S4E19: Educational Teams Bridging School & Family Communication w/ Leah Mermelstein & Dr. Jen Gioia
In this episode, I sit down with literacy expert Leah Mermelstein (www.leahmermelstein.com/) and school neuropsychologist Dr. Jennifer Gioia (www.dcfagan.com) to explore how educators can better support students who are "stuck" in their learning journey. Together, we unpack how schools can build effective support systems directly into their educational framework through three core elements: dedicated time for team dialogue, appropriate resources and curriculum, and shared knowledge of research-based practices.
The conversation delves into practical strategies for:
➡️breaking down silos between different educational settings,
➡️fostering meaningful collaboration between families and schools,
➡️and ensuring equitable access to student support.
Leah shares insights from her extensive experience in literacy consulting and tutoring, while Jen offers valuable perspectives on neuropsychological evaluation and empowering both families and students with knowledge about the educational system.
Whether you're an educator, administrator, specialist, or caregiver, this episode offers you actionable strategies for creating unified teams that can effectively support every student's learning journey while addressing both individual needs and systemic barriers to success.

Season 4 Trailer - Schoolutions: Coaching and Teaching Strategies
Brilliant discussion among experienced education professionals, friends and mothers. Thank you for your dedication to helping every student succeed.
I love learning with Leah and Jen. Such bright lights on our profession.
Thank you for providing your "Schoolutions" episodes on this TH-cam channel. I look forward to hearing your amazing guests and support education for ALL students.
Thank you for being such a loyal follower.
Thank all educators for doing the real, hard work for our children and grandkids.
Yes! Our work is not done until all students have access to learning and feel included.
Olivia, thank you for your focus on helping our children become prepared for life. Drawing upon your recent conversation with Kass Minor, "The answers are here, we just need to listen to our kids!" You point out that we need to give our children autonomy, help them feel heard, and let them discover how to become the "author of your own life". I agree, thank you!
Thank you!
This left me teary eyed and so very proud of you both for the hard work you love and share honestly with others 💞
Thank you!
The quality of your video is very good, you do a lot of hard work for business but you are not getting views because of not doing proper SEO of the video. Even with so much effort, no result is coming. I am a TH-cam SEO Expert. And I have been successfully working in this sector for a long time. If you know more details please Drop a reply.
I was struck by today's analogy of teaching "How to think, not What to think" . You identify many ideas on encouraging students to do the research using a variety of texts. What a daring thought; ask the student what they should read! Thank you for sharing your insights!
Thank you! I am so lucky to coach alongside experts in our field and see the impact their teaching has on students of all ages.
This read like a story of " moving on, to give back more!" It was very evident to me that while Jennifer moved on from the classrooms, she did so to better nurture the students she left behind. What an honor to hear you two educators discover/create then support pathways that work for all school children, even if it means changing jobs to achieve that better. Thank you both Jennifer and Olivia.
@@jimungvarsky6865 thank you! Mackin is such a wonderful company and they are lucky to have Jen on their team.
Thank you Olivia as you touched my heart reminding me how your work with Stephanie and "repetition learning" appeared in my life over 4 decades ago....with you. You loved our bedtime reading of the children's book, "We Help Mommy". You shocked us as you would "read" the pages perfectly at such an early age! Apparently your young brain was listening and learning very early as we read to you, so you memorized the words and pages, "reading" them back to us during your bedtime stories. It works, even if we don't understand how or why. thank you.
Thank you!
Absolutely ❤
I love how you highlighted building trust could be as simple as providing 5-10 minutes after last class to allow teachers time to get something to drink or use bathroom facilities! It shows awareness and respect for the nonstop teaching schedules and empathy that you want them to arrive for your discussion refreshed and ready to contribute. thank you
We cannot nurture the children in our care in the ways they need if we do not care for each other as grown-ups, right?
I love this conversation with Denise/Olivia introducing this "3 student protocol" as a realistic approach to become more effective working with groups. This is a wonderful way to humanize the teaching practice, in math or any other course!
We cannot humanize the teaching practice enough! We all learn better if we feel tended to.
Love your focus on growth over mastery. Thank you for this Friday extension of Monday's podcast and how you see it play out in your classrooms.
Thanks for tuning in!
Felt like my College classrooms, listening to your shared brilliance. Especially grateful for your discussion about student autonomy and it's importance for motivation. Thank you for allowing for many right ways to making education work for all students.
Thank you!
One of the best videos/topics ideology/socially sustainable presentations I have ever experienced. Yes to all.
Thank you so much!
This podcast was both humbling for me yet inspirational as I realized that within your coaching groups most of you would see how each part of this lesson makes so much sense. I love how you both acknowledge that in spite of your years of teaching and coaching experience, it's more important than ever to allow yourself to be vulnerable, a risk taker , and spend time in your coaching circles working on things you haven't figured out yet! This is great leadership by example and a great way to engage everyone in the coaching circle. I stole this line today..."say less, so we can reflect more!" Thank you, thank you.
Yes! So much of our work centers on being reflective and listening. Thank you for your insights.
Yes! The inquiry stance for coaching (and teaching and learning! is what keeps it fresh! Fail forward! Together!

