This episode is an edited version of a talk I gave to our first years during their Surgical Foundations course. It’s mainly a reminder to myself: this too shall pass.

I am now at seven years since rectal resection…total resection, anastomosis very close to anus. My surgeon Urlik Wallin in Seattle Washington was an expert in this field, just as this surgeon obviously is. Radiation and chemotherapy were highly recommended, but I refused them…Today I remain cancer free as far as I know. In the process of my ileostomy take down, C-Diff was introduced; that was a huge set back; but just as the cancer, I beat that, best as I know. For the first three years after surgery I experimented with numerous techniques and drugs. I used prescription opium and belladonna suppositories, all sorts of cannabis in many configurations, Trazodone, acupuncture, bio-feedback physical therapy, adjustable bed…the list is nearly endless. Three years ago I had a nearly crisis bowel blockage. The bowel was at hyperinflation more from gas than stool. The emergency room/hospital doctor was sharpening his tools to do an APR, but I refused his ambitions… These seven years later this LARS remains! ‘though it is usually (not always) a pale reflection of the daily anxiety inducing negative stimulus and or the nightly sleep interrupting affliction it once was. Seems like time wounds, all heals-sort of? I remain hopeful that all that is LARS will subside eventually, while mindful that the rectum is a very important body part and that living without it is a very real thing! I am open to anyone, especially this surgeon or any other health professional that I can help advise based my own personal journey with this challenge.

Do you also teach your students how to disseminate bacterial infections into the body cavity during surgery? Because you did a GREAT JOB TRYING TO KILL ME SIR. Horrifically, this is the conclusion that I have come to. You MUST have known what you were doing, even the nurse who was there with you MUST have known. HOW COULD ONE NOT KNOW HAVING THE TRAINING THAT YOU HAVE? THE ACREDATIONS THAT YOU HAVE, THE AWARDS AND REPORE THAT YOU HAVE? You HAD to have known what you were doing, because to say that you did NOT know what you were doing while you spread a deadly bacterial infection into my blood..... Would be by proxy admitting that you shouldn't be practicing medicine at all and certainly NOT ALOUD ANYWHERE NEAR A SURGICAL INSTRUMENT.
