Reviewing the art portfolio that got me into Cornell architecture
the “wobbly” lions den problem is actually made by Rubens who i think understands composition better than anyone-in history. so why would he make figues ‘off kilter’ ? ever hear of the “baroque? or even the baroque line? or an oblique line? and what does that mean? a 45 degree line is supposed to present movement becuase its not stable..its becoming and not at rest ..and thats the definition of baroque art. rudolph arnheim talk about this in his famous “art and visual perception” in his dynamic section ..he also talks about entropy as a fundamental principle of art.
Ha! I actually got to reading Arnheim a few weeks ago. I especially love his book on the ‘center’ (which I’ll be making a video on soon) and do know what you are referring to. in the video i was talking about things being bottom heavy and was giving an example for how that could be altered. It never sat with me right for some reason on that painting in particular. But I now know why, with it essentially being a structural line which is like an angled column (also talked about by arnheim), and the dynamics of the figure it gives stability and dynamics at the same time. It also really helps it become the focal point being different from the context. That painting and a lot of baroque are certainly great exceptions to the rules, but still remain bottom heavy. Thanks so much for your comment!
Arnheims last book which wasnt well received is called ‘entropy and art’ and its his attempt at a unified theory of modernism based on the 2nd law of thermodynamics, which says -basically- that things fall apart aka entropy…its an interesting view because we are so busy constructing and stabilizing and framing things into order , when its clear to arnheim that actually art may be trying to express entropy instead. as you can see in his famous book on perception, hes dealing with compositional principles and strategies of dynamics and movement -forces. and i think the success of his book has to do with understanding composition as forces .. or even ‘drama’. what is drama , essentially/? accoirding to aristotle, its conflict or war and arnheim would say the same about composition. arnheim spends alot of time with the oblique shape because asymmetry is a restless unstable form. Disney villains are triangular in shape and cold in color. they are “sinister” , which originall meant “on the left side”. so i would classify basic shapes in terms of their being of equal angles ( a circle, square, rectangle) -aka symmetrical or as ‘sinister. traingles seem to be a mix of both, which describes their popularity in visual design. triangle angles have to be in sum 180 degress. but their angles can vary which provides the third dimension ( depth,).. all forms in perspectives have to have some kind of triangular form. And imho its this reason that rubens employs triangles absolutlely everywhere since they are the only forms that can take us to unknown places back in space. the form changes with a triangle but immobilizes with a symmetrical shape.
Great content....great explanations. Could do with a little less coffee thought. 🤪
Love your drawing, Sargent is my favorite artist, but I struggle replicate his style.
Very well explained, thank you. Clear and understandable for a difficult topic to grasp.
Keep making videos please
just found your channel and you post some incredible stuff, thanks a lot for putting time and effort into this
I don’t understand what you have said that is a better explanation than what others have said. You call everyone a mimic, but you yourself can’t actually explain what is going on other than ‘edges make it round’. Did I miss something here?
Man, I really dig your presentation/editing! smooth, clean and helpful without being distracting
Excellent paintings!! I hope you still check your comments, Do you think I can be still competitive with less paintings and more physical models, photos and other medias? I didn't have much chance to learn drawing and paintings, but I'm really passionate about model making and photography. So I'm planning to include some of my sketches but more of my models and photos. Do you think Cornell will view me equal as other candidates or do you think this will be a drawback for me?
Of course! The portfolio is considered in terms of individuality, thoroughness, design based approach, authenticity, and of course quality. The mediums (painting, sculpture, photography, etc) are mearly an instrument of these fundamental criteria. I was the only one in my class who was so heavy on painting and know several people who had wildly different mediums than I did who also were equally considered and admitted. Hope that helps, best of luck!
@@cjacobsartthank you so much for the advice!
This is so cool! I really love your analysis and it helped me understand the concept of Sargent better.
Glad to hear it!
With Lady Agnew its more a question of composition. The face is the focus point of the whole painting. If that part is not high contrast and tack sharp, the painting looses much of its appeal. The rest is of less importance, other than framing the portrait.
Mistake???? Don't think so
Nope! I can't listen to the slurping.
The drinking is really annoying imao
Lady agnew looked nothing like her portrait.
hello!! you made such a wonderful portfolio, im currently working on mine as well and this really helped! i wanted to ask if you're able to put more than one drawing per slide? i asked my art teacher about it because i put multiple pictures and she thought it was just one picture per slide, so im not sure what to do.
Yes you can (like I did) but they should be thematically related to the narrative you’re presenting through your portfolio, like I talked about in my video. Hope that helps!
Slurp slurp😂
Thank you for this.
Thank you.
Thank you. Terrific.
Thank you.
Wow. Thank you. Narrative structure.
Thank you.
Thank you. I applaud your work, and life’s journey. Co-creative process to art and life. If you are not creating and promoting creating, then you are a destructive force. If you are not seeking harmony, and creating harmonious environments, disorder and chaos will fill the void. Human beings are visually dominant. “Art captures what logic cannot.” Spot on. Just remember, seek harmony and seek peace for yourself and others. Human beings are all connected in a mystical body with God as head. You will be a good father and an extraordinary husband.
Thank you.
Hey brother, just came across your videos and I like your style, it’s a language I can actually understand. I like the points you’ve made. I’m more a musician than a painter, but it’s all an artistic expression in one form or another. Good art doesn’t need to be explained to the viewer or listener. I like that. (You may have said that in another video) What’s cool is that all of your points absolutely apply to musicianship. Thanks for helping me to realize my own talents as well as helping me to see the areas I need to keep improving on, which are all of them. Cheers!
it was about time someone said it! Bravo my friend! This is a complex issue, and not outright mechanical, but yes, I do agree with most of what you said, and it needs to be said often.

What.is the reference book that you are using?
Its is as if a valorant player tried drawing. Slurping, fidgeting, soft hands, swearing.

It’s a great painting. Nowhere near the most powerful ever lol.
Beautiful. A feast for the eyes.
Can you suggest any books for the curious? Love to hear your pics.
Yes, were you interested in architecture or art?

Good video but Can you please fix the surface you are drawing on? it will be much better
I didn't click on this to listen to you slurp tea
You have a mic pointed at your self but because you move around so much you might want to invest in a shotgun mic on a boom above you with a muffle and a tape on mic. Then you lay all three into a pre amp. When you finish recoding your script, or if you go off the cuff then when you finish a take, go back and listen to the three tracks and edit them together taking the clearest sections. Then adjust the volume of each section to normalize it. I might also recommend some onscreen text, in video editing, to underline your points and maybe breaking your video into chapters. All that being said, the information on offer here is excellent. Thank you very much and please take this as constructive criticism in the best spirit.
Great video and makes sense. I’m trying to imagine how I would derive meaning without hierarchy of values and it just seems chaotic and impossible to do so. But if someone has a mental model capable of sense/meaning making without a value hierarchy I would be very interested in learning more about it.
In the psychological sense you need a value hierarchy to even know where to point your eyes, so it makes sense in art that that light and dark would manifest this quality as well
is that intro inspired by the toby maguire spiderman movies, it looked rll cool
Tricky part is having the figures look like they're in motion (putting them off balance) while keeping a nice bottom heavy visual weight. I guess lighting can be used in a way so that the light shapes read as being bottom heavy while the figure may not be bottom heavy.
