Suffolk County Subwatershed Wastewater Plan - When will we see results?
This is a video commentary on presentations made to the Suffolk County Legislature at their July 25, 2023 General Meeting, which highlights the shortcomings of the wastewater treatment strategies affecting the watersheds and estuaries of Suffolk County, New York, USA. The producer questions the outcomes of reducing nitrogen levels in the coastal waters and the effects on the shellfish industry, seagrasses and toxic algae blooms. Suffolk County was considering a resolution to approve an 1/8 percent sales tax increase to provide infrastructure to further reduce the nitrogen levels in the coastal estuaries.

    My belt exploded today! Going to swap her out next week. I'm on my 4th rotation of hammers, need a new set soon, two have exploded (maybe from some metal entering the mill by accident!~). Thanks for the video, I'm going to rotate and balance the 2 broken hammers so they're equally opposite of each other. Just changed the oil, 300ml out, 800ml in! (first time in a couple years). Will also lube the bearings at the center rotating hubs. Ordered new air and pre filters as well. Great machine that keeps on chugging away, using on an 8-acre estate. take care

    You have a good point about if sewers prevented HABs why just now and not the last 40 years. Was there a recent improvement to the wastewater plants that they now remove nitrogen and phosporus which they didn't do before? I live in Brevard County Florida and we have the Indian River Lagoon which at least on your maps looks similar in that it has a barrier island between the lagoon and the ocean. While here sewage plants get blamed for algae blooms due to spills and septic tanks get blamed for leaching nutrients, my theory is that these are very small compared to surface water runoff and all the nutrients it contains. You may have a similar situation and just by luck or low rainfall no HABs occured that year unrelated to sewered or not.

    • @royalreynolds6886
      @royalreynolds6886 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your comment is on the money. As mentioned in the video there are many 'suspects" that can affect HABs, rainfall is one of them. In relation to the marine waters, we have found that the nutrient levels are actually low, contrary to the narrative that there is an excess. Lacking a sufficient food supply, it is theorized that the clam industry may have failed because of this. Sampling has demonstrated a lack of available algae. Concerning the recent improvement in the sewered area, we take that with a grain of salt. We have raised the lack of correlation in the past and now conveniently there is an improvement in the sewered area with a line of "demarcation". There is a political pressure to promote sewering and we are afraid it may be influencing the "science". We also have a theory relating low nitrogen, rainfall and toxic algae, which is for another day. Just saying.

    Besides the value of preventing ecological damage to Long Island Sound and the Great South Bay, what is the value of pumping treated wastewater into the ground to recharge groundwater levels, if there are nonpoint pollution from industrial, gas stations, dry cleaners, and overall (residential, commercial and industrial) development, where the groundwater cannot be used for potable purposes?

      Good to hear from you. This is basically the same answer I gave to "Serversurfer" above. I am not inclined to drink from a closed loop, unless it's the last resort. I do not trust manmade treatment systems on a large scale. Fortunately, here on Long Island, NY, USA, we have a natural filtration system that is relatively foolproof. It consists of naturally occurring treatment zones; the biozone, vadose, aquifer, riparian and hyporheic zones. Recycling the treated wastewater back through these zones adds an extra layer of protection (knowing this I sleep better at night). My colleagues and I are digging deeper into these issues and are presently constructing a website; feel free to visit it, although it is "under construction". See suffolknywatershedreviewers.org/. Also, your treatment plants may be more trustworthy than ours, considering that you may have German technology and more competent workers. Danke.

    Great job pointing out the spacers have to be maintained in the same positions but whenever I have that belt guard off I grease the main drum bearing on that side. You are supposed to grease them every 6 hours (I think) of run time and getting that guard off and on is a pain in the neck so anytime you need to remove it, grease the bearings on both sides and tighten the belt.

    Actually I paid $2500 shipped to SW Florida 5 years ago so not cheap. As for vines, I grind them all. There is technique required and you must use caution. I have a mountain a sweet potato and some tomato vines out there waiting to be processed. I let them dry for a month or two which makes a huge difference. Again you need to know what you're doing so he was right to caution people just starting out because it could end badly. Learn the machine for a good while and then perhaps start with the vines very carefully.

      Nick, good to hear from you. You reminded me, it's that time year when the snowblower comes out of storage. Takes about 40 minutes to do the driveway. I do not usually bother with less than two inches. It has five forward speeds, which comes in handy. when the snow fall is light, I use the higher speed so I keep a fuller flow of snow and finish quicker. 6 years later and still happy with it.

    First test of my Snow Joe was a massive blizzard that dropped 20+ inches of snow with drifts well over 3ft. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxoHYZbq5g9fkcAtinlTqstNlje-UQkCHN This snow thrower is definitely not designed for this much snow but it powered through it. We did have to knock down taller drifts with a shovel and at times the chute was awkward because snow banks were much higher than it could throw, but still much easier than shoveling. The plus side of the small size is the maneuverability. Easy to lift up to walkways and works in tight spaces near cars. Highly recommend.Note: after assembling it started but did not turn. The belt wasn't in place. Easy fix.

    Hi Royal, I have tried using many of suggestions listed here on your video and many others, including an mild acid spray or vinegar and no luck! I had to cut my zipper compartment on my fishing bag to get inside and I was not happy because it was only 1 year old. I have the same chair and thought, I dont want to break the zipper tab or ruin the chair.........hmmmmmm.......let me try my trusty chemical that works for almost everything..........wanna guess what it is? You have to try it, so find another frozen zipper and grab yourself some DENATURED ALCOHOL, the kind they sell for cooking or cleaning. Apply a little to the zipper where it is frozen and watch it melt away! After trying all the other lubricant style and working the zipper for days, this freed it within seconds! TRY IT and let me know if it works for you!
