part of Amtrak's history in Vermont!
@MrShiz75 I think you're right, so I changed the title/description. I had forgotten that there was a major gap in service between the B&M and CV routings, and confused that change with the change in northern endpoint.
If this is the Montrealer ,this video would have been July 1989. Looks about right.
This could be the inaugural run of the Montrealer which was reinstated long before the Vermonter was even an idea. Informed guesswork on my part too but there are what appears to be sleepers and the Le Pub car which were regular equipment on the Montrealer. I'd venture to say for historic value and interest that if this is indeed the Montrealer it is even more classic and rare. I have yet to say ANY video of the Montrealer in New England on TH-cam. It was normally a night rain.
Great video! Love those horns on the old engines
Das letzte lied ist wirklich schön...wie heisst es? Toll gesungen
that happen sometime morely when the glowplug is to far back from the burner jets it also an easy fix
In this case, plumber "A" had looked at this a month ago (less severe ignition then) along with complaint of small visible exhaust leak and CO alarm activation. Concluded that clothes dryer needed cleaning and ignition was normal. Plumber B came a month later (A's truck broke down), sealed exhaust and replaced hot surface igniter, which solved ignition problem. It's been fine since then. We're not calling A again.
The burner is dirty it's needs to be cleaned.. You can hear the gas valve open but what sometimes happens is dirt gets into some of the holes in the burner and the gas can't come out.. The clear holes let the gas out but if the clear holes are far from the ignighter / pilot light it takes a few seconds for the gas to reach the ignighter.. What you see here is usually the result..
