Confused by Voice Lessons? This might be why...
Ever been confused by all the "right ways" and "wrong ways" to sing? Me too! The strong contradictory opinions floating around can make voice training seem like more trouble than it's worth. Not to mention the buckets of terminology and vocal anatomy singers are supposed to learn...
Even the professionals get confused sometimes ;)
So how did we get here? I'm chatting a bit about the background of vocal lessons and the training methods that have emerged over the decades. I'll also give a breakdown of the pros and cons of each training approach mentioned in this video.

Holistic approach to singing teaching is the key. There is no one and only way to teach as there are too many styles and even more individuals singing them. Fantastic video and great subject, that needs to be spoke about more. Xx
@wiolafrancis3534 I appreciate your input here! Thank you, I couldn't agree more. 🎤💕
very nice video!

Tongue trills are even more difficult than lip trills. Still looking for alternatives to both.
@WideCuriosity have you tried straw phonation? It will give you similar back-pressure on your folds!
Thanks for the response. I have wondered if that would be an alternative. I have hinted about that via comment on various singing teacher channels, but you are the first to suggest it is a valid alternative to trills. I have, in the past, browsed websites offering expensive, all bells and whistles singing straws, and also had one TH-cam channel teacher claiming the tube from an old biro would be sufficient. I've found advice on using a straw on it's own, and advice using it to blow bubbles in a glass of water. I have yet to buy one and try it though.
@WideCuriosity it definitely is! All of these are forms of semi-occluded vocal tract exercises. The straws designed especially for singers are great because you can adjust them. But you can achieve a similar effect by trying plain old drinking straws of different widths. Wide straws will create less pressure, and narrow straws will create more pressure. I'd experiment with a few different widths. If you're using a straw in water, different volumes create different pressures, too. I'd recommend starting with only an inch of water and work your way up so you don't fatigue your voice.
@@truesongvoice Thanks 👍
Sadly this will only apply to females as it’s female head voice
@@geespar1 although I'm singing in female head voice, the principles and exercises also work for male voices. They just need to be sung in your own tessitura (usually an octave lower). And if you're new to singing, start with a smaller range and don't stretch as high at first. 😃
@@geespar1 and thanks for raising this excellent point as I should have included it in the video!
High notes for females stay high for males, don't they ? Look on it as exercising your counter tenor range. PS, is your keyboard really giving you higher pitches as you go further left ? Or has the video been switched left to right ?
@WideCuriosity oh definitely still high, yes, haha. 😂 But still possible for male voices if they are interested in stretching their range out. Not all singers need or want to, of course... but tenors especially are very capable I've found. The image is reversed. I'll have to look at adjusting that in my set-up next time!
You were going up to G#5 at times, that’s not in the male voice range (even a tenor) without going into falsetto, which is of course undesirable, I’m not nitpicking here, I’m just pointing out that my original comment was completely valid
Thank you so much !
@beabagel happy to help!
Cool
Interesting
Practice ingredients of vocal mix with one easy exercise! EXERCISE: "Where are you going? Zee: so -la -ti -do -re -mi -fa -so -do I like to start this one in my lower register in a chest dominant mix, and then gradually sing it up into my upper register while playing with different intensities of: ✨️chest voice, ✨️head voice, and ✨️pharyngeal resonance. All 3 of these are important ingredients for developing a clear and strong mixed voice!
my Choirmistress told me after Midnight Mass my mixed voice is the problem - I don't transition well between chest and head on the downside she's not a vocal coach
@CrowneofBeautyFromAshes blending the registers can be challenging initially, but some targeted exercises can help! Often starting with vocal glides or sirens is the easiest approach 😀
nice video!
@andreasgoniotakis4655 thank you! I hope it helped you in some way. 😃

@albertmo1722 wow, thank you Albert! Yes, I'm Canadian 😀
@@truesongvoice Thank you so much for answering my question! Your pronunciations of "out" and "about" gave away. 🙂 Keep up the great work! Cheers, Albert
This vocal exercise can help release natural vibrato! Focus on keeping each note energized as you release it! I find adding a hand gesture can help with this, and it also gives your brain an external point of focus, which will help keep you relaxed while singing. Note: You shouldn't feel any tightness or tension in your throat during this exercise.
This vocal warm-up takes some energy, but it's worth the effort because it serves multiple purposes! Gotta love an efficient warm-up. 🙌 A few tips to keep in mind for this vocal exercise: ✨️ Keep a tall vowel space and rounded lips. ✨️ You'll need a full breath. As you inhale, feel your soft palate lift and keep it lifted for the exercise! ✨️ Engage those ab muscles :)
You might know pharyngeal resonance by its more popular descriptors: "forward placement" or "singing in the mask." (And, occasionally, "sing into your unicorn horn." 😅 ) But no matter what you call pharyngeal resonance, we need it!! Both for strong singing and for developing a well-coordinated, balanced vocal instrument. I can get carried away with this exercise - it's fun to sing!
Yeees I just recovered from being sick❤🎉
@Hvs-222 good timing! I think that's true of a lot of us right now 😅
Can you do that saying dur dur dur dur
Using legato and the glissando are two great ways to practice smooth transitions between notes! Keep the shift between each note smooth and even, with no sudden bursts of air or uneven volume levels. This is a great way to practice vocal control while also warming up your voice! 🎤✨️

