Great video!
A 35 amp battery and a 25 watt panel will do just about nothing. You just made something big enough to charge a cell phone. Nothing personal i appreciate builders but this is way over priced for a TINY capacity
Thank you for the positive feedback and watching. I would agree, there are a lot of improvements that can be made and if those were available locally I would have gone that route. I used to use a 20000 mah Anker power pack and it would just barely last keeping a phone and my camera charged over a weekend. This allowed me to keep 3 phones topped off as well as cameras and running an inverter for 120 when needed.
Propane iffy in cold weather camping.
Thanks for watching. That is no joke, I have not been camping in cold enough weather in years for propane to not flow. I hope to soon though and have the repair kit for the tank pump sitting on my work bench now!
This is great. After I get my electric mower switched to Lithium. I will try setting up a small 50Ah my nephew left behind. It will certainly come in handy as I live near the Gulf of Mexico. Luckily, I'm a bit inland, rural and 100 ft. above sea level. I have too much stuff my relatives leave behind.
Thanks for watching. I have family about an hour front the coast that was majorly affected by hurricane Micheal. This would not have met the needs of 120v for them, but I remember how much of a pain it was to just keep phones charged. Good luck on whatever you build!
I have been using the same 2 burner white gas coleman for 33 years, easy maintenance, replacement pump and seal assemblies cheap and easily available I'm from Canada and propane sucks well below zero.........our Canadian Rangers patrol our frozen North in 4 to 6 man units amd they rely on these exact COLEMAN stoves for food and melting drinking water, heat etc......1 stove per 2 men so if there are problems they can cannibalize parts from one to keep the others going
Thanks for watching. That is pretty cool. I have watched a lot of other TH-camrs in the north and it looks like it would be fun. Hard work, but fun. And yes these stoves are pretty tough. Someone else mentioned looking through the market place for other stoves to buy. It would be nice to have spare parts, not sure why that never crossed my mind.
The connections you referred to as “Anderson” are actually SAE.
Thank you for watching. Yes, I put that in the description.
No power in Florida hurricane here. Solar generator guy was looking to trade gas for a recharge.
Thank you for watching. Wow, that would be an interesting situation to be in. Just shows you cannot have just one tool for the job. A small generator to top off might go a long way with solar.
Except for the Battery, it's a fair little System. That 36 Amp Lead Acid Battery will only give you about 15-17 Amps of useable power. IF you are going to use this battery, you'll need at LEAST 3 of them for any real runtime in an emergency.
Thank you so much. Yeah, I totally agree. I wish I could source a local supplier for LPF batteries. I will upgrade at some point but it did serve me really well for phones, cameras, etc..
🤔 why would you film a video about Solor in the night 🥴😵💫🥴🤣😅🤣
Hey, I appreciate the constructive feedback! Life and timing do not always work out, however I do not think you missed out on anything other than a little light turning on showing it is charging. Thanks again!
You can run regular landscape lights... Do they only have lead acid batteries??? At least use batteries terminals to BR and CH 10 Terminal Plug-On Neutral Ground Bar with 2/0 Lug plus fuses on negative side, and get rid of alligator clips...
Thank you for taking time to watch! Yeah, the shop light was more of an example. The past few times I have used some low wattage light strands and plan to move to some that is just 12v. Yes, they only have SLA, where they are not the best, they are quickly accessible. Yes, bus bars would be a good upgrade as well as better terminal connection. These are planned upgrades that are not sources from Harbor Freight. Thank you for the suggestions and constructive feedback!
Modified sine wave inverter is not good for sensitive electronics. Like phone and tablets.
Thank you for taking time to watch! That is very true. Thankfully this inverter has inline fuses and USB that operates independently. There are definitely improvements that can be made.
I believe he covered this several times during the video but yes, that is correct.
Interesting , Thank You
Thank you for taking time to watch and I hope you enjoyed it!
@@MatthewVenturesOutside Thank You for the Good Ideas
It's all a slippery slope! I started similar and before long I had a mini-shed mounted on a pallet that I could run around my property with my tractor as needed that has all Victron components (shunt, charge controller, Cerbo GX, inverter, etc) and touch screen, internet connectivity (12v router), and even a livestreaming camera. I found that once I could see every watt in and out via the shunt, I was far more interested in its efficiency and fascinated with all the metrics I could get.
