How I am going to become a better note taker
มุมมอง 558หลายเดือนก่อน
How I am going to become a better note taker
Great insights.. I'm actively using Mem v2 for my notetaking and PKM, and I must say, I'm enjoying it immensely. I signed up for a subscription almost 2 years ago knowing it was not a completely developed and mature product and they were still figuring things out, but more on the idea of hoping it can become what it hopes to be. I suppose I really started using it a lot just at the time when it had some features removed and there was a new more sparse interface rolled out. I've been using these products long enough to have arrived at the conclusion that there is not one perfect do-it-all. I'm one that rather than try the free version with limited features I'll sign up, pay the coin then immerse myself in it to get a good opinion about it and see if a product fits what turns out to be my 'natural' way I approach my workflow... in essence, to see if it 'fits me.' That said, its become my norm to use a few products in tandem while I vet them. Overboard some might think but it ensures my data is up-to-date and present in them all and I get to actively use them all for what I do. Mem has emerged for me as a companion/compliment to Evernote. Yes, despite growing numbers seeming to pile on that whipping boy, EN is a solid storehouse for everything I do, still has the most peerless webclipper, still has enough 3rd party entities that gets plugged into it so that it compliments other products (zapier, IFTTT, Make, email notes to EN, service that export to EN, etc, etc,.. ), I have a Zapier zap that copies every note created in EN it copies to MEM, this in addition to my creating notes in Mem. Mem's chat so far for me hits it out the park. I query it for information I'm looking for, snippets I have in there, commands/scripts, explanations, etc, and each and every time it comes back with exactly the information I'm looking for. It's proven itself dependable for my day-to-day work. I'm impressed and so pleased with it. I do tend to use it for what it is, rather than what I think some others might want it to be. This is my opinion of what I observed from the complaints, expressed disappointments, and exodus I think happened from many that came aboard early and what Mems's creators stripped away at some point, that angered some. I read feature request that were asked, and it seemed like some folks wanted what they saw other products have, even if it did not really fit the 'mission' of this product (imo). Before embracing Mem, I was going between it and Reflect... I find I have no want or desire for daily journaling, habit tracking, contemplations, etc. Reflect seem to insist on the daily journal metaphor and it turns out I just want someplace to put my info and have meaningful performative ways of retrieving it when I need it. I still continue to use a few products in tandem while I either want to spend time immersed so that I can know it well and see how it fits and to continue my apparent never-ending quest for the perfect beast. Mem v.2 so far is making me smile. I'm loving it. It does what it says on the tin! That's all I ask for.
What is your discord link? You mention it but I can't find it
I will put it in the description as well just in case TH-cam does not show it in comments
discord.gg/Rb92mcSS5Q
Web clipper - you did it right at 8:38, but you did not recognize it 😂.
😂😂😂
How is your discord server going 8 months later? As someone from an older generation, I have to tell you that your qualities of courage to share a vulnerability, concern for others' suffering, flare for fashion, effectual nerdiness, and entrepreneurial spirit make an excellent formula for success and fulfillment in life. Knowing almost nothing of your situation, I can tell you from the vantage point of a 60 year old single person who has lived in world capitals and in the boonies, I suggest you seek out a location that has a large community of residents you vibe with to live in, if that can work for your loved ones or whatever other elements of your life that need to be considered. It's very important to choose a location conducive to strong mental health.
Thank you so much! The discord has grown a bit and we have discussions in there from time to time. I haven’t figured things out fully yet. In the future I might look into moving to some place where there is a larger community. As of right now my girlfriend is studying, but once she has finished her studies we might look into that. Not sure if we will ever move, but it is at least something we will look out. Because you are absolutely right!
Many thanks for the introduction to Memotron. Looks an interesting new app.
It really does. I’m excited to see if they can add all of the features!
