lathe ball turn attachment

Finally the Smartish and Brownlike attachment is completed ....... and will one day be used in anger. the design evolved as I stumbled through issues during the build. This is a blueprint of overcomplication and how not to do things ..... but I do hope that the video might give you ideas for your projects. I am pretty chuffed having made this one off ...... what doesn't kill you makes you stron...

making stuff from old lumps of stuff takes blimmin ages .....but its cheap. this is the first of a few videos where I clearly show how to do things the hard way. In a future life an enlightened me would buy near sized stock .... and possibly avoid a frozen shoulder

The easy way to do this is to turn a large ball onto the end of a shaft which you have turned and threaded, then fix a flagpole with a ball end into the large ball at a jaunty angle. Hey presto. But I wanted to use the threaded section of a cap head bolt so that I had a really quality thread. So I engineer things the hard way ..... you wouldn't expect anything else really
If you don't want the light to stay on all of the time, do you still need to plug the battery in ?
Interesting ! Your setting blocks are slip gauges (UK), or Johansen blocks (USA) and your allen key is a ball ended key
Whilst I have one, the need for a drill bush for each size and the great care needed when using it became just too tiresome. I put it back in the box, it's there if I need it !
Thank you for this - very helpful. I am just embarking on a similar journey. Do you know what size the belt that drives the table feed is by any chance. Cheers Chris
I have tried various collet systems including 5c with a drawbar and Jacobs Rubberflex. I think these Pratt Burnerd are the best. Key is much easier than a drawbar. On my cva lathe i turned a 6" test piece. I couldn't measure even a hundred thousandths variation.
I have a ZB 32 and you seem to have covered it all. VERY good. The 2 screws to the right of the motor are for the point splitting attachment to be mounted and the pillar on top of the spindle housing is for the mist coolant if used..
It’s really an amazing content with explanation. Can you send me details of CAM?
The notched screwdriver looks to be a decent approach, but it seems to me that you're making life far harder for yourself with the nail. I appreciate you're trying to keep the spring in a position where you can slide it to engage properly, but that definitely looked like the kind of job that would have justified a custom tool; think something like your notched screwdriver but which also engages and pivots over the coil of the spring - load spring, engage tool, lean over to compress the arm, slide into place. Yeah, that's far easier to say than to do... Anyroadup, the result is good, so well done.
Hi, I was wondering if I might trouble you to share which wheels you use on your brierley drill grinder? We have one of these machines in my shop and I have been restoring it to full working order and your videos have been very valuable. Thanks in advance!
Well, that took some doing! good job!
yep another battle I probably didn't need to fight
A bit late to tell you now, but if you slide the spring to one side with long nose pliers one leg will pop out quite easily. Install in the same way. Thanks for the tip with the jubilee clip, I have one with a cracked ring and some spares to cannibalise.
the footage of success was interspersed with fails - the long nose pliers and slide technique being one - springs too strong of my hands. the jaws however definitely have to come out to get that ring off. the real fun is on the collets for smaller diameters where it is way more tricksy to get the jaws both out, ant back in Shed guy
You got any literature on the Model C Autolock?
Deebo seems an odd answer, but I think the chuck is called the autolock model B, and for some reason resellers call the collet with the two prongs an autolock type c . getting the correct collet to fit the holder and the cutter can be a faff on - but is worthwhile in the end. everything I have is right up in the links All the best Shed guy
1.776, yeah definitely American.