LOL, yeah my project lists have already doubled going down this rabbit hole! Thank you for taking time to watch and I hope you enjoyed it!
need to mention: need to correct: (4:18) seconds if you put your solar panels in series, you increase voltage, not wattage. you want to put them in paralell mode.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and pointing that out in a positive way. You are very correct and in series that would cause damage to the solar controller. Someone else commented on voltage but I did not catch or connect that it might be because of that mistake.
The good news is if you buy more of that same solar panel they will automatically connect in parallel. I used their 4 panel kit to power my Power Tool charging station and provide light in the shed. I did finally upgrade the lead acid battery with a red odo and and a cheap pmw lithium charger controller for it. Seems to be working very well.
That is good to know. I have been back and forth on what to upgrade first and I think it should be the panels. If I cannot get my current battery fully charged in a reasonable amount of time then there is no use to upgrading the battery yet.
What was total cost?
Thank you for the interest. I updated the description with the cost, but I think they change a bit. I spent about $210 all together.
Any build that uses lead acid batteries is so obsolete it's not worth doing!
Thank you for that feedback! True SLA is not ideal and if there was a LFP battery available off the shelf, I probably would have gotten it. I appreciate you watching and sharing!
You explain it so well. Thanks for the simplicity in the video
I appreciate the feedback and happy you enjoyed it!
Nice little power station! Well done!!!
Thank you. It has room for improvement, but it is simple, easily repairable and best if all it does work!
@matt That is a basic go kit that every home should have some form of & like you said dump the clips for O-rings & I'd add 2 things one side a vent intake with small pc fan opposed side so gasses vented from battery are not ignited by the inverter ! I'm a ham radio operator & have done the same basic setup but mine did explode because I overloaded the draw on the battery & it out-gassed really bad ! No one was hurt but scared the piss out me ! Some ppl cut the top out enough so they could mount the invertor face right to the lid & made access to it much better then they hot glued around the face but i think that's to easy get rain inside the plug !
Punctuation is your friend!
Thank you. Yes, I will be improving and likely will not run the inverter max load simply because the battery would not last long.... Not to mention the clips are not a good enough connection for that amperage. I too have seen where others have cut holes, but I have seen some outdoor electrical panel boxes that have weather resistant vents and am wondering if I could adapt something similar to this small format. Funny in all the disasters that have occurred lately I had thought of looking into Ham radios. I've been in a few recovery situations where cellular is just not an option.
Don't car batteries have a place in the cover for a hose that could be used to lead the hydrogen outside the box, which would reduce the risk of explosion? I myself have a panel and controller bought 20 years ago, which were not installed at my summer house as I originally planned , and I put them into use in my apartment a few years ago. I mainly use it to charge my phone (the controller has a USB port) and to make coffee with a 12v kettle. It takes 15 minutes to make a cup of coffee, but I'm in no rush 😂 cables should be thick, and connections decent because the currents are high even at relatively low powers. @@MatthewVenturesOutside
Great Video, would you like to collaborate with our battery? How can I get your 📬
I appreciate your time and thank you for the interest but not looking to collaborate at this time. I'm sure I will in the future and will probably update at that point.
Great video. Thanks for all the specifics. You make it seem easy enough for even me to accomplish, and I just may give it a go. Thanks again!
Thank you and I am very happy I can be an encouragement.
Can u do a price for all of it please?
Thank you for the interest! I updated the description with the prices but I think the prices have changed a little. I think my total was about $210 all together.
That is worth alot.
Thank you for the interest. It has been a benefit to having this while I get the part to fix the pump tank. This has also led me down the rabbit hole of reusable 1lb LP tanks and refilling them, lol. Not sure if that is good or not but at least it is something to learn!
Awesome job! Great example for a quick temporary setup for a non technical person. I would explain briefly difference between peek and running watts. Remember that when an appliance is turned on, it briefly demands more wattage, then comes down to its running wattage. That's why the peak wattage will always operate for a short time. Thanks again, and keep that content coming.
Thank you so much! That is a very good and important point on Peak/Surge wattage and running wattage. I think I felt like I was rambling when I talked about it. However, it is important to know that when sizing what you are wanting or could possibly run off of the inverter.
