How is the heater wired. Does it have it's own circuit or is it wried in series or parallel with anything else?
Just this year alone, I've done four of these door defrost heater replacements(January thru March, 2019). There are two wire leads on the defrost heater wire. It does not matter which one ties into the common/neutral and which one ties into your hot/L1. Note the configuration when removing the old heater wire. Tie them in where the old heater wire was tied in. If you can not determine how it was previously connected, you will need to find the 115v. hot leg and a a common neutral. You are going to want this heater running all times, but often they are tied into a freezer compartment light switch, where at times, the prior installation was such that when the staff turned off the light, they inadvertently turned off the door heater. Just make sure you connect one lead to a always live hot wire and a common. Sometimes I use butt splice connectors and other times I use wire nuts or spade connectors if connecting directly into the supply/incoming terminal on the light switch and the common on the switch. We use clear silicone caulk to hold the defrost heater wire in-place before attaching the trim. We just use a caulk gun and lay down a long bead of silicone caulk all along the corner of the door frame. We then press the heater into the silicone and it holds it in place, right in the corner. We then attach all the trim pieces an floor threshold plate. Remember to test the heater before buttoning it up. Throw the power on and feel if the heating wire is getting warm. If it is getting warm, then button it up. Just make sure not to run a trim screw through the heating wire when mounting the trim. Also clean up any caulk that may ooze out or get on anything. Leave the job site cleaner than the way you found it. It is just good practice, because if some "hack" previously worked on the equipment and got silicone caulk, grease or left the area looking messy, you're going to get blamed for the mess. Also, before starting any work, determine which circuit breaker controls the circuit and turn it off to cut power to the line. And to answer your question, it depends. Some have s dedicated circuit, others in series with the freezer compartment light switch(usually a 3-way switch).
