awesome interview. Rest easy George. We miss you </3
Course on the music business?....is there one anymore?
I can see why he would be a popular teacher.Such a rich history.Makes one wonder if at some point in his teaching career he ponders ,why didn't I think of doing this sooner! Thank you for sharing your genious on stage and off!
SLS took my voice to new heights many years ago and Riggs' knowledge and method continue to influence me both as a singer and teacher.
I disagree with that approach of putting the fingers on the cheeks while doing the lip trills. Was the original without it? I had attended SLS training briefly with two teachers. This approach causes the voice and breath to feel constricted. I think that it might have ruined some singers' voices (they sound unnaturally weak). Even MJ was affected.
@@newworldhello I don’t use fingers on the cheeks personally but it does seem to help some singers who trill too ‘wide’ and find their lips stop vibrating. I think the key is finding what works for individual singers: there’s never a one size fits all solution :)
@@newworldhello I didn’t like the pyramid scheme feel of being an SLS teacher as I didn’t want to be restricted in what I taught/teach, but I did take some great things from it.
Thanks for a wonderful interview, and I enjoy The Turtles music.
George been deserved his flowers 💐 RIP George Duke🙏🏽❤️🕊️
G.Duke the BEST g.d.rip
Mark Volman is an amazing musician and I’m sure he’s a fascinating teacher! He’s had an amazing career.
Not a good interview. But fortunately Volman has plenty to say without much prompting and is very articulate.
Mark is absolutely right about the nature of Top 40 radio in the the late 1960s. In 1969, every possible style of music was heard on one AM station: Pop, later Rock n Roll (Steppenwolf, Bob Seger, the Doors), the Jazz side of Rock (Blood Swear and Tears); Motown, Country (Johnny Cash, Roy Clark), vocal music (Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, Bobby Vinton, the Lettermen), Bubble Gum (the Archies), the continuing British Invasion: the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Hollies, Cream; instrumental music (theme from "Romeo & Juliet" by Henry Mancini), a little novelty (comedy) music, as Mark did mention: "Gitarzan" by Ray Stevens; a little bit of Gospel ("Oh Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers), even a bit of Reggae ("Israelites" by Desmond Dekker), and all the Pop One-Hit wonders that completed the picture. You got a complete cultural music education without turning the dial.
I respectfully wish to clarify: what Mr. Riggs demonstrated was not a "tremolo". What he demonstrated was a "wobble" (slow version of vibrato that is considered a vocal fault). A tremolo is a fast version of vibrato, also considered a vocal fault as it's produced through tension in the throat.
his comments were pretty racist
I WORKED FOR CBS IN THE 70’s COLUMBIA OUR LABEL RELEASED A FLO AND EDDIE ALBUM. THE TREAT FOR FANS WAS AN INCREDIBLE VERSION OF ELENOR.
His real name was Mark Brown. I met him in NYC in 1982 when he was working on the Evelyn Champagne King record. He wrote this terrific book on music production. If you can find a copy I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to work in music production. RIP brother, I'm glad we got to work together.
Very first concert ever went to in the 60's. Still love seeing them.
Huge Turtles fan. The vocals are unbelievable! They are just a really fun group that as a bonus have some of the very best songs of that time. Which is really saying something considering the level of talent they were competing with. Beatles, Stones, Small Faces, just an incredible era. There is a bit that he does with Eddie (Howard) where they illustrate on a grease board the 8 different signing scenarios they went through when they were younger, in the sixties, that is absolutely hilarious. It is at the end of one of their documentary videos. Really glad i stumbled on to this. Expect a call from me Danny. I am very interested in either contacting Mark or yourself to get some biz schooling and contacts.Thank you so much for this great interview. Cheers Danny.
A great group
Their time with Zappa was about 19 months long and produced 4 albums and a movie at the time.
That’s rhythm section is really cookin on Boots…
The drum pattern in "You Baby" changed the lexicon in contemporary drumming. It's a staple in every drummer's vocabulary now in both rock & jazz, but that was the first time I ever heard it, played by a guy named Don Murray, who was succeeded by Johnny Barbata. I remember practicing it for hours when I was 16 in my bedroom until I got it down.
I can't believe nobody has mentioned his work with Zappa, as Flo and Eddie!
Early on why didn’t the turtles seek parental advice which could’ve lead to legal assistance BEFORE signing 1st deal ?
💿🐸🐸🐸🐸
He cant sing. He only explain techniques
Flo & Eddie were GREAT! Saw them at the Roxy circa 1976 - Grace Slick threw ice cubes at them as they gently mocked her. Fun times!
I thought that the host was Marty Balin just for a second.
First time I've seen anything on this channel. Great interviewer. Asks great questions then gets out of the way of the guest. Excellent job.
So I wonder... Michael Jackson would speak at a higher pitch, rather than going to chest voice. I wonder if the real reason is because it makes it easier to sing at that pitch?
It’s certainly easier for his voice type. Also, I think he was looking to retain some of his youthful sound.
youtube "my dinner with Jimi" it do be on youtube for free man.
I'm going to start singing in a band and the other member said I should follow him
Amazing person, great interview! Do you have an Instagram ?
I love The Turtles and I was born in 1979. Even better, my daughter was born in 2013 and her favorite band is.....The Turtles!!! Her favorite songs are Happy Together, Eleanor and You Showed Me. 💓
I'm old enough (6th grade at the time) to remember when "You Showed Me" was a new song on the radio and I loved it, it had that mystery and spookiness about it. 1968 and '69 were fantastic years in Top 40 music.
Mark he is a really good singer
Thanks for this interesting Seth Riggs interview...
what year is this originally from?
The Dorothy Taubman of voice pedagogy
You know this motherfucker is a vocalist for life because he said “that’s like a 5 string guitar” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂☠️
A worldly and well spoken man. Thanks for all the toons, especially "She's My Girl".
Here in October 12 2022
Beautiful
A guy died on the mountain where I live and left behind 900 vinyl records. I collected the 350 or so that weren't full of mold or warped or damaged and in there was a double album of the Turtles. I'm a very picky listener and am listening more to unload vs. keep all these records. This double album BLEW MY MIND and I agree with anyone's assessment that this band is one of the very top creative pop rock groups of all time.
Cool 😎
Thank you.
Thank you for sharing time with my hero Mr. P.F. Sloan.
Thank you.
To many Jewish influence in the music business that hurt artists, but it's good that Volman is helping out.
As I understand it Mr. Howard Kaylan and Mr. Mark Volman are Jewish. I don't believe in antisemitism or this idea that the industry is controlled by anything or anyone specifically other than greed. Please don't blame Jewish people.
Mark has a great voice
Aside from Nancy's, this is the best version.
I Can't Get Enough Seth Riggs videos I've watched this one several times already and Revisited it to wonderful effect. I love his sense of humor I'd really love to meet him
Beautiful song 🎶