Браво за старанието. ❤
If you want to sing with a vibrant, richer, fuller sound, optimizing vocal resonance is key. It involves opening up the vocal tract as much as possible while also "placing" or sending the voice forward so that it can resonate freely. Practically speaking, I'm getting more resonance like this: ✨️The "m" consonant helps me find forward placement. ✨️A tall vowel shape opens up my mouth space so the sound can be amplified inside my mouth and projected out into the room with more power. ✨️At the vocal fold level, I'm using a clean and balanced onset (how I start the note) so that the voice and breath move together. This gives a clearer vocal tone than the 1st example, where l'm starting with too much leaking air. Note: l'm singing on the extreme ends of the spectrum here for demo purposes. You don't need as much drive and vibrato in your sound to sing with open resonance (although resonance does help make vibrato possible!). And stylistically there is a place for breathy singing, too! There's middle ground to explore - it's all about freeing your voice so you can choose the sound you want rather than being limited to one choice!
These sound so cool thanks!^^
@@chriswoods1955 terrific, you're so welcome!
So what if you check all the boxes, your vocal technique is rock solid, but an exercise like this still feels too high and too hard to sing in mixed voice? Focusing attention on something that supports your technique *without concentrating on the actual mechanics of that technique* will help you sing BETTER and with MORE FREEDOM! 🎤✨️ These hand gestures are intentionally supporting my vocal goals (always practice with a goal in mind 😉). And the intentional movement is helping me sing better because: ✨️ I am redirecting my attention to an external point of focus (allowing my motor memory to kick in for my singing technique) ✨️ The movements are releasing both physical and psychological tension as I sing! Do you ever use movement to help free your mixed voice? Let me know, and share this with a singing friend who could use some encouragement! 🎶
Mixed voice, range extension, and vocal stamina exercise all-in-one! 🎤 ✨️ Practicing the same vocal exercise in different ways has several benefits: ✨️improves vocal efficiency ✨️heightened concentration = less boredom + greater vocal outcomes ✨️saves time and keeps practice simple 😉 You don't need to practice all of these variations at once! This is just a sample of several different practice combos you can use depending on the outcome you want to achieve when you're working out your voice
Singing a major scale with different articulations and rhythms will train your voice to move faster! Including a variety of practice techniques like this will improve vocal dexterity and precision. But there's another benefit, too! When you practice in a variety of ways, you'll also stay more engaged and focused while you practice. An attentive practice session always leads to more growth than a bored practice session. 😄🎶
When vibrato happens naturally, it's a sign you have great control of your singing technique! If you're not there yet, don't worry! You will be soon! These vocal exercises can help you discover and release natural vibrato when singing. Here are a few principles to remember: ‣ Vibrato happens naturally when you can sing without tension and release your voice with a steady stream of air. ‣ Engaging your abs with help keep tension out of your throat (which should stay relaxed), and finding your ideal vocal resonance (or "vocal placement") will help, too. ‣ Be mindful of keeping open vowel shapes to create extra amplification space inside your mouth. ‣ Keep your singing energized with the voice and breath moving together!
So niceeee
I'm so happy I found this video, I really needed it, thank you so much. ❤
@@madupercan Fantastic!! I'm thrilled it helped you 😃
If you've been sick (like me) and have been having a tough time getting your singing voice back into shape, this technical exercise is moderately gentle! It will help rebuild vocal stamina while working on: -Vocal fold coordination -Vowel shapes (so important for vocal tone) -Vocal resonance -Note precision If your throat feels sore or swollen, take a break! It's normal to lose some range and flexibility when you've needed an extended break from singing and/or your vocal cords have been swollen or inflamed. Go easy on yourself.
The shape of your vowel changes the sound of your voice!!! Different song styles need different vowel shapes! If you switch between styles or just want a wide variety of colour choices for your vocal tone, it's helpful to practice vowel modification exercises like this one.
Remember to engage your core and keep breath flow even and steady for this vocal exercise.🎤✨️
It is going so smooth
I just love your voice it is go smooth
Great voice
@@KiaraDasgupta thank you so much!
I don't understand, it sounds like you're in head voice. Should I release the chest mechanism when doing these exercises?
Great comment. I'm singing in a head dominant mix, so head voice with chest voice mixed in to strenthen the sound. (Isolated head voice would sound weak and breathy.) You'll want to avoid pushing the chest mechanism into your higher register as this can damage your voice. Mixing the two registers is the safer option, although you can choose to mix in more chest voice than I did here!
Also, this exercise is focused on pharyngeal resonance, which is like your vocal "placement." So it is more about finding that place of freedom and ease where you CAN mix your registers together as you sing higher. 😀
@@truesongvoice thank you so much for clarifying !