I saw this and initially said to myself, "oh gawd, not ANOTHER PKM/Notetaker!". I find that I am overly immersed, over subscribed, and need to chill out with this pursuit... but both watched this vid and went to the website... I must say, it looks promising. I'm surprised. I think @8:20 with your struggle with the webclipper is that you might be better served using that 'side tool' (that blue protrusion mid way down your screen on the right) to determine what you wish to do with those selection. They have a vid on their site that demonstrates it. I'm not a university student any longer and find that for whatever reason PDF's dont seem to dominate my document space any longer. Actually strangely weird that I barely use them at all, so my focus will rather center on notes I create, snippets, links, screenshots, etc I grab from online resources. Hopefully it has a stellar importer that can pull in content you already have in another product (.md, .txt, .html, .enex, etc..). Thought I was going to roll my eyes at this one, but Hmm... If it lives up to what it hopes to be, who knows? Free for now, hopefully if they figure out a path forward they wont try to gouge! Thanks for introducing us to this 'potentially' decent option. Like you, I have WAY too many 'necessary' browser extensions. 35 active and more... much more deactivated. Craziness...
I think it is promising! I figured out the web clipper last night. I am still not a really big fan of the layout of the web clipper, but the general idea of the app is really cool. I think the app looks promising but we will have to wait and see wether or not they will be able to actually add all of the promised features, but this is one I will keep my eye on.
Before I watched: At this point, with so many new PKMs and notetaking apps coming out each day (see producthunt), you could just make a Video on how to create your own Notetaking without Programming Skills with a No-Code Builder.
I probably could. But I would just end up recommending notion 😂😂 jokes aside I think we are the point where we have too many applications
A “mature” app (one that has already hit the “sweet spot” of utility. Evernote, for example). No major updates. 1-2 minor updates per year. An “immature” app (Affine, for example), 1-2 major upgrades per year (so I can keep up) and scads of minor ones. I get very concerned about a notetaking apps viability if there have been NO upgrades for over a year.
I also get concerned when there is no updates at all for a while. I expect things like small bug fixes for example!
“I’m not sure Parker gets enough sleep…..”😂😂😂
Almost a little worried 😂😂
This is how we, users, react to subscription model: we pay and expect to receive updates on a regular basis and it’s tied to monthly/annual costs. As much we pay on monthly basis as higher our expectations. AppleNotes are free and hundreds thousands people don’t care about lack of features, they simply use the app and that’s it. Fair exchange. When app cost around 4-5$USD users expect more and in parallel they are ready/glad to support Devs as users like the app they use. When the app cost 10+USD…well this is where these thoughts appear. “I pay 15$ and I expect to receive my “investments” back as new features, improvements! Why XXXX has offline mode and YYYY doesn’t?!”. Personally, I like 4$ model as a balance between expectations and comfortable zone of monthly payment. Look at Bear :) 3USD/month and gold army of supporters/customers cannot lie.
That’s a great point! Our expectations are tied to the amount we pay in our subscription. Like if I pay for an application with a one time payment I am not expecting any features I just want the app to work as it Is. Not sure if one time payments exist any longer though. Everything seems to be a subscription these days.
@danielpourasg Sublime offers one time payment model :) Sari has her own philosophy and some ideas are very inspiring
@@maxiimm yeah, I really like sublime. I have covered them in a couple of videos. They actually gifted me premium yesterday as a thank you for covering them on my channel, and I also have an interview with sari lined up to talk about their philosophy.
Evernote is a prime example of what I consider new feature overload. I appreciate they're catching up, to a certain degree. with other apps on the marker. However, with 100 new improvements in 2024 i got a little hard to focus on just using the app. Not all of these were features, but enough were to be a distraction. I've only just got round to actually using the AI feature in actual use cases. The other problem with implementing so much was the bugs they came with. Or just the unfinished feel of some of them - the recent Spaces addition for example. They introduced it, if you clicked on it to have a look it created sample spaces. But you can't delete them yet. So I users have these sample spaces just sat there.I'd rather wait for the developer to get the feature as polished as they can before releasing it. If this means less features, I'm personally ok with that. I'd rather 1 or 2 features that are useable and don't break workflow than half baked.
