I have visited Akiba for the past 13 years, I've seen it evolving, the first time I came AKB were at their peak, now... who cares anymore ? but the number of maid café, con café and some more dodgy places exploded, even the Yodobashi evolved, now it sells clothes, there's restaurants, the place became a lot more tourist friendly.

The reason is just a switch in the customers majority, not many are interested in tinkering with electronics (also everything is getting more complicated to tinker with). You might see some people who will build their own PC or upgrade their SSD in their steam deck or laptop, but even that is rare in the general public. Playing games, reading manga or watching anime is much more mainstream and is easy to participate in. I am not sure how the anime merch stores are doing there, but even recently their prices were fairly good and the traffic seems to be more than solid, even more so with recent tourism spikes. Their prices will be higher than other stores in not as popular areas

Japan doesn’t allow foreigners to come and set shop. I am an entrepreneur doing few million usd a year. Was very keen to live long term - a few years in Japan and incorp a company and pay taxes there and what not. I wasn’t allowed , the VISA norms are extremely ruthless for some countries

As of 4/6/24, there is a bus going from Haneda terminal 1 to 3 within terminals. It’s in T1 gate 91 and there’s another stop within terminal 1. I am currently on the bus. This will take you to T3 floor 1, then you will get in line to clear international security.
