Photographing Loons From Hatch to Fledge: A Season with the Loons S3 Ep3: The Finale
A Season with Loons S3 E3 The Finale!
This is the season finale for my third season photographing loon families in Northern New England (which is the states of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine). After numerous failures earlier that spring and summer, I finally have a pair of loons that has 2 chicks. I follow the family around and hope that the chicks can fledge before freeze up due to their late hatch. The conditions range from rainy days to freezing mornings in mid-October but as always days of beauty, peace, and reflection.

*Important: Notes on ethically observing and photographing loons* I photographed this season using either a 600mm or 800mm equivalent focal length, often cropping much further in post- production, and abided by ethical guidelines. You should not simply paddle right up to loons. Not all loons will be tolerant of humans and learn to read their behavioral signals. The loons in my films are tolerant. Please educate yourself on loon behavior and the ethics of observing loons before attempting to observe them in the wild. Some guidelines can be found here. In summary, loons have various state and federal protections, and harassing them can be a criminal offense, carrying fines and even jail time. You will be watched on lakes by other boaters and homeowners on developed lakes. While loons are on the nest, they are particularly vulnerable to human disturbance, including kayakers and photographers. I personally chose not to even photograph them at this time, and if you must, keep your visit very brief and from a far distance. Once the chicks have hatched, loon’s tolerance for human presence will vary from individual to individual. Do disrupt their ability to hunt and feed the chicks. General guidelines for how far to stay from them is 100 feet to 100 yards. However, it is allowable for loons to swim up to you on their own (though you must be mindful that you are not drifting into them), which is what happened in some of the close-up footage and photos as two of my loon pairs were very tolerant.

In 2023, I visited what is possibly the largest nesting colony of Northern Gannets in the world off the tip of the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec, Canada. I just love all the captures you got of the loom family! They are so beautiful and I love the loon call. Seeing them ride on the parents' back is so cute! I am so glad you had a nice season with a loon family. The blue heron captures were beautiful as well. I especially enjoyed the landscapes with the fog. It just adds such a mystic to everything. Thanks so much for your kind comment! Photography wise, for the loons from a kayak that doesn't stay totally still, I prioritize shutter speed ahead of ISO, so I shoot manual with auto ISO and let ISO float where it needs too. If the loons aren't really moving and the water is still, I can maybe get shutter as low as 1/500 or 1/640 but otherwise need to keep it above 1/1000. If its pretty bright light, ISO might be around 1000 but for those smooth darker water shots ISO is closer to 2000-2500 and even higher when the light falls lower.

A quick clarification on the thing "few humans have seen/ I have never seen before" (spoiler alert)↓↓↓↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ Once loon chicks leave the nest, they do not go back in. So being able to see them leave the nest is quite rare since you have to be there at that exact moment. That is why I was so lucky to witness this in person! I don't think I made it clear how rare it was in the video itself, sorry! It was very windy and the footage was shaky, but I was happy to capture that moment on camera.

I made several fishing trips to Northern Wisconsin with my Dad in the 1950's. I spent many hours on the lakes fishing... The loons were always magical. They kept me company. They're the first thing I think of when I think of the North woods and those times with my Dad... I live in Georgia now with my Grand Kids. Far from the loons. But, I've shown them your video and others about the loons. I've told them about how special they are. Hopefully, someday they'll get to relive my experiences...

From what I know about loons, they do their iconic lengthy wail when they have lost track of another loons position and want to find them again. In contrast to that, the short hoots are basically just quick back-and-forth updates when changing position. It's unwise to ascribe human behaviour and motivation to animals, but it does feel like the loon at the end was engaging you. It gave you localisation hoots - basically "I'm over here, let me know where you are going". While that might sound sad, maybe a better interpretation would be: "Keep in touch" - and perhaps even "I'll miss you". Your video was beautiful and I am very thankful to have watched it. Truly touching.

This is an excellent comment and breakdown of the meaning of the loon calls, of which they have 4. You are right about the hoots, by far the most relaxed of them all. Yes, for all of the time I spent with them, that loon at the end did seem to be engaging with me. So who know what it had in mind (again not that loons have the same kind of "mind" we have. Thanks again for watching and for such a thoughtful comment!

Thanks for the feedback Jeff. Interesting to hear that's how some of the segments came across. In my head the purpose of those parts is to address a wide audience, many of whom may not be familiar with the practice of wildlife photography and give a sense of the etiquette and in my state, the law (there are fines and imprisonment for 'loon harassment'), regarding approaching loons. I have witnessed some people with cell phones paddle right up to loons with chicks and freak them out, so I guess that is more what I had in mind rather than online haters. I am shooting at 800mm effective focal length, and sometimes cropping, so I just didn't want to give the expectation that you can get so close as to fill the frame on a cell phone. But thank you again for the constructive feedback.