In Evernote’s case I think it is also a little bit about trying to show that they are developing. Which means that they would rather send out unfinished updates and fix them later. It’s like they are saying “look at us we can develop and if there are any issues we will fix them. Because we have already proven that we can develop.” That is at least my thoughts on it.
@danielpourasg Would you say that they've taken that approach to also justify the price increase? Saying that, the number of discounts they run in a year the increases haven't really been that big. I think I got it for £39 in April last year. Full price is £79 here and I notice they have a 50% discount running at the moment. Bit of a tangent
@ I think with the addition of AI they have somewhat justified it. Also a 100 new updates helps with justifying it. I think they have sort of future proved their pricing. They want to add chat in the future or at least more AI features and that will cost some money. So I think they have somewhat justified it, but that they will fully justify it this year and that we won’t see a price increase for a while. Unless something changes. But that is fully based on my personal thoughts. I think that for a few years now note taking and productivity applications will be more expensive
For this kind of card-based mind mapping, I’ve been using Muse. It’s primarily an iPad app that has some innovative gestures and other UX touches that make it a fun lightweight mind mapping tool.
Todoist keeps winning IMHO, they have a simple app when you first open it, but their API is wonderful. They managed to cater to less techy people as well as the power users who leverage these custom integrations with things like drafts and obsidian or Notion. With only a drafts subscription which is like 2 bucks a month or 20 for the year, free todoist and obsidian you have a absurdly powerful and integrated setup that can facilitate thinking and archiving your stuff, evaluating your workload, etc.
love seeing the Moleskine apps being mentioned. They’re super simple and look amazing, they don’t take any time to set up which is my pet peeve with productivity apps, they’re all so counter intuitive.
They are simple, intuitive and beautiful. I just wrote a blog post about the moleskins suite and that it is really underrated for iOS and Apple users. Deserve so much more praise!
I liked Readwise some years ago, but the current pricing is a joke - not sure what are they thinking.
I like then addition of deadlines in todoist. Already become a big part of my workflow
It is a great update! I will be using it too
Wow, Noteplan continues to crush it--such an underrated app.
I love the new Scrintal, I don't use it as a PKM but for researching a particular topic. I still use Capacities as my daily driver for the opposite reason to using Scrintal, Capacities has rigidity so staying organised isn't hard. It has a great mobile app so I'm beginning to use other Apps less and less.
I do exactly the same
I think that is an extremely good use case for scrintal. It is a great research/zettlekasten application. That also removes the need for a mobile application. I might consider doing that in the future, but I will continue with this experiment at least for now.
@danielpourasg you are wise to stick with Scrintal and give it a fair go. I only switch tools once every six months to avoid the temptation of exploring every new option. This approach allows me to thoroughly test each tool. However, I did use Appflowy for a brief period, which means I broke my own rule. I also tried Tana for four months, but I eventually gave up on it because I felt the product has a limit; you can only reach a certain level before it becomes very challenging to use. In contrast, mastering all the features of tools like Notion or even Capacities isn’t that difficult, and achieving that mastery feels like a significant accomplishment.
I loved the simplicity (the fluidity for creating and connecting notes) and elegance of V1-it was perfect for a pure Zettelkasten approach. Now, Scrintal has become more complex in an effort to compete with Heptabase… but it still falls short of Heptabase’s capabilities.
@ I think you’re right at least to some extent. Because the v1 was much better for a zettlekasten system, but I think that the use case for that was too niche to sustain a business. But I might wrong of course, but that is at least my thought. I think there is a bigger use case for scrintal 2.0. But it would have been great if they could maintain v1.
have you tried slite for note taking?
No I haven’t, but I will check it out!
Any plans for scrintal to go local and or offline ??? I would like more privacy
There is offline in scrintal on the desktop apps. However it is not a local first solution. But you can use the app offline and it will sync back up when you are online again. I think that is how it works.
@danielpourasg ok I see good to know... so it's cloud based
As soon as you start storing PDFs and Videos storing localy become impractical. I know Mac are now really powerful but it's not a good thing to carry your only copy of everything because laptops and phones do have a short live.