The solar charge controller (MPPT) can accept up to 22V and will draw up to 7A or 100W. That 25W solar panel has a voltage of 12V (doesn't say if that's Vmp or Voc). Connecting two of these solar panels in series would be 24V, which exceeds 22V. You would need to connect four of these panels in parallel, for a voltage of 12V and an amperage of around 8A. The MPPT would not draw more than 7A, so it'd limit you to roughly 84W. Nothing will get damaged though. You can exceed amperage and wattage, but you cannot exceed voltage. Specifically, the open-circuit voltage (Voc) can not exceed an MPPT's max input voltage. You covered some of this at the end of the video, but it would have been good to state the following in the beginning of the video: Using an SLA battery for solar instead of an LFP is a poor choice. It simply will not last, it's heavy, and inefficient. SAE connectors are not meant for solar use as they're not waterproof. Should be using MC4. Modified sine wave inverters should not be used to drive an AC motor e.g. fan. Alligator clips for 400W at 12V is questionable as 33A through a poor connection can be a fire hazard. Ring terminals are not optional for this use. Harbor Freight is overpriced junk in terms of their solar offerings. Buying from Renogy would likely be about the same price but much better. Not that Renogy is great, it's just common. Though I guess if you had a Harbor Freight and no other options, then this MacGyver setup is better than nothing.
These are some excellent points, thank you so much for sharing this in a positive way! I feel like I am late to the solar party with all of this and have a lot to learn. There are a lot of improvements that can and will be made. I think this was a good way to get the concept in my head and now I feel more confident buying items online. You mentioned ring terminals would not be an option. Why is that?
@@MatthewVenturesOutside I meant that ring terminals are not optional, as in ring terminals are required for safety. Sorry, I sometimes word things in a weird way. Have fun on your solar journey!
Gotcha! That makes sense. Words also never come over in text the right way anyways. Thank you again for your time and comments!
He misspoke. The panel is one of their amorphous panels, great output for cloudy days and the same single panel in their 4 panel kit. If he expands it, it will be 50 watts at 12 volts, unless he intentionally cuts and changes the connectors to make them in series. When HF runs their sales their panels are very competitive. There normal panels produce more energy than the renegy out rich solar panels. Again you have to get them on sale or it is over priced. bought their 4 panel setup and used a small battery with a very inexpensive 300 watt pure sone wave inverter and use it to charge my power tool batteries and used the lights that came in the kit to have lights in my shed when the lights are out. For around $150 it was roughly the same price as anything else on the market with better cloud cover power.
great vid. Thank you. Was wondering, Could I go with a higher wattage solar panel to top off the battery quicker and what upgrades to your system do you plan for in the near future?
I wish I could figure out how to mention another post on this because they shared a lot of good info. @adriftatlas. Yes a higher wattage would top off the battery quicker, you just have to make sure you are exceeding the max voltage rating. Upgrades will definitely be a better charge controller and LPF battery. At least a 100 watt foldable panel. I would also like to reduce the need for an inverter all together, at least for camping use. Our air mattresses are AC I know the modified sine is not good on the motors, so a smaller pure sine will eventually be bought. I want to get a panel for DC plugs too that are marine grade and accessible from the outside.
@@MatthewVenturesOutside Thanks for that info my friend.
Propane isn’t an upgrade for people who want a dual fuel ya crazy guy lol. Propane everywhere, no need here except for clicks and views
Thank you for the feedback! I'm not sure how to use it for learning purposes. This was an upgrade that has worked very well for me. I do plan to repair the pump tank to have the ability to use gasoline or the Coleman white fuel. What would be a good upgrade to dual fuel in your opinion?
@@MatthewVenturesOutside no worries, I was essentially saying going to propane isn’t an upgrade for most people. I like the thought and usefulness of doing it though. Wasn’t r\trying to sound like an ass or anything, one love.
Awesome, I did not think you were, my anxiety nags at me though, lol. Thank you for taking time for conversation and viewing.
@@MatthewVenturesOutside no worries Matt, keep up the good work.
Well explained - thank you.
Thank you. I am happy it was helpful.
I think those are SAE connectors.
You are absolutely correct, I misunderstood what I was looking at. The Anderson are much larger. Thank you for pointing that out.
@@MatthewVenturesOutside Not a problem...we all make mistakes. You should see some of the BIG ones I make. I have to live under a rock anymore. Did like your video. Very helpful.
Good video. I think you accomplished your goal.
Thank you so much and yes. I am looking forward to making some upgrades with what I have learned.
Good work! You graduated solar generator 101!! Look into Anderson power poles. They are much smaller than the ones that most people think about, come in colors and are easily configurable. Also, consider mounting that charge controller to the back of the solar panel. It will make wiring other panels in parallel SO much easier.
Nice, but i think i'll stick with the old system
The old system is tried and true. It is nice to have options too.
