    Awesome documentary! I really enjoyed it, thank you!!! From factories all the way up to the individual boutique Master Luthiers, we truly are living in the golden age of lutherie. There are SO many great builders out there now, using various philosophies, from old-school traditional craftsmanship, and then there's other luthiers with so many innovations................... it's mind boggling. While I've always admired Master Luthiers like Danny Davis, Robin Boucher, and Bob Thompson ( just to name a few ), I also appreciate the fact that there are quite a few companies who are now making incredible factory made guitars, using the best tonewoods to produce guitars that are actually as good if not better than the big name factories ( such as Martin and Taylor ).................at a fraction of the price. While they aren't quite as good as the masterpieces coming from the boutique builders, they are very consistent with a level of quality that virtually any guitarist would be pleased with. The boutique instruments are very expensive, and they SHOULD be. But the good news today, is the fact ya no longer have to be rich or take out a 2nd mortgage on the house in order to own & play an outstanding guitar........or even several. We've come a long way for sure, and the current state of the guitar industry has resulted in a win/win situation for every budget.

    Is it solid back and sides on both? Are they both hand voiced? How does the voicing process reflect in the import model the way you would voice it? Some companies like Eastman hand voice while making production guitars, Furch and Breedlove (made in Bend, not their imports) have a way to be consistent as well using technology.

  • @scottfishkind5335
    @scottfishkind5335 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would have to hear this in person A-B’d against other pickup’s like an LRBaggs Anthem or others. Through my headphones it sounds great but on TH-cam it’s hard to distinguish between it and other high quality pickups. Not a knock, I know it’s never the same listening on TH-cam as in person.

    • @morrisonguitarshop8937
      @morrisonguitarshop8937 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for tuning in! We have had unanimously positive feedback on our pickup when observed and played in person... Nobody else will tell you this, but many of today's pickups from the major manufacturers are specifically voiced to sound good through your headphones or computer speakers, because for most consumers a video or soundbite is going to be their only impression of a pickup before they order it online. Additionally, merely listening to a pickup, even in person, is one thing - playing it and getting it to really feel like an acoustic guitar is another. Many folks consider our pickup similar to a Baggs Anthem because of the undersaddle & mic combination, and are sometimes already the proud owner of an Anthem and are happy with it... until they play ours. ;) Regarding the video, if we were aiming for a pickup to sound great through headphones, we would revoice it. But our goal is the ultimate live-use pickup. Furthermore, we could have doctored our video, but we didn't. Take care!

      @@morrisonguitarshop8937I appreciate your response. I was in no way criticizing your pickup. I would love the opportunity to hear your guitars and pickup in person. I modified my above response to be worded better, I apologize for not being more thoughtful with my initial comment. I am very impressed with your content as you seem extremely passionate, knowledgeable, and sincere about your work and that really resonates with me! The problem with TH-cam is that it definitely does something to the sound so it gives an approximation at best of the sound. You can usually hear when something sounds truly awful but when it comes to higher end, guitars and pickups the subtleties often get lost in translation. I’m glad I found your channel and have learned about your guitars. I’m in the Ann Arbor Michigan area so I’m not near your store unfortunately. You may consider trying to have Elderly instruments in Lansing, Michigan carry your production guitars as they are highly reputable and have a large room of high end instruments as well as those in the more affordable range in the main part of the store. I purchased my Furch Yellow Master’s Choice there, which is an incredible guitar, as well as a Walden and Breedlove, which were both sub 1k. I wish Morrison Guitars much success and hope your guitars get the distribution and recognition they deserve!! I also have subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing/hearing more content!

    I agree with everything you are saying. People get seduced by the label on the headstock, pretty aesthetics (bling, fancy woods), and BS claims (V-class bracing improves intonation). Of course quality tonewoods make a difference if they are voiced by some who know what they are doing, but great tonewoods can also sound bland if not voiced well! It sounds like the consignment guitar is a Taylor builder’s edition with that hideous expression system pickup. I bought a Walden G630CE that was under $700 that is better than many Taylor’s and my Furch Yellow Master’s Choice blows most, if not all, Taylor’s out of the water and it was less than 3K and is boutique quality! The guitar you are playing in this video sounds balanced and rich, well done!

    KnK pickups are great too. I see suttle differences between the two. Guitar B is the USA n A is the one americans aren't building for you. Your guitar is crisp n clear. I don't know how they can build it that cheap in china. Hope kids aren't slaving over them! I personally would make a name for the family n build here in America! You want the guitar ...pay for the quality is my opinion. Thanks for the video 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

    For amatuer builders: THIS VIDEO IS EVERYTHING THAT YOU SHOULD NOT DO. Still a valuable video. Just don't follow these techniques. Terrible tools, poor glue-ups, terrible use of routers and a lack of understanding of CNC tooling. This is what happens when a "garage band decides to build guitars and the kid from video editing school at the local college come together because, "they build things and know how to film content." Just because you can.........does not mean you should. There currently is "no old growth honduras mahogany." This comment is utter bull puckey Old growth honduras mahogany has not been available since the early 50s. I challenge these guys to show me how they "acquire a wood that has not existed since the golden era of guitar building" Show me the source and paperwork. And show us the fees you've paid since Obama's Administration. And for the love of all things holy, please do not lie and say you "have a stash." And if you go that route............mahogany is not all the same. Just because you stacked some mahongany with other mahogany does not make all that mahogany the same. Router tables are not shapers Clamps are not jigs. And a STICKER on the Headstock??? Are you kidding me. YOu use lacquer because it is easy. And then you apply that finish in a poor manner. God bless. this video is painful to watch. ANd you can't buff a .004 thick lacquer or 4 mil (think about that thickness: ROTFLMAO) You'd burn right thru it. But 4 mil would be thick enough to skate on. These fools are not even using any kind of dust collection. Which tells me that they are hacks and bad at being "hacks' These kind of videos do great harm to legitimate builders. Kudos to them for "hitting all the "key word phrases." But 99.99% of this video is bull puckey. What "bone" do you use? Do you have an old human skull laying around next to your "Old growth honduras mahongany" that you use for "your bone nut." Plek machines are fantastic. The fact that you DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT CONFIRMS THE PREVIOUS WORDS I'VE WRITTEN. And then your speech about "acoustic guitar pickups" is an embarrasment to everyone. Stop. Stop. Stop. STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP

    I have made about 12 guitars, some electric and the others acoustic. I got old pianos for free and used the Sitka spruce out of the soundboard for tops and other woods from the piano for back and sides. Being in NZ the cost of shipping quality guitar wood here is prohibitive. I realised after quite a few acoustic builds you need a strong wood like Mahogany etc for the sides and backs so the guitar has good structural integrity as that contributes not only to the sound quality but it’s ability to stop creep when the guitar distorts under string tension. I made a jig to work out the neck angle and the alignment to the centreline of the top. I ended up making a screw on neck which could be easily removed if it needed a neck reset if the action got too high. I found the most challenging job was cutting an accurate binding channel especially with the radiuses built into the top and back. I know from experience it is a very time consuming job but interesting going through all the stages one by one. It’s not till you string it up and hit those first chords whether it sounds really good or average. I just specialise in repairs and setups mostly now and have fitted many fishman pre sys to guitars which people seem happy with. It looks like you put a lot of care and attention to your guitar builds so well done as the guitar factories have tooling for every step of the way nowadays.🤗🤗🤗

    What amazing work. You are a true craftsman! My question is on average, how long does it take to make a guitar and secondly, where/how did you learn such craftsmanship? Thank you for adding beauty in a world that really needs it.