@ I agree! That is why I personally prefer the cloud based solution with the ability to work offline.
You misspelled: My thoughts on *-scintal-* after using in for a while This is right > scrintal
Thank you for letting me know!
Love the new format, Daniel. Content remains unchanged…consistently excellent!
Thank you so much! More to come!
You should have more affiliate links, you review a lot of apps that hardly anyone else reviews! I'm not a fan of sponsorships, since the brand often tells you what you can and can't say or how long content stays on your channel.
I agree on sponsorships that is why I will not take on sponsorships from apps I would otherwise review. I would probably also be careful with the sponsorships I take on. I will probably include affiliate links in the future once i get to setting them up. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I love your videos btw. Have been watching some of the Anytype update videos you make. Love them!
Thank you for your honesty, personally I'm sick of hearing about ... 1. Con-Sell-Ya 2. Con-Stipella 3. Con-Spella 4. Conzilla 5. Con-Cellar 6. Con-Fetti 7. Con-Fuzzle 8. Con-Quest 9. Con-Traption 10. Con-Flab 11. Con-Fusion 12. Con-Motion 13. Con-Spire 14. Con-Stanza 15. Con-Rella 16. Con-Dango 17. Con-Fection 18. Con-Sutra 19. Con-Tella 20. Con-Fab ... enough! It's turning into a joke app.
Appreciate your transparency! IMHO, we're all adults here, meaning I personally wouldn't hold you accountable if I signed up for an app using your affiliate link and ended up not using it. You're one of the most objective reviewers I've seen to this day. All else being equal, affiliate links would be a win-win for your and for your audience.
Thank you so much for sharing your feedback. Everything else will be equal and I will probably include affiliate links soon. Once again thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.
Excited for it, Daniel!
pkm subreddit could be interesting for you
I spend a lot of time in there 😂
Loving the videos with face ❤
Finally got myself a new camera now I’m saving up to get some lights. I’m glad you like it!
good scope of channel, but perhaps be familiar with a product before making a presentation?
It may be better. It’s just that when I did that before videos would not get as many views. When I’ve done it in this way both the first impression but also the review gets more views. But I will try to just do a review the next time I come across an application to see if it has changed 😊
I like these first impressions better cuz his thought processes match mine. Plus I also get a good idea of how overwhelmed or underwhelmed the app makes me feel the first time I use it. Ofcourse a full product review would also be good but most channels do those anyway. So I appreciate these videos
@ that’s basically the reasons for why I am making these videos.
Is that real or AI?
It is real
anytype's so difficult to use compared to notion. I just hate I always need internet connection to use notion
It is really complicated at first. It took me a good 4 months to get it but once you do it actually makes so much sense!
Looking forward to your mem v2 thoughts once its out of beta... or is it alpha? I'm using it now, and think its really really good. Lazy and Mem - D-level, eh? They certainly have some work to do, but, I dunno about 'D'. Gotta be honest, I like Craft plenty, but it does not do as much as Evernote, I don't see how it ranks above it.
I think it is in beta. I am really excited about it! It is such a great idea and I actually think they are starting to figure out what they want to be. So I am really excited about it. I do not know if D tier is right mem. I just thought that it was right because of the experience I had with them. I tried it once again in December and I had a terrible experience. I struggled a bit with headers and bugs with the editor. When it comes to lazy I think it is too unstable to be any higher. At least the experience I had with it. It has been a few months since I tested it though. When it comes to evernote and Craft I think you might be right. I probably should have put evernote in S tier.
I had a few bullet journals 6-7 years ago and eventually gave up because of the time it took to set up. Also, I once left the journal in a meeting room. Considering I was also using it for habit tracking, journaling my mental health and my personal and work to do lists I had exposed my personal life to the people I work with. There was nothing salacious in the book I'd left, but I wasn't in a place at that time to speak openly about my mental health. That put the nail in the coffin for Bujo for me.
