The future is coming true, not as a message of delays, but of many birds in a tree. There is roadkill in the street outside my house. A flock of turkey vultures is swooping back and forth past my window every time a car approaches.

The future came true, mostly, a few days later. Unexpectedly, that Friday, I drove to St. Helena to renew my Allstate auto insurance. I found myself in unfamiliar territory, on a winding road, uncertain of my whereabouts. I drove past Lake Berryessa and Lake Hennessey. The rain was not happening, though.

This event happened to me yesterday, but in an unexpected way. I was woken up from an afternoon nap by the shrill sounds of the carbon monoxide monitor beeping. Today, PG&E sent an employee to inspect the appliances in my house. It was the water heater in the laundry room that set off the CO monitor. Today, I'm thinking this is the event predicted by the coffee cup.

Since painting Underwater in 2010, I've learned how to do shamanic journeying. I now know that shamanic journeys can result in remote viewing. This is what I think happened. In 2010, by the lengthy means of deep meditation, I passed through the barrier between ordinary reality and nonordinary reality, unintentionally journeyed to Lewis Stewart's office, saw the photograph hanging over his desk, returned to ordinary reality and painted a memory of what I saw.