Do yourself a favor and buy a leather pump cup for that pump or you can get the pump repair kit with the leather cup and then you just need to keep the leather oiled with some light oil. You can also go onto marketplace in your area and search for Coleman camp stove you can pick used ones up that may need a little bit of TLC or you can pick ones up that are ready to use relatively inexpensively and they are built a whole hell of a lot better than the garbage you can buy today
Yup, I have the repair kit on my Amazon list right now, lol! That is a good idea about picking up some other stoves because, yes, all of the ones I am seeing now won't make it more than a few years. Do you use any specific oil for the cup?
@@MatthewVenturesOutside I use neatsfoot oil but any light oil such as 3-in-1 will work
@@MatthewVenturesOutside also there is a company called Old Coleman parts great guy to deal with and they have the repair kits with the leather cup
Awesome, thank you. I have the neatsfoot oil and old Coleman parts on my list. Thank you for taking time in conversation and on my video.
@@MatthewVenturesOutside not a problem at all man. I collect vintage Coleman stuff and I also enjoy helping other people get their vintage Coleman stuff going. I have over 100 lamps lanterns stoves etc
Great stoves , tough as nails and replacement parts are readily available and affordable ! Stick with white gas , it's common everywhere , propane canisters are not !
No joke, it is amazing mine is still in pretty good shape considering how I neglected it. Yes, I have a repair kit ready to order as I hope to do some cold weather camping soon. Propane probably will not work well in the cold. Not to mention those 1Lb LP's get pricey.
These stoves are not the difficult to keep going. Just a little maintenance at the end of the season is all you need to do. You can still get all the parts like pumps, fuel cap gaskets and generators. A little soap and water keeps it looking good too 😉
Yup, I actually feel bad that I did not keep mine in good shape, but I will be fixing that! Any recommendations or to-do list for an end of season maintenance?
Can you post the link for it? Thanks!
I just updated the description and I'll post it here as well. Thanks for the interest! th-cam.com/video/AvkRXhwP_Y8/w-d-xo.html
at $7.00 for a 1lb bottle of propane you might be cheaper off fixing the old pump.
That is a very valid point. Especially after this last trip and seeing you can easily go through a tank in a long weekend! I am just now seeing the option of using the green refillable tanks and will be looking to utilize that option.
@@MatthewVenturesOutsideflame king tanks are worth the money. They also have the refill kit with 2 1 lb tanks.
Multiple choices for fuels is the way to go
That is no joke. Just looking at all of the natural disasters happening in the U.S makes me keep reevaluating what options I have.

Many thanks , didn’t know this was possible. 👍🏻🔥
I had just randomly searched for it and low and behold there was an option! I am happy that I can share!

@@MatthewVenturesOutside ok sweet thankyou
My pleasure! Here is that link just in case th-cam.com/video/N4MJRT6W7PY/w-d-xo.html. Thank you for taking time to view and talk!
Thank you very much for providing this information! It's timely and extremely useful! I just followed the link and ordered one of these to add to my "off-grid" capabilities. I also picked up an adapter to fill the little green propane cans from the large 5lb cans. I can't tell you how many of those little Coleman generators I've been through over the years! :) Now, if they can figure a way to do this with the little single mantle red lanterns!
I am happy it was helpful. I found this very useful as well. I actually am just realizing how wasteful the 1lb LP tanks are and have been looking into the green reusable ones too.
Propane is nice and convienient but the liquid puts out way more heat (BTUs) BUt, it does provide a nice alternative when appropriate.
I totally agree. Once you are in near freezing temps propane also becomes useless and the pump tanks with the white gas or unleaded become essential. Cannot forget how reliable the tank has been in the past.
I built something like this. But instead of a power inverter I used a 12 volt water pump.
I have been going through my camping gear I want and trying to find anything that is 110v and find a 12v alternative to increase the efficiency. Would save space and weight without the inverter.
I did the same thing just added usb and aux sockets to mine its portable and been keeping my electronics charged at home. What inverter did u get and what do you use it for?
I want to add the 12v connections next, they just did not have off the shelf parts that time. The inverter is a 400 watt Jupiter from Harbor Freight. So far I have only really used it for airing up 2 air mattresses and a couple fans. The inverter also has pass through USB connections that are protected by the inverter's fuses. I have been using that to keep phones, cameras, etc. charges!
@@MatthewVenturesOutside yea i just got the usb kits from ebay with a aux socket and switch its so easy to install 3 to 7 days to deliver and your set.
Gasoline is much cheaper and better suited for cold weather. The propane hack looks cool though.
No doubt there! That is why I will be fixing the original tank. Those little 1 lb. LP tanks only last a few days too.