Your bonus episode made me ask if I'm following your examples and asking enough questions of those I want to help. Instead of seeing things from the same (my) perspective, should I be developing and asking better questions to see (their) perspective and perhaps discover a more effective way to learn together. Love the challenge.
I absolutely love that this is your takeaway from this episode. "...should I be developing and asking better questions to see their perspective and perhaps discover a more effective way to learn together." This is huge, and I think if everyone paused to listen more and ask questions they don't already know the answers to, our world would be much less divisive right now.
Wow, I love the diversity of your podcast guests and today I am blessed to become aware of your friend Christa's amazing work blending reading and farming and children. Who would've thought that's possible! I'm so happy that my grandson's have the opportunity to learn how they can make healthy food and land care a part of their life. You share so much more in this podcast, but I'm just so happy that my grandkids love books and can see more choices they'll have available about where they live, what they will eat and why. Thank you both. Love this.
Yes! Ben and Henry have benefitted from Christa's work with our community. Henry just visited The Learning Farm last year and loved it.
The importance of asking questions to better understand the speaker's intent.🤗 Thank you.
I love how Coaches Kerrie and Olivia discuss Kerrie's 8 phase coaching cycle: Spark, Question, Reality, Refine, Plan, Trial, Capture and Intention. Most importantly, they emphasize that it starts and ends with "Kids". Thank you both for your insights and shared experience.
Thank YOU!
A very thoughtful podcast about managing our conversations after the elections! Thank you for shining your flashlight on how our behaviors can support or harm the students in our schools or homes🏆
Our kids deserve the world. Teaching them how to think, not what to think.
Olivia, thank you for sharing this post election episode. I encountered many people with different reactions and I had to personally go through many of the issues you raise in your podcast to choose my focus and how to best manage my feelings and conversations. Thank you
I'm glad it was helpful. :)
Love your work
Thank you!
Or your honesty and shared experience on smart phones for young students in school
❤ Thank you for helping me realize from your discussion, that my podcast notes over 4 years, reflect my brain's way to capture important ideas from a teacher/daughter that I love🤗
Thank you!! Shared!!
Thank you!! 😊
Brilliant conversation this am, highlighting many pros and cons re: smartphones in schools. My takeaway...bring decision-making down to local level to allow greater flexibility. Thought provoking, with real concern for what the monitoring requires! Think of the pros and cons parents must deal with for their own 7, 12 and 17 yr old students. No one size fits all.🏆
Thank you!
Yup that's my thinking behind it!
@@michaelbhorn thank you for taking the time to have the conversation!
Your content is good.
@@FinanceTips-vg9nn thank you!
Thank you and Julie for discussing important ways to get the greatest team benefit for each student. Assuring that all parts of the student's strengths and weaknesses are evaluated, not simply numbers or grades. 🏆
Yes! Asset-based thinking is the best place to begin our conversations regarding learning.
I was so impressed with how your conversation with Jennifer shared very detailed structures for teachers yet leaves spaces for teacher autonomy. Structure with flexibility if you will. Your conversation tells me you both are " a teacher's teacher🏆"
Thank you!
I loved this episode of Schoolutions! Nawal and Dr. Schlessinger’s insights on how language shapes the classroom environment and family dynamics were both inspiring and practical. Their discussion highlighted the importance of intentional communication and how small shifts in our words can build trust and stronger relationships with students and their families. I’m definitely taking some of these strategies back to my classroom. Thank you for such a valuable conversation! #fduedtech
Thank you! Your feedback is incredibly valuable. I have also learned so much from Nawal and Sarah. Sarah's book was just released, and Nawal's book is also incredible (both are linked in the episode description). How fortunate are we to have colleagues in the field doing this important work?
Brilliant discussion and so wonderful to see all of you collaborating to enlighten us further🏆
Thank you!
Breathtaking conversation! The depth and vulnerability in this podcast touches my heart in so many ways, I can't isolate just a few. You owe it to yourself to enjoy this whole conversation and be inspired by this military family💕
Thank you! I really loved this vulnerable conversation. Meg and Brett are incredible.
What a wonderful conversation with Morgan Davis to highlight the importance of early classroom coaching visits getting to "know" each teacher and their unique issues, before making suggestions. I loved how you describe this coaching role as being the "eyes and ears of goodness" distinct from the evaluation roles by others done at a different time. Thank you both.
Thank you! Morgan offers SO many strategies for meeting each of the teachers that she coaches where they are. I love that she commits to visiting all of her teachers during the first two weeks of school with an asset-based mindset.
Brilliant start to a new school year with this conversation with Trevor Muirs. Your experience and love for your students fills my heart with hope. Thank you both.
Thank you for tuning in. So many great tips and advice to transfer to classrooms right away!
This guys work is a sham. There is no proper quantitative or empirical proof that it does anything for outcomes past "engagement". My daughter was in a "thinking classroom" and she HATED it, since she can actually do some math and likes to LEARN by teachers who TEACH. Saying that kids aren't "thinking" through direct instruction is just pure stupidity. Anything can be "research based", but what you want is EVIDENCE BASED.
I can't imagine how frustrating that experience was for your daughter and you as her caregiver. I have the privilege of serving a school district that has done a year-long study of Peter's BTC approach alongside implementing a new math curriculum. Teachers innovated and adapted their daily direct whole and small group instruction for their students based on exit tickets at the end of each day. Sadly, like all approaches to instruction, unless the professional learning is tied back to evidence of student learning, it will fall short of meeting all students' needs.
I wish this conversation were available in Spanish! We live in Spain, and the understanding of neurodivergence is so far behind... I feel that listening to this would help so many teachers here (and everywhere)! Thank you to both of you!

