Pine Martens at play June 2015
I felt a little selfish keeping these Pine Marten moments to myself. I hope you enjoy my June evenings entertainment as much as I do.

If it smokes out. Try opening a door it will help the smoke draw up the chimney

    Are you using antrhacite coal?

I gave up on ‘Boy Scout’ fire lighting a long time ago. I recommend this method for lighting up steam locomotives👍 as used on South African Railways: charge the grate with coal, then broken pallets, then smaller wood and LAST, a paraffin soaked cloth.

Mankind has loved the comfort, warmth and security of an open fire for thousands and thousands of years - we’re hardwired to be drawn to it. Love the video.

Too right as me and my parents was looking for a new fire to replace our shitty gas one and watched a sales man get the log burner going.

this is great. most coal fire videos show someone lighting a wood fire then smothering it with coal making a lot of smoke. this way is definitely superior

Don't you burn wood at all as big chunks of wood one side

. . . such an open chimney is nice to look - but it is the most unefficient way to burn any fuel / heat a house . . .

Lovely method. I'm very upset that they're banning house coal in the UK. Do you think there'll still be a way to get it after the ban?

You will be able to purchase Smokeless coal directly from a whole sale distributor. I belive welsh coal will still be legal to burn

when you burn wood from the top down the radiant heat heats the coal which warms up and it exhudes its volitiles.....as a gas,the draught pulls the volitile combustable gas tho and up the fire to be burnt by the top bright hot flame on top of the fire releasing a lot of energy....in the case of a strictly wood only fire 60% more heat energy is obtained for the same amount of wood ....in the cas e of coal, which is useually around 40 % volitile, that to is pulled through the fie to be burned from the top.so burning by this method you not only get way more heat....between 40% and 60 %...but it burns or incinerates everything and burns very clean and without pollution....or as the man said, chimney has not needed to be cleaned in 34 years....and not smell or soot....top down burn MIGHT work on semi volitile coal, such as welsh dry steam coal, but definately not work on premium anthracite coal, because the volitility is less than 9%...hope the brief explain helps you to get your head around it

Does that mean, for smokeless coal its better to use wood then coal on top?

he is using bituminius house coal, its smokey and has 35% volitility you would not get away with that in a smoke control area but it might i say might work with welsh dry steam coal ,essentialy a young anthracite with 14% volitility,as you can use it in smoke control zones.......welsh dry steam coal nuts,i expect the coal flame to be around 6 or so inches as it has halve the volitility and cost is about £278 metric ton delived to door in 40 x 25 kg bagson pallet.....tho have not tried to burn welsh dry steam nut upside down myself...tho an interesting idea to have if your in a smoke control zone

I have watched your video, thank you. I can see there are many similarities between your method and GotNoEvidence’s method. I think your method seems much quicker and uses less materials, is less smokey and much easier all round. I would be really interested to understand the science behind the process, can you enlighten me? I have asked GotNoEvidence to do the same. Thank you.