Hello, I have the same Brierley zb25 like yours and I was wandering if you can shade some light on how to wire the grinder motor to 120v, I just bought this machine not too long ago but the motor is spinning with no torque, I think the combination of wire are not correct, it has a 120v plug, I greatly appreciate any help.
First off check the rating plate on your motor. It will give a choice of operating voltages , mine is not stamped with 120v. There may be a wiring map for the motor in the junction box where the cable gets to the motor. After that it is time to go to university of you tube Shed man
First look at the data plate this will tell you what the motor is designed for, check voltage, if only 220v it should be single phase, 0r 415v and 220v if both are shown then it will be 3Ph and can be wired star or delta . 120v, are you in the USA ? If you only have single phase then the easiest way is with an inverter, now it's time to check with a local electrician, as it starts to be complicated. Good luck.
its shocking how they can getaway with poor to no instructions, they should at least have tutorial videos online.
Heck of a nice project - really well done. Cheers and all the best.
Great overview thank you. I just bought a chuck and all the imperial and metric chucks on a local trading site. Its a brilliant system for sure. Mine is American I suspect because it has a 3/8 NC drawbar thread but its got no manufacturer on it so its a good thing I don't need any more collets.
I just want my light to come on when the power has been cut, does it matter which port i put it in on the permanent live and neutral? Think i might have a defective batch as the light just stays on and its killing off the battery, to top it off the charge indicator light doesnt light up either?
I had the same issue and it was the little jumper loop that was the key for my light. Stick to wiring the ports according to the markings on the fitting. I made sure that things were as I wanted them to be on the workbench BEFORE final mounting . They do make it tricky Shed guy
I take it this worked as intended? I'm about to make myself one.
Yep it did the trick. I can also use a 5c collet in the spindle nose to hold a piece of stock as a stop - that works pretty good shed guy
Very nice. Nothing like a bit of shiny brass turning to lift the spirits. Nicely done all round. Does your lathe chuck lock? That is - can you turn the chuck in reverse?
Very nice work sir. I tried to make a ball turning attachment years ago. My experience I have to say was even less. Yours is looking great.
Morning Shed made, Ive just picked up a ZB32 head unit only and need to make some of the parts that are missing, I was wondering if you could let me know the measurement between the hole centres of the linkage arm that connects the middle cog to the upright bar, the mechanism that moves the head left and right ! very much appreciated...Del...
Del I have uploaded a parts diagram up in the description section. Name the part and I will measure ..... only I am about to go on holiday so it may take time The download is worth a look at least Shed guy
Nicely done!
Very nice work sir. I still have to make a attachment for ball turning. I have a few ideas though. He he. Some day
cheers rusty like your channel ....... looks like you are a shed warrior fighting the same battles. I gave in on biking as I won't bounce down the road so well these days ...... good fun though Shed guy
Shoulda gone to Specsavers.
nicely done ! Thanks for sharing
Nice work - nice save. Stuff happens - as they say - but we live and learn. Nice approach clamping the old part to the new that way. 👍
cheers stuart loving your shed ... looks like home from home .... only better
гуд
Very.
Thank you
thanks for explanation
Great project - top execution. 👍👍👍👍
Can this grinder be used to sharpen endmills?
It can sharpen 4 flute tap and core drills with the correct cam - no mention of end mills. So I guess not If anyone knows better please comment. All the best Shed guy
nicely done! enjoyable
cheers for that there's more to come ... believe me
👍👍👍👍👍
Hello friend, I also bought a machine just like yours, but it only comes with attachment number 2, do you know where I can buy the other three missing ones? thank you very much.
hunt around used machinery dealers ...... you come across stuff when you least expect it good luck
The full set of cams is 7 right hand and 7 left hand, you seldom see a full set. I think you can get them from Chester machine tools but they were about £100 each. Good luck.
Very nice work. I like the way you reclaim metal and don’t give up when you’re machine didn’t work to your standard
Quite a extensive job you are doing. Nice work.
Hi I have one of these, they’re great. If the drill was held in a smaller diameter holder all would be ok! As the chuck jaws would be out of the way!
Yep good point little dodges make all the difference
Milling wide sections of cast iron can be a real chore- and especially if a decent flatness is sought. I dulled at least two shell mills and one slab cutter milling a casting to be a scraping practice piece. This is where a tool and cutter grinder would really come in handy.
right ...... so the moral there is watch the cutters for wear cheers
I wish I could have found a hunk of cast iron to harvest here recently when I had to order a 3 inch square piece on line. 3 inch square cast iron cost me $72 delivered to my door. No joke. 😱
That's if you can get it. Tricky to source here in the UK , and premium prices too. Having said that the stuff I am using can have voids and inclusions which are a pain all best
✈Thanks for the video, greatly appreciated. Once again, thanks. This is such a good video! Great informative video! ῳ💡❀ Very Good my love ∰§
Thanks for that i was wondering if the jumper was the switch for maintained and non-maintained.
I done my apprenticeship at Smart and Brown.
wowsa fantastic. did you stay the course ... or move on to other things. Always interested in how things were back in the day shed guy
I have had a similar problem with my Wohlhaupter UP3. To date I have not been able to figure out what is wrong.
Great informative video! Did you happen to strip and grease the spindle front bearing?
Narp but I took the cover off and had a look ... then regreased from that direction. its another order of magnitude to strip the bearing out as you then remove the shaft , and the rear bearing ..;l;;;; honestly this shaft is not rotating too fast so no big worry. Probably go there when the belt fails ... although a linked belt seems like a good option. shed guy
Great drill press rare machine
Cheers Adam Yep these are cracking machines. This design works a treat . If it had an MT2 taper it would not have left me ...... having said that I do miss it. Shed guy
At the 5 second point in the bottom left of the screen SHED is spelled wrong. Just in case you want to fix it.
Brilliant I am unleashing dyslexia on an unsuspecting world. Many thankxx my friend Shed guy
The best drill grinder there is,I used one of these for years in the toolroom, ground all kinds of drills and taps and pilot drills, there was a good selection of cams for many angles, wish I had one now of my own as I foolishly gave mine away many years ago.
that sucks only problem is I have no excuse for blunt drills and stuff shed guy
Nice interesting video, well planned out.About 25 years ago I had to make a new nut for the knee for my Senior as it was so worn, now after years of use a lot of backlash has formed so it could be a new nut again, toying with the idea of making a nut with an ab extra circular nut to make a backlash eliminator.
Yep something a little better would be an idea, the screw always looks a little skinny to me shed guy
