Hamilton couple adopt possum.
มุมมอง 29K9 ปีที่แล้ว
Possums are public enemy number one when it comes to our native species, but one Hamilton woman finds at least one of them a little more endearing. Courtney Harper's adopted a baby Possum after her boyfriend shot its mother, and brought the newborn home. Two and a half years later, Poss is part of the family. Janika ter Ellen went to meet them.
Doritos 😂
I freaking love Possums <3
❤😍
I live in NZ and over the years have raised several orphaned possums. This began in the '70s when I was a kid on a farm and my most recent rescue was around 2009. Interesting that it says above that their possum was kept legally - the local vet told me that since they're a pest here it's illegal to keep them and they can't provide treatment or assistance or they'd lose their veterinary licence. So one of the kids & I took possum down to the police station to find out more. The guy we spoke to didn't know what the law was re possums but said he's Australian and he reckons everyone should have one! 😀 I've heard since that perhaps you can apply to MAF for a licence to keep a possum but they're not keen on giving them out. Does anyone know for sure?
They are so intelligent. If their baby dies, they'll grieve for months, searching every night. They love their bubbas. And they're pollinators here in Oz ❤ so we need them. Australia has the largest number of tree hollow dependant species in the world because it was unlogged here for so long. Now they have been forced into the burbs to find rooves so they don't die and subsist off scraps. They won't pee or poo in the roof unless they're very sick. People really don't treat them well and it's very upsetting. It breaks my heart. They are absolutely beautiful animals.
Possums are absolutely gorgeous creatures, my partner and I have about 6 living in our yard and 3 or 4 have come up to us and one mamma has also showed us her baby. They bring us so much joy, they are so funny and cute and we adore them!
Seems in Australia "pest" and "pet" can be the same, both in pronunciation and reality.
I’m sorry, did they say that possums live 30 YEARS?! 😮
It seems the oldest known brushtail lived 17 in captivity.
Leave them alone, wild, they are experts in survival, petting wild animals is the worse, no excuse!
Are they completely food driven or is there any actual affection from possums?
I just found a baby one who was on its mum who was hit by a car, I managed to care for him for a few days and now he’s at a foster care , I might be able to have him back once he’s grown more, I live in ten acres with a fully enclosed area outside that would suit! Watching this makes me think I could adopt him permanently!
this thing probably stains the floor and the guy asks himself every day why the hell he brought it home
they are so bad for the environment. they kill New Zealand birds and strip the leaves of trees.
That cute pinky snoot 🥺
she’ll be right m8
Possums are under rated. We had a beautiful female, she’d introduce her babies. I’m blind, when feeding she’d reach out with her paw and guide my hand. She was with us for a decade, a very longtime for a wild possum.
I laugh at the haters , something like this is an awesome story I think they are awesome animals,
filthy animal
You are arnt you.
Filthy animal
Pest
Humans are the real pests more dangerous destructive kill destroy everything on the planet the majority of humans are inherently evil
They’re nocturnal and shouldn’t be up in the day - also grapes are toxic for possums in large quantities.
1:45 NEVER USE YOUR MOUTH NEAR A POSSUM ESPECIALLY KISSING!!!! Possums, which have a lifespan of 15 years, can carry deadly diseases easily transmitted to humans, including , which can cause abscesses, fistulas, headaches, vomiting and renal failure
Huh. I shoot those. It would be interesting if I am able to get a baby as a pet

Have u still got found 1 in my van and now it won't leve me follows me can I wash it
What a cute, fuzzy critter. Here in the states they're ugly as sin, but this little guy is a charmer.
I want to give him lots and lots of kisses!
It's a possum 😁
sad they killed his mother, but hard thing in this country as they're treated as pests. Im so in love with their cuteness I'd love to adopt one in the future.
well i mean they are treated as pests as they are.
North American possums look like massive rats who have been hooked on meth for 5 years
I have a Virginia Possum that is my heart.❤
A wild animal belongs in the wild!
Except in New Zealand wild possums are considered a pest and are killed as a result. Having it as a pet is sadly of the possum's best interest here in NZ.
here in nz they are pests. its either shoot it or take it in
possums are so adorable
so so cute .wd all need to be more loving to these sweet outdoor animals..Please afterall they are Blessed by the best!
Adorable but helping our native species go extinct isn’t right Humans Possums Rodents NZs Pest order

Nice thanks for this. I will use this video as a reference for a chain saw carving i'm going to do.
Possums are awesome. I remember an encounter with a Mother and her baby while living in Ferntree Gully. I just wish I had some fruit at the time, I would love to have helped them with some fruit. Gliders are beautiful also, up around the Healesville area late at night they are active.
(Sorry, I had a comment but accidentally deleted it), Ferntree Gully, Healesville, are among some of the greatest suburbs within the world, and I can't wait to visit. The possums of the night are a great memory I have of those areas. Good to learn about the Healesville possum also…
@@michaelvangulik85 I’m in Belgrave; it’s just as good
Our north American Opossums, probably a very very distant relative, look completely different than this one and are much more sedate. My guy sleeps about 20 hours every day! Very easy to care for.
The South American ones (which are very close relatives to the North American species, but are very distant relatives of Aus/NZ ones) look similar to these though, and have varying levels of energy by species. Some are pretty similar to these
Just wondering if anyone in NZ actually believes the propaganda about possums eating the island to death? I have around 10 in my small yard each night and got to know them all - beautiful, intelligent animals. We haven't lost a single plant to over grazing. I wonder if the NZ Govt. is actually more worried about protecting industry than nature. There are probably a lot of vested interests from farmers to the 1080 poison industry (NZ is responsible for 90% of the world's 1080 use each year).
I thought the problem was that they eat native bird eggs and young?
@@olson5000 they do ALL of those at once :D
And they spread diseases to trees and cattle
I've seen plenty of possum damage. Puriri trees stripped bare.
Newzealand needs wild mammals. The government don't want wild mammals they want you reliant on them. Most farms are owned by Fontera. Some of fonterras profit goes to the government. Hunters don't pay farms so the government isn't happy.
The possum that live where I am in Louisiana are extremely ugly, weird to see one like this.
Don't you like your Opossums? lol
@@NathanChisholm041 lol I dont hate them, definitely wouldn't kill them or anything. But good lord are they ugly xD
@@WolfSSSGaming LOL
oh here in nz we have the bush tail possums. from what i have heard they are related to kangaroos unlike normal possums
It looks like my mom...i mean the possum
WHY CAN'T NORTH AMERICAN OPOSSUMS BE THIS CUTE TT_TT
agreed, although kinda cute, the possum is cuter than the opossum
Possums in America are rat and Nutella enlarged hybrid.
Lol, I think they are as cute in their own way!
Because they're completely different animals.