That is not something I have thought about, but it is an issues. You can not lock your bullet journal like you can do with a phone. That combined with how time consuming it is I completely understand giving it up.
Used to be called Moo.do in the old days
Curious to know why you decided to go with Scrintal instead of Heptabase, which seems more feature rich (but also not cheap)
Mainly because of how scrintal treats images compared to Heptabase
Twos system actually is very interesting, I am long fan and user of todoist but Twos is great and simple. They need more integration stuff.
Thanks to your reviews, I decided to commit to using Capacities app for my own "Life OS" 😊 Todoist has been my go-to task manager for a while now, so we're aligned on that front. Thank you for your great work and keep on exploring! 🙌 My stack for 2025: 1. Capacities 2. Todoist 3. DayOne
now that you said craft, you gave me the idea to look into craft's ai features, not sure if those ai features in current notetaking apps are worth it in comparison to just using gpt
AI in note taking apps in general is not any good right now!
@danielpourasg yea i get where you are going. One would have to look for an app that is primarily built as an ai app with maybe notebook or notetaking features, such as NotebookLM, is what im also currently looking into.
Thanks for the feature dude!!
Great job with the app!
@danielpourasg sorry I meant to leave an exclamation mark, not question mark lol!
I could only find two overviews on TH-cam.
It is a really small app!
It isn't really new. It has been around a long time. Back in the day it was called Moo.Do
8 years
This is basically a rename of the Moodoo app. I remember trying Moodoo about a decade ago as it was marketed as a competitor to Workfllowy and then Dynalist. I ultimately chose dynalist for it's simplicity and familiar structure but I noticed that Moodoo was rebranded and was curious about it again. My personal opinion is that this is still an outliner app with some additional task management functions, but I'm not sure I am understanding how they structured their approach to drilling down on each "bullet". Anyway, thanks for reviewing, it looks like it migh be worth creating an account and trying out again.
Good day DPA! I am looking for a well rounded all-in-1 app for Notes / Tasks that could be my digital alternative for my Bullet Journal. Any suggestions for 2025?
I’ve not used this app personally, but based on what you said you’re looking for, Twos may be worth checking out. I’m using Tana, which may also suit your needs, but only for notes. I use Airtable for task management.
🙄 Maybe Workflowy? DPA review : th-cam.com/video/DKoZRP_MzBQ/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
I am a big fan of twos for that purpose, workflowy is another good choice. You also have the bullet app which is based on the bullet journal method. There you have the same system with custom collections and keys that feels familiar if you have bullet journaled. I’m not sure about the privacy aspect though.
Good summary. Has Twos improved its sync functionality? I’ve had such issues with that, especially the calendar integration, which causes a lot of problems.
Thank you! It is much better! Not perfect but it is much better. I have not tested the calendar integration enough. But it feels better than it was previously.
Ya bro Craft cooked up this year… I think 2025 is going to become a great year for them
I think so too!
6:23 This is where Notion is so much better. In Notion, you wouldn't have to manually filter for all views and all projects. You can simply make a template, and it will take care of everything and even new projects that you might add later. But I like the fact that anytype is offline first which means it's way faster than Notion. I use anytype for writing quick tasks and simple notes and storing my resources.
I agree! But Anytype is also a much newer app and it needs time to develop before it is at the level of something like notion!
How did you setup My Types? All I seem to be doing when creating new custom objects is creating new instances My Type objects? thanks in advance.
So the way I did it in that video is a little different to how it is done now. The app looks a little different. I will do an updated video on it
Thanks, good vid. Suggestion - zoom in on what you're showing on the screen, it's difficult to see when watching on a snaller screen e.g. phone screen.
Thank you for the suggestion! Will try to implement that!
you could do a affine vs heptabse vs scrintal version since they updated their software :-) or scrintal vs milanote?
Will do! Thank you for the suggestion!
What is your productivity system? How do you collect information, etc., what are the apps you use?
I will do a video on it soon, but I use many applications. My main ones are twos and scrintal. But I will do a more in depth video soon.
