Paragliding Eagle Rock 16 Nov 2024
My second trip down to Eagle Rock. Not as many people this weekend. I think there were 6 paragliders total and 1 hang glider that was packing up as we arrived. The conditions were wonderful for paragliding. I was instantly above the ridge and probably could have stayed up for ages, but I wanted to judge the glide to the LZ before I started soaring on the ridge lift AWAY from the LZ.

This is my first flight since graduating from Utah Paragliding with my P2. It is my first time flying in Virginia with all these trees!!! Not going to lie, I was a little scared to end up landing in one! I went down to Eagle's Rock with my friend Adam to meet the Skywackers and a bunch of other pilots came in too! 17 people showed up in total! :D It was great to meet so many people and everyone...

10 Aug 2024 Tandem Lesson at Lookout Mountain Flight Park. This was the first time I learned about turning! My mind was blown to learn that you set a turn rate and that if you don't do anything it will keep turning at the rate you set! o.O

I guess technically my 10th "lesson." But 9 was on the small hill just to check out my H1 skills (I didn't get videos). This was my first day on "the big hill" at Lookout Mountain training hills. I was thrown straight into the H2 skills checks (various turns). Haha, this was my first time turning! I only ever flew straight at BlueSky (least I end up in the beans or corn!). But I took to it supe...

The last lesson for my P2! This is the first flight of the day. My risers hit the GoPro on launch :P Sorry for the bad angle. It's been a fun two weeks - although a lot of para-waiting for the weather. For the final lesson we took a field trip away from Point of the Mountain down to West Mountain for a mountain launch and attempt to find some thermals - just a little one. The wind was a bit too...

For the final lesson we took a field trip away from Point of the Mountain down to West Mountain for a mountain launch and attempt to find some thermals - just a little one. The wind was a bit too strong and the thermals were pushed over. But it was still an amazing time! Sorry I forgot to turn...

I have been taking Paragliding lessons at Point of the Mountain, Utah for a week now. Unfortunately the weather has been pretty poor. But thankfully Jonathan and Hal at Utah Paragliding are the best teachers in the world and took us on a field trip an hour away where the winds were better. My friend Adam was first off the hill, then me, then my son Marcus and finally my father. Three generation...
Hang Gliding - Lesson8 - Kitty Hawk Kites
มุมมอง 3397 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my first lesson since losing my hang gliding instructor, Steve Wendt. With Steve gone, I traveled to his old stomping grounds, Kitty Hawk Kites. He used to teach there, so it was a good place to go to continue my hang gliding journey. I did the beginner class and got 5 flights. Unfortunately I didn't get any but the final one. :) One of the other students couldn't figure out my phone. h...

December 10th, 2023. My son really wants to learn paragliding so I figured I would see what it was like before signing him up for lessons. :) My father met me to watch and take the videos. Hal Frankin from Utah Paragliding (utahparagliding.com/) was my instructor. He was great! My father has been flying for decades and still picked up some new tips. It was a lot of fun - easier than hang glidin...
Hang Gliding 7th Lesson

11 Nov 2023. I was with 3 first time students: my son and two awesome guys that totally turned the fun up to 11. I hope I get to see you guys in the sky again. So the reason for fewer gopro videos is I put it on the Eaglette to get the new people's first flights. :) But this is the lesson Steve said I can take the H1 exam! Woohoo, time to be a rated (beginner) pilot! :D

5 November 2023 - beautiful day. Winds were light and variable. Supposed to be out of the north but took all morning to get there. Actually had a cross tail on some of my flights :P bleh. But at least my leg injury healed in a week and I didn't re-injure it. :)
Hang Gliding 5th Lesson

Graduated up to the Wills Wing Alpha this lesson! I was so happy. I get to fly a modern wing! Although part of me misses the old Eaglette. :) I got 6 flights in, but the GoPro missed the first and last. I did strain a muscle on #4, but pushed through two more, before having to stop. Hopefully I heal fast and get back in the air!

The 4th lesson. Winds picked up and made it so we couldn't continue. I only got two flights in but I got to meet two more advance students! It was really cool seeing them get a couple of hundred feet high! I can't wait to join them!

How does it work when the student is more advanced? In powered flight and in glider training, my instructors had me handling the aircraft, radio, etc. most of the time. Is the same true in tandem HG instruction?

nice! Tim is an excellent instructor and he was one of the people that taught me the zero degree turn (you'll need it when you start ridge soaring). Also aerotowing gets you used to the speed your glider can go and how to make a good DBF with speed when you start to fly more turbulent conditions (instead of floating in at trim the entire final) so you can properly feel ground effect for your flare. Excellent job and I hope you remember the box pattern! You'll need it when you solo off the mountain!

We learn from our mistakes, the trick is keeping those mistakes minor as demonstrated when you got a bit off track. Learning is a very narrow window but eventually, and when you're ready, the world of soaring like a bird expands far and wide. You're doing it the right way - low and slow. Congrats.

Someone told me to "punch" the flare. That word worked for me. Push out and up like you mean it. I'm not an instructor so take it for what it is, internet advice.

Subscribed and watching. I'm looking forward to watching you progress. I learned by aerotow and really like the scooter tow thing. I just spent my first summer out gliding around the southwest. Welcome to the addiction, I hope to see you out in the southwest sometime. Blue Sky is on my list. I gotta get a scooter tow rating.

  • @skeetzoid
    @skeetzoid ปีที่แล้ว

Keep at it! We've all been there. Landing actually gets easier once Steve lets you get higher up, because you can pull in for speed and get a proper round out prior to trim and flare. At that low and slow altitude (which is appropriate for now because your current goal is to learn to steer and to control pitch) you're basically flying almost at trim speed and by the time the line stops pulling you're almost immediately at stall speed, and flaring when the glider is already stalled is hard because the nose wants to point down for stall recovery. What you should do is really throw that glider behind you fast and hard with the nose pointed straight to the sky so you can to turn it into a giant air brake. That will stop your forward momentum. When you flare the glider aim to plant that keel into the ground behind you. You got the best school and the best instructor in the East Coast right there in Manquin.

Thanks! Things started to click a lot better the next lesson. Although one of my flares I pushed that so hard I was worried I planted that keel TOO deep in the ground :) But landed 6 out of 8 that day.