Just as you share that School Districts often forget to ponder the "Why?" teachers must show up for kids, you lead by example here in this Season 3 wrap-up episode! Thank you for building your 3 year library of podcasts with diverse topics and experts. I appreciate your emphasis on "parallel practice". That's not, 'do as I say, not as I do'. Rather, I will lead by example and do as I ask you to do and we'll both learn together....and know why we're adjusting daily plans, because we're monitoring everyone's progress and adjusting lessons when needed. Thank you for all the new lessons shared this past year 3 and I look forward to the new Season 4 this Fall.
Thank YOU for watching, sharing, and offering such thoughtful insights throughout the seasons. 💕
A refreshing perspective
So important. 😊
While this podcast approached 1 hour, it flew by because you both are so excited and knowledgeable with this work! I love how you show your joy of reading and working with so many great educators/authors. You sound a bit rogue daring to crush silos, in an effort to create better conditions for learning for all students! Again, I hear you both emphasizing less time "talking" in the classroom and more time discovering each child's secret code to their engagement and joy of learning! I can see how much you love your work and students. You dare to explore unique ways to reach even those special needs students and see that they often have special gifts as learners. Fabulous Podcast, both of you. Thank you , thank you.
Thank you! The conversation flew by and it was such an honor to host Jen and highlight her important work.

Complacency is not an acceptable choice for ALL students. Thank you both for discussing what's at stake, if we don't see that ALL students matter!
Yes! This was such a powerful conversation. I also appreciated Dr. Muhammad's questions: How dissatisfied is a school with students not learning? What's your appetite for failure?
What a great way to wrap this series! We have to know the "Why?" behind this work to serve our students best! Thank you Livi and Wendy for sharing your wisdom with us all.

Thank you! Part II will release on 5/20. I look forward to hearing what you think. 😊
Your focus on the importance of getting input from ALL of the students' teachers/contacts hit the mark for me. If ALL caregivers are part of the input, the clearest picture of a child's ability to read/comprehend will emerge and targeted next steps will assure steady progress, rather than "one size fits all teaching" approach. Thank you both for encouraging us all to make time to see if our parenting/teaching approaches are WORKING! Ask qustions. Observe. Role play. Make sure to check on ALL of the students' caregivers. Thank you both.
Yes! It's also wonderful to have multiple perspectives based on people's experiences and expertise. As a colleague said to me a while ago, you're much less likely to want to burn down a house that you helped to design and build.
